WTF are Frothers? Have you seen them around and wondered? Not a quiche, but a protest group. Tory, Labour, Lib Dems - Common Goal - Protest Against the Cuts

What are the Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

Come and join us.

Hello Frothers,
As a mother and also a paediatrician, I am very worried about the effects the NHS Bill will have on children's health and health care. This Bill spells the end of the NHS as we know it. It's not that there aren't problems with the NHS for children - but this Bill will make things worse. Worse for children with serious and life-threatening illnesses, worse for children with chronic conditions and disabilities, worse for children with problems that are expensive and difficult to fix.

I wonder - what do you think about the NHS Bill?

garlicfrother · 04/01/2012 19:00

aha! Grin Thanks, MmeLindt. Nowt I can do about that.

I just tried installing Disqus, which is more like the comment system used on newspaper sites (it threads the comments) but it made the pages seem jumpy. Have given up for now. Maybe if when we're getting fifty a day, huh?

Thank you for posting Alicia's story. It resonates with me - I didn't claim at all for two years, as the process itself made me so ill. If CMHS hadn't given me a social worker to sort it out, I'd be a gibbering vegetable by now. Or dead.

Last year's ATOS assessor replied to my statement that I have severe clinical depression with "My friends knew I was depressed when they came round and saw I hadn't done the washing up." Although my thoughts were "You had friends, missus, so you hadn't been depressed for long," "I wish the washing up was the worst of my problems," and "Are we discussing your health or mine?" But I didn't say any of that, I made sympathetic noises ... because I'm mentally ill. She 'failed' me, of course. Sigh.

There was an East Enders storyline in December, where Jean was persuaded to cover up for her sister, who'd been claiming benefits as her (Jean has bipolar, the sister's a shyster). In the story, Jean agreed to ham up a manic episode for the interview. Doing so triggered a real episode. This being fiction, she was all better in a few days and they didn't labour the point that the benefits interview prompted the real illness. But it was there, all the same.

childrensdocmum
We haven't really touched on the NHS except in passing, mainly because we haven't (I don't think) got someone "in the know".

If you would like to write a blog post (anonymously if you prefer) for the blog, we would welcome it.

Tbh, the NHS cuts have registered but I haven't really started looking into this.

Garlic
I tried Disqus on my blog but had issues with it. Some comments were showing up and some were not. I took it off in the end.

Sorry to hear about the assessment. I do think that it is deliberate, the failing of people in the first instance in the hope that only the truly desperate and determined will continue with the application process.

It's the same tactic as the CSA changes. Save money by putting people off claiming and hang the fact that doing so will screw vulnerable people over.

TeWihara · 04/01/2012 19:54

I think an NHS post would be really interesting - like lots of people I have no idea how the NHS works!

TeWihara · 04/01/2012 19:55

yummymummy offered to do one too on the previous page.

TeWihara · 04/01/2012 19:55

maybe yummymummy's explaining how it works and then childrensdoc explaining the cuts impact?

MmeLindor. · 04/01/2012 20:00

oh, sorry. Yummymummy, I missed your post. Yes, two linked posts would be great.

ARGH. I just remembered why LOTM got banned from MN. Am going to ignore her tweets now.

OP posts:
TeWihara · 04/01/2012 20:03

Why did she get banned from MN?

MmeLindor. · 04/01/2012 20:13

Had a nosy and it was benefit bashing. Which is why she is telling me that those who decide to live in London should just move if they cannot afford their lifestyle.

To the question of where London would find teachers and nurses if anyone on a low wage moves to Scotland, she has yet to reply.

OP posts:
TeWihara · 04/01/2012 20:39

ah yes, I remember now Hmm

garlicfrother · 04/01/2012 20:40

Hmm I always pictured LOTM as a Hyacinth Bucket type, but poor! Making herself "better" by sneering at others in her circumstances.

You're right about the ATOS assessments, MmeL and Te. I appealed without any representation - just sent the form in - and the decision was reversed. Action groups say they now have evidence that ATOS works to a targeted failure rate, which has been raised again this year. Trouble is, you don't know any of this until an expert (my social worker) explains it. You assume they get their £250m for doing what they say they do.

MmeLindor. · 04/01/2012 20:47

FUCK.

Trying not to rise. Am considering blocking her now.

OP posts:
TeWihara · 04/01/2012 20:49

Do it.

No point trying to reason with a known troublemaker is there?

MmeLindor. · 04/01/2012 20:53

Have done.

I go on twitter for fun, not to be attacked. Pissed me off royally, and I do not get angry easy.

OP posts:
IslaDoit · 04/01/2012 20:56

hey Smile

Yes please to both yummymummy and childrensdocmum! NHS cutting is a big bone of contention for me. I've frothed quite a bit about the ironically named health and social care bill. There was also a fair bit of work done by 38 degrees on the subject. There are def more noises about that on Twitter the last couple of days too.

I think AF is nhs. Speaking of which, where are hunty, AF, Shirley, Hully, Norfolk, Monkey, the twitter crew (I have my own mental shorthand for the #frothers Grin) and everyone who has confused me utterly with xmas name changes?

btw, who is LOTM on Twitter? She really does live in a manor house btw. Shame she's an ignorant so-and-so.

IslaDoit · 04/01/2012 20:57

Is she after you or the Frothers account MmeL? I'd block her.

garlicfrother · 04/01/2012 21:03

Damn you, Isla, now I have to despise her instead of feeling humorous pity Wink

I can't type your name without writing it as a brand of very hard toilet paper!
I changed my name ... I'm, er, Garlic Grin

MmeLindor. · 04/01/2012 21:05

Yes, was wondering where our fellow frothers are. Am missing Santa/Satan - who is she normally, btw?

OP posts:
IslaDoit · 04/01/2012 21:09

She's normally SwallowedAFly. I was thinking of her when I wrote my list but then DS came at my wine with a broom and I had to take evasive action It's hard this parenting business.

Thankfully he's found a jigsaw to do and he's blowing raspberries at himself. Which is a change from doing it in my face.

What is this brand of loo roll? I though my name sounded sound of Dickensian Mrs Doit but also it is what I say all the time "I'll a do it." Grin

MmeLindor. · 04/01/2012 21:40

That tweet about Liam Byrne is being RTed about the place, good work guys.

I have followed and tweeted some of those who RTed and directed them to the blog.
