Anyway...Morrisons, Asda, Aldi & Sainsburys...but not Tesco...does that mean we can shop at Tesco tomorrow...?

I have done for ages. They screw the farmers over.

I think we should place the blame where it lies and not penalise advertisers. Don't buy the newspaper or subscribe to the TV service if you disagree with News International - spreading the misery more widely would only put companies and the people who work for them at risk.

Tesco's are crap stores. As another poster says they have been screwing the farmers over for years. They are the least moral IMO of all the stores.
I would not boycott the Sun and risk putting people out of work. They are not the moral guardians of others at News International.

Oh this is so naive - if you wish to boycott Tesco, then include Morrison, Sainsburys and Asda too. Just listen to Farming Today radio 4, 5.45am every morning to get fully up to speed on this issue.

Waitrose are probably the most ethical and 'fair' of the retailers in the mass supermarket sector, but apart from that....

If you want to be as ethical as you can, grow your own or go to farmers' markets. Not much else to be done, I guess?

This is weak. Look, I'm all for a good boycott, but you have to backmit up with a solid reason and facts and figures.

At some point pretty much all of the supermarkets will have done something that makes them worthy of a boycott, so there is really not much point just targeting tesco.

I don't like Tesco. I don't like the way they are trying to take over the world. You know that statistic that you are never more than six feet away from a rat? - it feels like that with Tesco. They are determined to take over every town, every high street, every corner shop and kill off small independent retailers.

The only supermarkets within walking distance for me (no car) are tesco, morrisons and waitrose. I simply cannot afford to shop at waitrose all the time even though I would like to.

Personally i like waitrose, you get a better class of shopper there.

Are they? You could argue that it's the customers who, given the choice, have voted with their feet and killed off the small independant retailers.

As Alan Coren said - Sainsbury are good. They help to keep the riffraff out of Waitrose!

Sadly, Waitrose are the worst perpetrators IMO. They pretend to be lovely and fluffy, and then they charge the suppliers £45 +VAT for any complaint that a consumer makes. Please think twice before complaining...even a small mention that you didn't like the taste...which is opinion after all, the supermarkets make a fortune from this revenue line.
They also charge for short deliveries...even though you only have a day to respond to their orders, and then if you have stock waiting for them to order, they may not, which is waste and costs suppliers huge amounts of money.
Supermarkets NEED to be regulated and not by BRC who is their's anyway. They are bullies, and act like mafia. Even the customer service employees have no idea that the supplier is charged at often 100 times the product value.
If a supermarket puts in a new computerised system to make it easlier for them, the supplier is charged to use it. The list goes on. I have tried to get the media interested, and they are, but their lawyers won't let them touch it unless companies come out and admit it! Who's going to do that! Risk your business? We would all dearly love to just supply ethically-minded, friendly shops and farm shops, but sadly, most people go to the supermarkets.
If all the suppliers stopped supplying for just 1 day, the supermarkets would realise that their business is reliant on others.
Sorry, bit of a rant! But they really are shocking, and no other industry would be able to get away with it.

Co-op are on a par with Waitrose for unfairness. They charge £45 +VAT for any complaint. Actually, they may be worse.
The worst thing about the supermarkets is that there is no feeling of working together. In Europe the buyers treat you and want you and your product to do well, it's a partnership, over here you are dog poo.

Ah Justcross... you need to be listening to the program I name-checked on Radio 4. They have representatives from the NFU and the BRC on all the time, and it's a total bun fight! Personally I'm afraid I simply can't afford to support some of the local producers who come to sell at the local market on a Thursday (when I'm on hols, I always go look at their stuff). It is SO expensive compared to the supermarkets, and although I'm well over £45K, I'm the sole breadwinner, feeding a family of five, one of whom is still in nursery three days a week. I'm afraid it's supermarkets, BOGOFs and whatever I can get my hands on.
But I agree - it's not fair, and moreover, some portray themselves as more ethical... but they are both co operative movements so have no vested interest in playing 'nice', let's be honest!!

While in Isreal she transferred all her money to trust funds and then years later came back to Britain pleading poverty and had her fine reduced

I have never spent a penny in Tesco ever since.

Any "woman" who deliberately puts children in asbestos ridden homes to gerrymander votes and is found guilty of this offence in court will never get a penny from me

I don't shop in Tesco because I will make sure Shirley Porter does not make one penny from me or my family (none of my family - about 100 people - have shopped in Tesco for years because of this)

Lest we forget the children put into asbestos ridden homes by the Tesco heiress.

Very interesting, BeingAMum, and enough to put me off Tesco's for sure.

However, Waitrose and the Co-op (or Scotmid in Scotland) at least share their profits with their workers, and I think I read that Waitrose makes sure the people at the top don't earn more than 15X what the employees at the bottom make.

I fairly recently wrote to Scotmid to praise them for their excellent customer service. Really helpful assistants who pointed out special offers and a manager who even carried my shopping to the car for me!
