What would you ask a Jehovah’s Witness if you could?

BreakingCycles · 17/01/2026 19:23

Hello I am doing a bit of personal research for my own curiosity.
I was raised a Jehovah’s Witness but managed to get out.
Because I was raised in it, my thinking has been shaped differently than people who were not. I am very curious what such people might think about jws.
So what have you always wondered about jws but felt you couldn’t ask?
Or what are / were your perceptions of them from what you’ve seen around you?
No question too small or silly.
I appreciate all perspectives with open curiosity.
thanks in advance to any who shares!

Why is having a blood transfusion such a big no no? For example, if a lady needed one after giving birth would they really turn one down and risk a baby not having a mum if she bled to death?

You could say the same about people canvassing on behalf of candidates in elections.
I wouldn’t say it’s rude of them. Any I’ve encountered have been nothing but polite. Intrusive maybe, but 30 seconds to say ‘no thank you’ is hardly a significant hardship. I’ve never had anyone try to press it if I’ve said I’m not interested.
In fact, I find the people who try to get you to signup for charity donations outside supermarkets far ruder and more intrusive than any religious doorsteppers I’ve ever met.

But they’re outside supermarkets. Not on your doorstep.

And I find the political chuggers just as intrusive and rude. Like I’m going to change from the party I’ve voted for twenty years because Gavin and his turquoise tie rock up at my door.

It implies I’m incapable of making my own decisions.

Blood transfusions. I will never, ever understand how a JW will refuse blood even if it could be lifesaving. Especially for their own child.

This….100% this….do not understand the rationale at all x

ChristmasLeftovers · 17/01/2026 21:17

You may not celebrate birthdays, but why don’t you wish anyone a happy birthday out of respect for other’s beliefs? Why do you ask for your children to be removed from class if the class is singing happy birthday to a child - why can’t they stay in the classroom and just not sing?

And in the same vein…I am an atheist, though will wish my friends and colleagues happy Diwali/Eid etc. Why don’t you do the same, out of respect for other religions?

Absolutely this for me.

I would have died in childbirth after a major haemorrhage if I’d not had transfusions. I know everyday how blessed I am to have been given that precious blood.

what the reasoning? That my soul is damned? I’d take an eternity in hell so long as my little girl has a mummy to tuck her in at night.

They say because bible says dont consume blood , but it refers to bloody meats. Its the same in islam too. Its ridiculous i know. I couldn't fathom giving birth and my child needing a transfusion and then saying no. I mean the guilt would be immense.

ChurchWindows · 17/01/2026 21:22

Interesting about the 'intrusive doorknockers'.

Last summer I was in my sitting room with the windows open. Two men leaned in through the window and asked to speak to me.

They had let themselves into my garden, walked up the path and just leaned in. Luckily I was decorating not doing something private at the time. As a woman, on my own in the house it was pretty shocking.

They were Jehovah's Witnesses. I said I wasn't interested - happy for them to be happy with their choices, but it wasn't for me. They stayed there a good ten minutes talking. Polite enough but for goodness sake, what a cheek and an imposition.

I'm passionate about organic gardening but I think they'd be pretty narked if I went and hung through their window on a weekend morning banging on about compost until I was blue in the face.

How is that acceptable? Why DO they think anyone will be interested?

When I mean same in islam, meaning dont consume bloody meats. Not also not allowing blood transfusions.

Its very bizzare.

pimplebum · 17/01/2026 21:23

we’re you shunned ? and is shunning a thing that happens regularly? Is it a total cut off or just a bit of cold shoulder ?

do any have blood transfusions in the sly and keep it quite or do they really die from lack of blood

is there a quota for making converts , is your status related to how many you convert

how many does the average JW convert in their lifetime

BeeHive909 · 17/01/2026 21:24

How do you feel knowing your family or children could make it into heaven but you won’t. It’s mind baffling the amount of cruel things they get drilled into them. They have a Kingdom Hall about 5 minutes from my house and I used to get countless knockers. They don’t come now as I used to say the same thing I’ve had numerous blood transfusions now do one

In all honesty, I’d prefer them on my doorstep. I can choose not to open my door, but if I want food, I have no choice but to be harassed by them.
I’m a staunch atheist, but I also have a massive interest in religion (I teach RE) so I suppose that probably makes a difference to how I view it.
I can see why it would be annoying to most people, but at the same time, I also understand (even if I don’t share the belief) why they do it.

Is that not the same for anyone who believes in heaven though?
If there is a heaven, I’m definitely not going. I have fully rejected God. The Bible teaches that the only way to heaven is through Jesus.
My daughter is a Christian. If there’s a heaven, she’s got a pretty good chance of going.

Snoringdogsfarting · 17/01/2026 21:32

I would ask why they pretend not to celebrate Christmas but have Christmas lunch and call it present giving day. I would ask why they are so sure they are right about everything and dictate their views on others. I would ask why it’s ok to cheat on their wife and still be a member. I would ask why they think they are better than everyone else. I would ask what is lacking in their life that they have to belong to a cult. I would ask why they take little children to meetings that don’t end until 9pm on school nights and why they take them to whole weekend meetings. I could go on

I would have too, after my 2nd child. There is no way whatsoever would my children be left without their mum if I could be prevented.

Yeah I suppose that’s true. I just know that JWs believe only a certain amount of them get in. Seems cruel to drill it into your children. My mums a Christian but In her eyes as long as people are good they get a resting place and that’s good enough for me.

I did once ask a JW how they can be sure that the beef they buy in Tesco doesn't have any blood left in it. I mean, it's a chunk of mammal. Even if you let the carcass hang for a while you're not going to get every last red blood cell to drain out of it.

Apparently that's one of those questions you're not supposed to ask.

My understanding (from speaking to a JW student) is that while only a few hundred thousand will go to heaven, everyone else (who is deserving) will be resurrected to live out eternity in heaven on earth.
So not quite as bad as it first sounds.
