The whole "Oh the cuts are ideological" argument is just stupid.

If we voted a left wing government in, do we expect right wing policies? Of course not. And vice versa.

I'd be more pissed if the government didn't stick to the ideology they were voted in for. Hence one big reason why the Lib Dems are screwed. LD voters voted for a new party, one which would stand against the Tories/Labour but instead they got a Tory lapdog.

Voters voted for Tories because they realised that tough times require tough action. And Labour's failure to control spending during the boom times is the last thing the country needed during bad.

Incidentally... the 'feckless' is not a description exclusive to the poor. Plenty of people from wealthier backgrounds seem to drop out, sponge off pater or think they're on an extended gap year. :)

there surely must be a mix of ideology and evidence on which to base policy or else it is not direction it is actually simply whim
