cuts - Wednesday's Spending Review

Brace yourself ladies - these cuts are big, there will be tens of thousands of public sector redundancies and it's said (by the Fawcett Society amongst others) that they will disproportionately affect women.

Some workers will get some sort of payoff, and some will be pleased to go. Some will find new jobs.

But I reckon the overall effect (licks finger and holds it in the wind) will be to drive down women's wages, meaning that once you are made redundant from your public sector post you may find more work but it will be at a lower rate and the extra competition for jobs across the board will drive wages down across the board. This may be true for men as well but I think it will affect women - mums - more.

If you are watching the press coverage on Weds, what do you think the effects of the cuts and the job losses for women (and mums) will be?

I think you have to have a us driving licence or other proof of residency- if you don't you pay- seemed fair to me.

It's going to be better to be unemployed than on a low income."

Yes.

Bingo!

Well I was hoping that the Tories may achieve one thing during this parliment - stop the sense of entitlement that runs through some sections of scoeity.

Guess they are not even going to be able to acheive that Sad

MaMoTTaT · 20/10/2010 13:29

I don't get the couples WTC thing either - if someone has been made redundant you're basically reducing the number of jobs that they can afford to take to be able to live. Now there's no point in applying for a job under 24hrs as you won't get the WTC to make you better off in work.

alicatte · 20/10/2010 13:29

Now does this make up for the previous cuts to the school budget?

carriedababi · 20/10/2010 13:29

dc and nc look really embarrsed

zoelikesjam · 20/10/2010 13:29

but didnt he say they would put a cap on people on benefits so they weren't receiving more than those working?

This really worries me. Pupil premium = not have to worry about the huge inequalities in education attainment at the moment.

foxinsocks · 20/10/2010 13:30

most anti woman spending review ever

pension age increasing enormously, you have to work longer hours to get the working tax benefits (if I heard that right), child benefit axed but other universal benefits for pensioners remain because 'they have worked hard for them'

harder than working families are working now, then?

I'd like that to be told to the pensioners lounging on the Costa del Sol!

mrshess · 20/10/2010 13:30

zoelikes jam yes he did mention a new cap but no figure was mentioned

MaMoTTaT · 20/10/2010 13:31

yes there's a cap on benefits so that those on benefits will get less than the working poor.......

Nice - so you'll have - working - shit life
those on benefits (regardless of reason) - shitter life.

So basically leave the poor in the gutter.........

alicatte · 20/10/2010 13:31

Am I incorrect but - wasn't surestart the programme that 'had not made a significant difference to attainment levels'.

whyamibothering · 20/10/2010 13:31

He talks too fast

What was the EMA allowance going to be replaced with????

shinybootsofleather · 20/10/2010 13:32

Can someone explain the WTC 24 hour thing please? Does each person in a couple need to be working that many hours each or is it between them. I work 22.5 hours and DH works 30 at the moment.

MaMoTTaT · 20/10/2010 13:32

that should be working poor

LadyBlaBlah · 20/10/2010 13:32

You know he always says "the biggest deficit outside of war time"

Aren't we at war?

Small query

uyter · 20/10/2010 13:32

He means the 2 world wars

caramelwaffle · 20/10/2010 13:33

whyamibothering - bank of mum and dad

AdoraBelleDearhart · 20/10/2010 13:33

I would like DC and GO to live on our income for a month then tell me this will not increase Child Poverty.

LadyBlaBlah · 20/10/2010 13:33

David Cameron should not be laughing. Again

wonderstuff · 20/10/2010 13:33

Why do they behave like such monkeys?

Simbacat · 20/10/2010 13:33

Many disadvantaged 2 year olds already get free education. This was a labour pilot which has been running for 3 years. Are they saying that in fact it was a labour success which is being extended?

MaMoTTaT · 20/10/2010 13:33

oh yes surestart - what did he say about that/that department??

I missed that - that's my hope of a job/career in the future (the degree I started last year is geared towards it!)
