Slow hand clap

"begins"

You've not been paying attention to the last 15 years or so, have you?

excellent news

social media networks are channels for dull ego-centrics who love to proclaim their own lives as though anyone has any interest; focuses of cyber-bullying; detrimental to the psychological development of our children

I wish he would shut down facebook, twitter, messenger and all the drivel that accompanies this modern world drive for technology

but he won't - because he can't - so it's empty rhetoric

Itsjustafleshwound · 11/08/2011 17:49

It brings this to mind ...

usualsuspect · 11/08/2011 17:50

what about MN? , that contains a lot of drivel

Tortington · 11/08/2011 17:50

OP posts:
Tortington · 11/08/2011 17:51

OP posts:
gapants · 11/08/2011 17:57

Yes but samcam is part of this drivel, surely no shutting down on MN. I can see the headlines-

Half price nice ham causes chaos in East Dulwich Deli!

Huffing Mums poke each other in the ribs at local deli to get to the nice ham that was on sale.

gapants · 11/08/2011 17:59

The ham sale was circulated on MN, a well known social media site. This is not the first time MN has created havoc. Whast is now referred to as biscuit gate was a real low point in Gordon Browns political career.

PlentyOfPubgardens · 11/08/2011 18:00

It's taken the mainstream media until today to take any notice of what happened to Woolwich on Monday night.

I hate Twitter - it's the most ridiculous rumour factory and I dare say has been used to incite trouble but without it, I'd have been royally fucked these last few days.

EdithWeston · 11/08/2011 18:04

CUSTARDO: Why should I do your googling for you?

This is the announcement of a working group to look at options. Hardly the same league as the measure brought in under the previous administration (which the coalition has been re-examining and repealing - obvious example, ID cards).

Now, back to the ham....

mercibucket · 11/08/2011 18:06

Good to see tories been listening to china on this - after all they have lots of experience on how to hsndle dissent, riots and the like

It was rhetorical, i didn't want you to post anything really Wink

Only in the UK could we have the government alluding to the removal of protections for citizens against the possibility of human rights abuse from the police days after they shot a man in questionable circumstances, and weeks after corruption was found in the Metropolitan's highest command.

Tortington · 11/08/2011 18:50

indeed!

Twitter et al are tools. How you use them is what counts. Tell that to the Libyans, Syrians, Egyptians, Tunisians.... shall I go on?

TimeWasting · 11/08/2011 18:57

Mild lol at activate slagging off social media on an internet forum.

Lifeissweet · 11/08/2011 19:02

We have free speech. We have it for an important reason and, now that we have faster and more widely available forms of communication they will be used for good and for ill in the same way that all methods of communication ever have been.

DC needs to look to himself on this one. Why on Earth would young people be looking for the excitement and potential financial gains of looting at all if it weren't for the fact that they are being systematically hung out to dry by this Government? They don't feel that society (including the police) represents them, so why should they take notice of law and order? They have no ambitions, no prospects and nothing to aspire to, so why not loot and riot? What is there to lose?

So it was organised on messenger apps, but it could have been done just as easily by word of mouth.

meditrina · 11/08/2011 19:03

TimeWasting! Excellent point!

"Recently in the 7/7 inquest the court was told that the O2 mobile phone network was disabled under protocol ACCLOC ? a system allowing police to restrict telephone networks ? after the bombs by a senior police officer at 11.40am".

It's not a new erosion......precedent has been set - we've been sleep-walking into this for years.

This working group won't be nicely examining options and making a balanced judgement. It'll be working out how to translate that precedent into actual effect on further forms of media.

headfairy · 11/08/2011 19:10

great post lifeissweet

TimeWasting · 11/08/2011 19:14

It's a perfect excuse to reduce our freedoms.

May I please recommend Shock Doctrine for analysis of what may well have been going on in Dave's mind on his flight back from Tuscany.

ironman · 11/08/2011 19:23

ttosca. They shot a lawyer dead in Chelsea not one person rioted....strange that.
