Independence for Scotland?

First Minister Salmond thinks more people are in favour than pre 1997.

I can't make my mind up. I hate Nationalism of any sort, but independence might well be the best thing for Scotland, if you want a more peaceful, humane government - because let's face it, the Tory-Lib Coalition is no fun for anyone. On the other hand, I'd hate to break up the UK.

What do you think?

Niceguy, that economist (forget his name) once did a calculation on television to see whether Scotland would be better or worse off on its own, and the results were that it would make no difference. Ewan someone? Nice man, very enthusiastic ... sorry to be so vague.

All I can say is that I don't care who signed us up for the union but I know I don't want to be a part of it. I'm half English so racism is not a motive at all.

There are lots of factors that need sorted out first though. Not least being England's expansion of ownership over the norh sea making our oil theirs.

Scottish independence would be a good thing, not least because it would prevent Labour ever govering England again Smile

Ask Canadians what they think of Americans, Portguese what they think of Spain, Danes what they think of Germany - you'd get much the same response as if you asked any of the other UK nations what they think of England. It is a typical response to a large, and dare I say imperialistic neighbour.
However, my point about civic nationalism was in response to the idea that all nationalism is somehow wrong. The idea of a nationalism which is expansionist, or viewing one's own culture as being better than others (ethnic nationalism) is wrong and dangerous. Scottish nationalism, as espoused by mainstream nationalist politicians, is about wanting Scotland to take its place in the world as a small country, making decisions for itself - the normal situation for most nations.

I hope you get independance, Scotland has been a drain on us for far too long

Hudd if that is true, how come labour and Tory politicians are so unwilling to let it happen? You'd think it would bring huge political advantage for the Tories as they have little support in Scotland.
