cuts - Wednesday's Spending Review

Brace yourself ladies - these cuts are big, there will be tens of thousands of public sector redundancies and it's said (by the Fawcett Society amongst others) that they will disproportionately affect women.

Some workers will get some sort of payoff, and some will be pleased to go. Some will find new jobs.

But I reckon the overall effect (licks finger and holds it in the wind) will be to drive down women's wages, meaning that once you are made redundant from your public sector post you may find more work but it will be at a lower rate and the extra competition for jobs across the board will drive wages down across the board. This may be true for men as well but I think it will affect women - mums - more.

If you are watching the press coverage on Weds, what do you think the effects of the cuts and the job losses for women (and mums) will be?

She sounds very nice but she is freaking me out.

'There. Is. No. Money. '

You can't share what's not there.

Really? Then why are they still sending away billions in foreign aid?

I don't disagree with that, btw, but well, you said there was no money.

roundthebend4 · 20/10/2010 20:49

because few posters seem to suggest that thos ethat can pay should pay so remeber that next time you call 999 maybe needs be a slding scale oh im sorry madam you earn to much so unless you wish to pay up front we cant come out to you

Doobydoo · 20/10/2010 20:51

Excellent HalloweeseGGrin Yes,Phiip Green springs to mind [with off shore tax blah blah][
Hospitals spend inordinate amounts of money keeping/maintaining babies lives and then as they get older the help is not there.I speak from a professional and persoanl viewpoint. Thus, they need to maintain the support they initiated yes or no???????????

Doobydoo · 20/10/2010 20:52

Don't bite the hand that feeds...fab[not]

hubblybubblytoilntrouble · 20/10/2010 20:53

Well there's money enough for Trident, as SGM says, money to introduce 'free schools' and enough money to privatise the NHS in all but name.

But all that aside, these cuts are not the only option, but I'm sick of saying raise taxes, so I won't.

I'm not sure I buy that the fat cats contribute the most and take the least. For a start, how many of them rely on tax credits/housing benefit to subsidise the poverty wages they pay their workers?

HalloweeseG · 20/10/2010 20:53

The printing presses are being warmed up, it will cost us dear. Quantative easing is a one way street to a worthless currency.

yes and someone talked about dropping the minmum wage hey so thse big guys can get away with paying less and putting more money in their pockets

mamatomany · 20/10/2010 20:56

The plan was always inflation, (polishes "told you so" neon sign).

HalloweeseG · 20/10/2010 20:58

That won't work SGM because the wealthy areas will rake in a fortune while the poor areas will claw in a pittance.

The wealthy areas will then be able to lower their taxation levels while the poor areas will have to increase theirs.

Wealthier people from poorer areas will move to the already wealthy areas with low taxation.

Two very separate ghettoes are formed.

roundthebend4 · 20/10/2010 20:58

hubblybubbly

your right if minimum wage was to go so people did not need to claim top up benfits then the fat cats soon be shouting about their proffits going down oh deary they might not be able to but a £300 botle of wine every night sorry dear were cutting back lifes tough has be the cheap wine tonight £289 instead

Thanks Catherine.

So If you were average income you'd be about 50 then.

It makes it a bit clearer. A bit like centiles in baby clinics then.

HalloweeseG · 20/10/2010 21:00

Doobydoo, the vat on what Philip Green spends in a month in London is more than the majority of us pay in tax in a year.

roundthebend4 · 20/10/2010 21:00

HalloweeseG

and you dont think the current cuts are not going to cause ghettoes lets face it its going to happen wher epeople that lived in one area most their lives have family there are not going to be able to afford to stay there anymore move to where rent life is cheaper

HalloweeseG · 20/10/2010 21:01

SGM, so more tax?

roundthebend4 · 20/10/2010 21:01

well if Philip Green paid his workers a decent wage ther e be able to spend more to instead of him getting richer mor ethan he can ever spend

SupportsmallBusiness · 20/10/2010 21:02

Unfortunately all our right wing media has been promoting the lie that this is Labour's fault when those of us who don't follow blindly know that there was a world recession and Labour had to borrow to stop us going into a depression and then had to bail out the greedy bankers on top of that. Think for yourself people and stop believing the lies of the Con-Dems. This Coalition are deficit deceivers and as someone said in another thread Poverty Creators.

hubblybubblytoilntrouble · 20/10/2010 21:02

Awww, poor old Phil. I'll swap him [hgrin]

LaydeeBlahBlah · 20/10/2010 21:03

Grin no Lady, I haven't stolen it, it is sheer coincidence - I found it quite amusing this morning but did post earlier that there seemed to be two blah blahs here!

Happy to name change if you wish but right now can't be bothered as too tired and angry about some of the other comments on here.

HalloweeseG · 20/10/2010 21:03

You live where you can afford Roundthebend. I can't afford to live in Hampstead so I live in Essex. Not much difference Hmm

Doobydoo · 20/10/2010 21:03

hALLOWEESEG Oh ,that's ok thenHmm

I think so many people haven;t got a clue!

I don;t ahve one disabled child which is ahrd enough, I have two. DS1 at ten sleeps like a newborn and I haven;lt ahd over 2 or 3 hours in a row in years, the pain of knowing you annot help is a physical pain,.

Knowing that actually it's my genetoics that caused this; that the state wpuld be better off if I ahd died at birth; that I am seen as a valid target when ultimately I am petrified. Charity help us? Which one? there's no surestart, homestart or anything here. our ssd report says 'An excellent m other who will always cope' so we get refused for anything.

But I don;t cope; I cry, I go under, I wipe my face and get on with teh school run.

And then I come on here where I used to like but I think just to confirm my horrid images of myself now; hopwever abd I feel about myself someone here can top it and amke me feel worse, and I am a competitive soul, have no other choice- what else cn I do? Can't go under (kids) acn't chnage much (kids) can;t curl up and die (and I would really like to at times) Kids.....

today I looked around a SEN unit for a child that we thought would always manage MS. We were told that he would be suited; I thought they would laugh at us and turn us away. I wish they had.

Pink- skihorse, right?

I give up, MN isn;t supportive is it? It just hates anyone.

HalloweeseG · 20/10/2010 21:05

Labour had no need to borrow they had three terms of the greatest tax revenue income ever!

They spunked it. On Quangos and tax credits. Ffs what a stupid idea...introduce a minimum wage so companies get away with paying bugger all then top it up from the governments purse!

Utter lunacy.
