Pro-Cuts Rally

I wonder if this rally will be given more air time than the 'Hardest Hit' one on Wed. AIBU to think this is going to be seriously inflammatory?

OP posts:

I have noticed that about the feminism topic, I lurk there often. There is a rigorous standard of debate.

The thing is though, I tend to assume that people are decent until they prove otherwise, whatever their political persuasion.

"Those who genuinely understand that other people can have a different politcal opinion to them without hating them are those you can have a good discussion with."

Yes - and I've noticed some regular posters trying hard to find common ground with others, despite their very different political views. Which has got to be a good thing.

To be sure - there are those who are interested in understanding others opinions, and those who are on here to broadcast their own opinions & find others who share those opinions. .

I'm not sure what to make of a person who lurks on the politics forum in order to compile a list of posters to avoid elsewhere Hmm.

LoopyLoopsBettyBoops · 15/05/2011 13:19

I'm certainly not lurking with that intent, it just happens as a by-product of certain threads on this kind of issue. In fairness, there haven't been the extreme views that might be expected on a topic of this kind.

DillyDaydreaming · 15/05/2011 13:41

Personally I feel revulsion for anyone glorifying and celebrating cuts which will affect those who are vulnerable. That just is not nice - I'd think more of these people if they said "cuts are happening how can I help those who might suffer". Even if it's something small like just knocking to say hello and ensuring someone is not isolated.

The "Free schools" issue is not worth fighting about, they may do better with the same limited resources. I would welcome more choice in areas where the schools on offer are crap. As my son has ASD he might do better in a free school set up for children with learning difficulties than in a mainstream school.

I hope this pro- cuts rally is a piss take though. And I don't buy the "David Cameron doesn't make cuts, councils do" shit either. DC promised to protect the vulnerable, by not ring fencing money for care he has condemned some people to anxiety and worry about where their care will come from.. I have no faith in this Government

newwave · 15/05/2011 23:16

Someone will now point out that it is ok to hate conservatives because they are all utter shits......

Perceptive post :o

edam · 15/05/2011 23:23

Dilly's right, there's something very inhumane about people who are willing to glory in other peoples' misery. Even if you are of the firm opinion that cuts have to be made, you don't have to be glad about the suffering that will ensue as services for vulnerable people are cut. (Especially as inevitably it will end up costing more money anyway, when people who are no longer supported in the community end up being admitted to hospital or residential care.)

moondog · 15/05/2011 23:37

It's a kneejerk response to self righteous Polly Toynbee-esque bleating about 'the vulnerable and needy'. Those who ibdulge in this get off more on their perception of themselves as 'caring' than they do about actually doing anything useful. Utterly onanistic.

newwave · 15/05/2011 23:42

moondog, should we all be like you and not give a shit.

Some people are decent and caring and some are not, I suspect I know which you are.

jackstarb · 15/05/2011 23:46

Yes Moondog as our OP put it.

"I wonder if this rally will be given more air time than the 'Hardest Hit' one on Wed".

And it appears it was. It's easier (and more fun) to heckle the 'rich', than it is to actually do something constructive to help the poor.

moondog · 15/05/2011 23:49

There ya go.
Case in point.

newwave · 15/05/2011 23:51

Jack, how about it is good to heckle the rich AND do something to help the poor.

FYI I am not against the rich per se just the:

Tax evading/avoiding ones.
Directors who freeze workers pay but not their own.
Greedy gits who want bonuses on top of high pay.
Those that pay low wages and exploit others.

Or to put it more simply "Tories"

One of the big isdues with free schools is the fact that they are being run parallel to otehr cuts: so whilst I would adore (and a onlt dissertation left presumably am qualified) setting up an ASD school, the fact that we have been refused social service respite yet again due to budget cuts (and that's with ds4 facing diagnosis now so 3 on the spectrum!) makes it impossible; there's only so much that can be asked of anyone and FT care is not going to work alongside seting up such an establishment.

however, as that would eman moving back to Somerset, a county of extreme vuts in the social care field, we'd be better off sticking with Wales anyway: despite the bleeding stump theory above I find it FAr better here than England and know our AM is committed to the ASD cause.

I don't have issues with tories as a group; just policies. Some of the savings in my field clearly will lead to longer term expenditure- eg pull TA SN support and youb get a higher likelihood of chidlren who cannot work post education, knoch respite and finance then you get chances of family breakdown with all that entails and, crucially, costs.
Short termism is ridiculous for the country no matter what party proposes it.
It's all real people's lives being messed up. Had ds1 not got his SNU place we'd have been forced to look at residential schooling; lucky us that we got the place but what about the 30+ who did not? We have ds2 with a school IEP and teachers acting as if and referring to him as dyspraxic but nobody willing to take a referral; ds3 deverely asd but without a clear path for comp as he has a good IQ but poor other skills; no pre-school place for ds4 except at the school that failed the other children spectacularly.....

and that's labour led Wales; back home it would be far worse.

Peachy · 16/05/2011 09:30

Moondog that's simply a generalisation. yes i;ve encountred those people; of course i have. they wear an annoying sympathetic look but would they watch the boys if I were rushed to hospital? Nope (am very aware of this after I cut my head last week when DH was in an exam and had nobody to collect boys from school so had to sit home hoping bleeding didn;t get worse or concussion set in with sole care of ds4).

But that's not everybody; I certainly stand am and get counted, helping out at a SN base (not DS3's) and trying to support people where I can, and there are a great many of us who try our hardest to be decent citizens.

SWC ah you never know; would love to do that one day, really would. We're looking at a move to Devon if possible in a few years, would be then.
