When new leaders of one of the two big political parties take over, there is normally a big honeymoon phase. There are lots of fluffy lifestyle interviews in the press, lots of scrutiny of their character and policies.

Why has this not happened with Ed Miliband?

Even the left-wing media like the Guardian and BBC seem to be largely ignoring him.

He seems pretty ineffectual. New leaders should seize the initiative - he seems to be merely following the coalition, blindly opposing everything they do.

Strangely - his big brother David wrote an article in the Daily Mail for his first step back into public view.

Because the Beeb has an official arrangement with David Cameron about how things are covered politically. I suspect this arrangement was agreed to squeeze Rupert Murdoch out slightly, and guarantee a certain level of funding for the bbc, which i suppose is a good thing, relatively speaking.

I think it's because they know he is interim.

I think also he is just waiting for the coalition to continue to hang themselves. He will seize his moment when he needs to.

He doesn't need to actually say anything at the moment - the coalition's credibility speaks for itself.
