cuts - Wednesday's Spending Review

Brace yourself ladies - these cuts are big, there will be tens of thousands of public sector redundancies and it's said (by the Fawcett Society amongst others) that they will disproportionately affect women.

Some workers will get some sort of payoff, and some will be pleased to go. Some will find new jobs.

But I reckon the overall effect (licks finger and holds it in the wind) will be to drive down women's wages, meaning that once you are made redundant from your public sector post you may find more work but it will be at a lower rate and the extra competition for jobs across the board will drive wages down across the board. This may be true for men as well but I think it will affect women - mums - more.

If you are watching the press coverage on Weds, what do you think the effects of the cuts and the job losses for women (and mums) will be?

Smile Lady, I am very nice! Even if I have a disabled child that I expect the government to look after!

It really is a coincidence though as have the same name on another forum about education - can see how it weirds you though - it did me!

roundthebend4 · 20/10/2010 21:07

erm

They spunked it. On Quangos and tax credits. Ffs what a stupid idea...introduce a minimum wage so companies get away with paying bugger

ther ebrought the minimum wage in becuase companies were paying a very low wage and making huge proffits while their staff were working for £2 and £ 3 a hr

hubblybubblytoilntrouble · 20/10/2010 21:08

Gideon, pink is a total shithouse and not worth getting upset over, please, don't let her get to you.

Most decent people are totally outraged by the comments made, you're amongst friends here, she isn't.

roundthebend4 · 20/10/2010 21:09

nd how do I know thats becuase i can remmber working at a job where i got £2.50 hour while owners were swanning round in posh cars and having expensive holidays least Labour tried to level the playing field a bit to somewhere near a wage to live on

roundthebend4 · 20/10/2010 21:11

dont give up if anything mn has taught me ye sthere are some that dont care but for everyone like that there are 10 more that do care and do understand

alicatte · 20/10/2010 21:12

I've just read through some of this thread and it really is getting unnecessarily (and uncharacteristically for mumsnet) horrid.

I guess it has been a horrible day though.

One of my contacts has just told me that they have slashed undergraduate teaching budgets by 70% - is that true, sounds incredible.

HalloweeseG · 20/10/2010 21:16

Roundthebend

They always try! They always get it wrong. They always leave the country in a worse fiscal mess than they inherit. They use social control. It doesn't work.

History repeats itself.

ImGideonsMumAndIHateHimToo · 20/10/2010 21:17

I think Pink is someone I have encountered on MN; as usual though she wil come on and say she ahs no clue who I am; I have told Mn though, as it has been discussed before

I need an MN break.

roundthebend4 · 20/10/2010 21:19

well and you dont want to use social control to keep us in our place heaven forbid the minmum wage goes up and they have to start paying a living wage while they cry in to their handmade silk sheets

alicatte · 20/10/2010 21:19

Gideons mum - don't let it get to you.

think recognise your style of typing we both have same style dont becuase like said for everyone that doe snot care others do.

I refuse to hide away and stay in the sn section think all the arguing with proffesionals has made my skin thicker than a rhinos .

HalloweeseG · 20/10/2010 21:23

round the bend. It's the very minimum wage coupled with government "credits" that enables the head honchos at the companies to pay themselves the profits.

The Government are subsidizing their profits!

roundthebend4 · 20/10/2010 21:25

yes but do you really think take away working tax credit take away the minimum wage that head honchos going to step up and pay more when infact they can get away with paying less

all that happens is the workers earn less and the hinchos make mor emoney , now as a simple benefit carer scrounger I can see that

roundthebend4 · 20/10/2010 21:27

why do you think companys outsource to india becuase they dont have to pay the minimum wage so can maxmise their proffits

legostuckinmyhoover · 20/10/2010 21:27

halloweeseG, do you really think that if tax credits were not in existence that employers would actually raise salaries?

HalloweeseG · 20/10/2010 21:29

Yes! They will have to. At the moment a deep layer of employees are being paid mw because the companies know that they need 16 or whatever hours plus mw for the govt to top them up.

Take that away, people will move to where the pay is higher, employers will have to pay market rates.

Minimum wage and tax credits are an artificial construct to keep the "working poor" poor and dependant.

Frrrrightattendant · 20/10/2010 21:29

'Don't bite the hand that feeds you'

rarely have I felt so angry at a statement on here

People who earn more do not necessarily work harder, they are just luckier that they have found a job which pays a lot, or they have the 'right' skills for the jobs tht pay the most.

Not everyone has these breaks, and those who do take the lion's share of the money available to workers in general

therefore they are not 'feeding the poor' with their taxes. They are merely giving a little bit back which they have no more right to than the poor, yet take in wages because their job is deemed more important.

Yes there are those who choose to be idle, but it isn't the majority of benefit claimants.

Or do you really believe some people are just born more deserving of a high salary than others? How does an executive director of a company work harder than some poor bastard who cleans the streets all day? How does he deserve to earn a higher salary? Answer is he doesn't.

But apparently he's being utterly gracious by payingt axes towards the street cleaner's benefits that enable his children to be clothed. Because rightfully, a greater share is his? Really?

why?

roundthebend4 · 20/10/2010 21:29

maybe the minum wage needs to go become a living wage , then less support needed in way of tax credits and companys should stop being allowed to outsource work to india and other devloping companys .You ever tired callin g Bt is is via india as they can pay about half the wage that would have to in the uk

Yet there making big proffits and taking tax breaks and kickbacks of the goverment

legostuckinmyhoover · 20/10/2010 21:31

no, it is because that is what they can get away with.

roundthebend4 · 20/10/2010 21:31

HalloweeseG

if companys are not forced into paying a minimum wage theres not going to be that many higher paid jobs hey why pay someone £8 a hr w eonly have to pay them £3 a hour morals and scruples do not go along with big business. And theres only a limited amount of jobs

roundthebend4 · 20/10/2010 21:32

minimu wage stops big business and small ones from paying people a slave wage

HalloweeseG · 20/10/2010 21:32

It's not what you're born with fright it's what you do with it.
