I may be getting this wrong but the following items from today?s Observer are a cause for concern if correct.

  1. After the new bill goes through Parliament the Heath Secretary will no longer have a duty to provide medical aid/treatment free at the point of use and no legal responsibility for any problems in the NHS. The responsibility will be that of unelected boards or the private company running a hospital.

  2. Private companies can bid to run (some ?) hospitals and make a profit.

  3. Their will be no cap on the amount of private operations in NHS hospitals which obviously will reduce the number of operations available to everyone else and increase profits.

  4. The targets for time waiting for operations is going to be watered down or even removed (as in Thatcher?s day)
