i have recently been thinking a lot about religion and wondering how many believe in god and also what made you come to the decision of believing?

I would love to believe in God again. This will probably sound bizarre, but I did something very unchristian ( I had an abortion - I was brought up as a Catholic and always believed it was a very grave sin). In order to live with what I'd done, I watched a lot of videos by atheists and managed to convince myself there wasn't a God. I'm not explaining myself very well, but I used to love the comfort believing in God gave me, but now - if I convince myself God exists again, I have to face the idea of being punished for what I did.

@walkingaroundsostrenegrene I'm so sorry you went through that.
Many Christians believe in a God of love and not a punitive one, so you could reframing your faith through that lens?
I'm reading the Jesus Storybook Bible !and finding it very comforting.

How?

You presumably believe in God?

I don’t. To me, Santa Claus is a perfect analogy. A made up story.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/01/2026 10:50

CurlewKate · 05/01/2026 09:41

Really? Do you mean it’s not a good place for Christians to have their say without question?

Quite.

how Funny 🥱 maybe she believes in god because it helps her to cope or keep her going.

Red125 · 05/01/2026 10:54

No. I think Religion and ideas of God developed to explain the world before we had science, and to control the population.

If there is a god and they wanted to be believed in they could easily show themselves and avoid any doubt. If they're not doing this as a "test of faith" then what a dick, honestly.

Let people believe what they want. Do you mock people who believe in Allah as well? Or is it just Christians who are fair game?

ViolaPlains · 05/01/2026 10:57

I do. RC from birth.

CurlewKate · 05/01/2026 10:57

Bookwormmumuk · 05/01/2026 10:36

Yes. I was an atheist for most of my life though then God did amazing things that were hard to ignore.

What sort of things?

I believe all religion is nonsense. Some of it very dangerous nonsense.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 05/01/2026 10:59

No. I used to when I was young but as I got older I started having more questions but without getting answers that really added up. I then looked into different religions to see if their claims about god/gods were any more coherent but I failed.

Maybe one day I'll come across a description of god(s) that makes sense to me and/or I'll have an experience that can only be ascribed to a god. If that ever happens I'll change my mind but until then I'll carry on as I am.

I do let people believe what they want to believe. But that’s not a very interesting response to the question “Do you believe in God?” A thread of nos and yesses?

And yes, I would react in exactly the same way if I was asked about Allah. Christians pretending they are somehow uniquely singled out in this country is tedious.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/01/2026 11:05

Incidentally, using the analogy of Santa Claus isn’t “mocking” anyone. Both fictitious characters with absolutely no evidence.

I find it astonishing that there are people who believe the world is just a few thousand years old, despite all of the evidence to the contrary.

ClaredeBear · 05/01/2026 11:43

Not at all. We’re all part of nature and frankly, if a god or creator was proven there’s no way I’d worship them - look at the state we’re in!

Ah yes replying with “do you believe in Santa clause” definitely makes the thread more interesting 😂 it just makes you look silly. Criticise Islam and you will be accused of being Islamophobic. Nobody cares if you criticise Christianity. It’s not tedious at all.

WhatIsTheCharge · 05/01/2026 12:01

No.
And if I’m wrong and there is a god? Then I can only conclude that he’s a sadist and a narcissist.

Some scientists today like Laura Mersini-Houghton do not see a conflict between science and religion in essence.
I have studied this the Big bang theory that it doesn't rule out there being a creator God with the cosmic inflation theory. Science does not rule this out and this is where current thought is at critically I think with the Justin Webb telescope and Vera Rubin will be interesting developments.

God of the gaps.

Her Bio does not say she is a Christian, or a believer. And makes no difference if she is or not.

The God of the gaps is interesting because it totally matches the evolution of Gods. When science fills a gap, theologians find a new gap to squeeze their God into. And now it's being squeezed into theoretical physics. But it still leaves a bit of an issue for them. Where did their Gods come from ?

For many non believers believing in God and believing in Santa Claus is exactly the same. You may not like that-and I can see why you wouldn’t-but it’s true. And no, you will not be called islamophobic if you criticise Islam.

HostaCentral · 05/01/2026 12:22

I don't believe in a religious God. I don't believe God communicates with man, nor gives instructions on how to live your life. That's all manmade, particularly "man" made nonsense to control the population in the hands of a minority of .....men.

My spirituality, as far as it exists, roots itself in nature and science. It doesn't matter that we don't know all the answers, I don't need to fill that gap with an anthropomorphic higher being.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 05/01/2026 12:25

Unicorndreams24 · 04/01/2026 23:21

@MJEBinAthens that’s how I also feel . I believe that there must be a creator because otherwise how did it all begin? Yeh very random!

I'm a massive atheist but I also struggle with that question - "How did it all begin?" But the idea of a creator doesn't solve that question either, because what created the creator? Does God have a God? And if so what created that God? Is it just Gods all the way up?

So no, I don't believe in a God.

Coincidence.

Kirbert2 · 05/01/2026 12:32

Absolutely not.

My son had cancer and almost died. If a God did exist, they can fuck right off.

I don't know anything about Laura Mersini-Houghton or the telescope Pp referenced, but i believe God is eternal or outside of time. He always has been and always will be.

Parker231 · 05/01/2026 12:42

No - I only believe in things which exist and where there is solid evidence.

I agree - why would anyone believe in something which has done such a rubbish job, hasn’t helped and left the world in such a mess?
