cuts - Wednesday's Spending Review

Brace yourself ladies - these cuts are big, there will be tens of thousands of public sector redundancies and it's said (by the Fawcett Society amongst others) that they will disproportionately affect women.

Some workers will get some sort of payoff, and some will be pleased to go. Some will find new jobs.

But I reckon the overall effect (licks finger and holds it in the wind) will be to drive down women's wages, meaning that once you are made redundant from your public sector post you may find more work but it will be at a lower rate and the extra competition for jobs across the board will drive wages down across the board. This may be true for men as well but I think it will affect women - mums - more.

If you are watching the press coverage on Weds, what do you think the effects of the cuts and the job losses for women (and mums) will be?

What are they doing to CTC? That's a third of our total income...

molemesses · 20/10/2010 13:19

alicatte · 20/10/2010 13:19

Well done on the Science Budget.

molemesses · 20/10/2010 13:19

dont know when or by how much though

TheJollyPirate · 20/10/2010 13:19

Worried by the fall in the police budget.

carriedababi · 20/10/2010 13:19

oh this is so depressingSad

bytheMoonlight · 20/10/2010 13:20

So those that choose not to work will and live in social housing keep their low rent and see an increase in their CTC?

MaMoTTaT · 20/10/2010 13:20

mrshess - yes I guess if you're still not well enough to work you'd have to reapply perhaps? or go onto JSA - god knows - he probably hasn't thought it through for those that are on it genuinely Hmm.

I missed what he said about CTC.

LadyBlaBlah · 20/10/2010 13:20

he needs to phone NHS Direct about that cough

Oh. Sorry, that's right. He can't.

AdoraBelleDearhart · 20/10/2010 13:20

This is going to mean a choice between eating and heating for us.Sad

Simbacat · 20/10/2010 13:20

There have to be businesses to take apprentices. My friends son wants to be an electrician- he got a college place but couldn't get the work placed apprenticeship- neither could 70 per cent of his course. She was well off enough that he is working for free for a company just to get the practical experience needed- many of his course have had to drop out. The building sector Is still in crisis here.

Glitterknickaz · 20/10/2010 13:20

I just neeed to know about IS, CA, DLA and CTC

molemesses · 20/10/2010 13:21

Thats what it looks like BTM.

Those who work will be royally screwed while the work dodgers will get away with it again.

alicatte · 20/10/2010 13:21

Did he say anything about Tuition Fees?

Bensmum76 · 20/10/2010 13:21

Why Adora? What a worry

carriedababi · 20/10/2010 13:22

i think he needs a drink

cough cough
perhaos his choking on his words

bedhed · 20/10/2010 13:22

LadyBlahBlah - I doubt he uses NHS anything! will probably be off to Harley Street after his speech...

LadyBlaBlah · 20/10/2010 13:22

Bottled it on the free museums. Good.

Glitterknickaz · 20/10/2010 13:22

This is so confusing.... were any of the disability/carer benefits mentioned?

molemesses · 20/10/2010 13:22

He's going so fast I've missed most of it.

Simbacat · 20/10/2010 13:23

Adora- you can go and live in a museum- they are always warm!!!

You have to laugh or you cry

bigchris · 20/10/2010 13:23

Problem with apprentices is in my sector there making people redundant and replacing them with poorly paid 18 year olds Sad

AdoraBelleDearhart · 20/10/2010 13:23

we are moving from privet rent to housing ass. the 80% is just to much for us.

glittery · 20/10/2010 13:24

glitternickaz all benefits to be combined into a single universal credit over the next 2 parliaments (10 years?) most benefit changes do not affect anyone with a DLA claimant in the house

caramelwaffle · 20/10/2010 13:24

Free entry to museums and Galleries - woo and a hooooo. I take full advantage of this, however, I would rather be charged a small fee and susidise (through my taxes) the rest.
