I always thought that the reason why Mandelson made so many political come-backs and accumulated so many titles was that he had a small compost heap of dirt on everyone. Hope there are some juicy worm-filled nuggets in the book.... LOL

Have you seen the creepy TV ads he has filmed?

They send shivers down my spine.

I think his TV ads are OK, his agent has probably told him to ham up the Prince of Darkness theme in order to drive sales. It's all theatre and he is a modern day Bela Lugosi

Chil - don't get your hopes up. I bet it'll mostly be about him and his oversized ego .

These memoirs are actually really boring.

We have learnt that Alastair Darling planned to put up VAT - that is the only real revelation. All the Labour protests about VAT are now meaningless.

All the rest appears to be saying that Brown was unfit to be PM, and Blair/Brown hated each other - in a thousand different ways.

Toby Young thinks it's all about a Brown / Blair class war?? Was class the real dividing line between Blair and Brown?

claig · 14/07/2010 19:32

there wasn't a lot of difference in their class. The Daily Mail highlighted this a few years back, probably at the same time that the Labour party was spinning Brown as growing up shoeless in a two up two down

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-465259/Gordon-Browns-Tory-family-revealed.html

The other fallacy in Toby's article is to assume that only the lower classes are capable of low-down skullduggery when angling for power. Many of the upper classes are also capable of what Brown is claimed to have done and more.

jackstarbright · 14/07/2010 19:50

Claig - but isn't it the smallest differences in class which grate the most? TB went to public school, whilst GB had an elite state education - both in Scotland.

But, I'm sure there was much more to it. And I agree, class doesn't define your capability for low down skullduggery.

jackstarbright · 14/07/2010 19:59

And talking about low-down skullduggery - Nick Cohen reminisces on Brown's efforts and claims it's still going on.

yes interesting article by Nick Cohen. When it all ends in tears some of the Labourites will need his services
