cuts - Wednesday's Spending Review

Brace yourself ladies - these cuts are big, there will be tens of thousands of public sector redundancies and it's said (by the Fawcett Society amongst others) that they will disproportionately affect women.

Some workers will get some sort of payoff, and some will be pleased to go. Some will find new jobs.

But I reckon the overall effect (licks finger and holds it in the wind) will be to drive down women's wages, meaning that once you are made redundant from your public sector post you may find more work but it will be at a lower rate and the extra competition for jobs across the board will drive wages down across the board. This may be true for men as well but I think it will affect women - mums - more.

If you are watching the press coverage on Weds, what do you think the effects of the cuts and the job losses for women (and mums) will be?

woohoo - a piece of good news - TV licence frozen for 6yrs - 'bout bloody time there was something nice.......

LadyBlaBlah · 20/10/2010 13:24

Well done Murdoch, you have started to chip away on the BBC with the backing of the government

That support was worth it at the GE

Bensmum76 · 20/10/2010 13:24

Adora it must be such a huge worry for you.

Simbacat · 20/10/2010 13:24

When in the USA museum admission is often free for local residents but costed for tourists. That seems fair to me.

glittery · 20/10/2010 13:25

CTC up £30 next year and £50 the following year

LadyBlaBlah · 20/10/2010 13:25

The provision of "superfast" broadband to rural areas is a MASSIVE massive cost

Why no figures?

AdoraBelleDearhart · 20/10/2010 13:25

simbacat Smile you are so right about laughing.

whyamibothering · 20/10/2010 13:25

So if one partner works 16 hours and the other doesnt work due to young family / elderly relatives but doesnt get carers allowance because it would be swallowed up by losses in WTC - they won't qualify for tax credits now. So one partner has to work an extra 8 hours for the same benefit - where is the incentive to even work at all because those unemployed arent having to do any more for their money????

And then the council housing market rents????

How are we all in this together ????

Simbacat · 20/10/2010 13:25

We will have sold our tvs to pay the bill.

Frrrrightattendant · 20/10/2010 13:25

What'sthe 80% about, Adora? Are they doing something to HB or CTB?

Simbacat · 20/10/2010 13:26

What was he doing in north Yorkshire?

DuelingFanjo · 20/10/2010 13:26

"Well done Murdoch, you have started to chip away on the BBC with the backing of the government" :(

MaMoTTaT · 20/10/2010 13:26

Simbacat - what do they class as a "tourist"?

We have one (tiny) musuem here......we have to be "tourists" to go to any half decent musuems.

pah @ £30 extra CTC - when they're taking away 10% of childcare help.

pompadourprincess · 20/10/2010 13:26

Is that £30 for the year that isn't going to cover the loss for most people when childcare help is being reduced from 80 to 70 percent. Have I got that right???

bytheMoonlight · 20/10/2010 13:26

It's going to be better to be unemployed than on a low income.

pompadourprincess · 20/10/2010 13:26

x posts Mamo

molemesses · 20/10/2010 13:27

Nothing new there then BTM.

AdoraBelleDearhart · 20/10/2010 13:27

frrright 80 % of market value.

bytheMoonlight · 20/10/2010 13:27

£30 above indexation I think - although I don't actually know what that means Blush

caramelwaffle · 20/10/2010 13:27

CrossRail - ouch. Expensive.

(benefits me personally however)

LadyBlaBlah · 20/10/2010 13:28

Simba - "superfast broadband" to N Yorks

It won't happen

When they get round to looking at the figures. It costs millions to get it to single villages and they will back out

Glitterknickaz · 20/10/2010 13:28

a good thing though if they're putting so many out of work Hmm

alicatte · 20/10/2010 13:28

It must be printed somewhere

apparently it will appear linked from here after he's finished speaking.

www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/

pompadourprincess · 20/10/2010 13:28

I agree moonlight family on say 20k is fucked compared to people that choose not work who already have a council tenancy

whyamibothering · 20/10/2010 13:28

Yes bythemoonlight

So the children of those on a low income are really going to suffer, arent they
