Thankyou so much everyone! I will enjoy looking back at this thread again and again.

We are in a hard season of life at the moment. Small children, lack of sleep, lots of illness and juggling work.

Very glad I found this Christian corner of mumsnet.

Proverbs 31:8 is close to my heart as a foster carer:

Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Protect the rights of all who are helpless.

ApplePippa · 13/10/2024 08:35

Lots of my favourites are already mentioned, but I also like:

Psalm 23:4
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Not a promise that we won't go through dark times, but that we won't go through them alone.

Happyinarcon · 13/10/2024 08:42

OhMaria2 · 12/10/2024 22:01

Isiah 5:20
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

There's been a lot of it about lately

I feel I am SURROUNDED by this. So many things we are told now is the opposite of reality. Like leaving crazy homeless drug addicted people on the streets is somehow respecting their human rights and freedom to choose how to live and we should be more tolerant. In reality it’s just neglect, abuse and budget cuts with a few fancy words.

I love the hymn based on that, as pants the hart.

I didn't know that quote (I'm a rubbish scholar!) so hope you don't mind I've marked it for my next church mag article. And might use it for my winter warm spaces advertising.

Grmumpy · 13/10/2024 09:24

Once in hospital, very scared, waiting in the middle of the night to be taken to theatre for surgery, I found a Gideon bible by the bed. I read a coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man dies but once. I took from that don’t be fearful. It helped and still helps control fear.

T4phage · 13/10/2024 12:22

Isaiah 5:20

'Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!'

Yes, I like this too. I remember it when I'm doubting myself or my judgement regarding things that just feel wrong.

Not a Bible quote, but I love The Prayer of Serenity.

'God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference'

This has brought me a lot of peace over the years because I'm a person who overthinks and worries incessantly.

Be still.

I think it's an amazing bit of advice applicable to so many situations. Has helped me survive on occasion.

My favourite hymn is "Be still, my soul, the Lord is on your side..." ( to "Finlandia"). It really does still my soul.

This is a wonderful thread.
Thank you for starting it @MarigoldSpider

Gemmy96 · 13/10/2024 13:34

The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.

Fink · 13/10/2024 15:43

My actual favourite is 1 of 3:

Psalm 137:3 '[I thank you for] your faithfulness and love [which] excel all we ever knew of you.'

Psalm 115:1 'Not to us, Lord, not to us, but to your name be the glory.'

Or 1 John 4:19 'We love because he first loved us.'

My comedy favourite is from Psalm 44:12. I was used to one, sensible, translation. Then one day in an Anglican chapel we sang 'You have sold your people for trifle and yet you have gained nothing from the sale.' I corpsed with laughter at the image of the God of Israel walking away disconsolately with a sherry trifle.

Lampzade · 13/10/2024 15:51

Psalm 46:10

’Be still and know that I am God’

Great thread

Not just a verse
Mine is Isaiah 53

Stupendous prophecy written 700 years before the birth of our Lord Jesus

Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; and when we see Him, no beauty that we should desire Him.

He is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. and we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

But He was wounded for our transgressions, was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth.

He was taken from prison and from judgment, and who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgressions of My people He was stricken.

And they made His grave with the wicked and with the rich at His death,

Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.

Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,

And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labour of His soul, and be satisfied.

By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities.

Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong, because He poured out His soul unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors, and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

I absolutely love this version of it by the Sons of Korah

QuirkyEagle · 13/10/2024 18:19

What a lovely thread. Not sure which book of the Bible this is from but one of my favourite verses is:

I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.

My favourite hymn is "Be still, my soul, the Lord is on your side..." ( to "Finlandia"). It really does still my soul.

I lost my gran last year.

At the moment I listen to this hymn a lot because I just want God to come and sort everything out, to not worry about things because he will be with me and put everything in its place.

DefenderOfTheDry · 13/10/2024 20:24

I find these verses very comforting and helpful when my priorities slip or I lose perspective.

24 No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
25 “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?
26 Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?
27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
28 “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing,
29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are.
30 And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?
31 “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’
32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.
33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
34So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

My current prayer is that I am not a "lukewarm" christian, half in and half out depending on the day or my mood or who I am surrounded by.

I would appreciate any and all prayers against my tenancy towards lukewarm-ness. Help me be all in, Father.

Amen.

Remember, faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. You're in my prayers tonight.

Isaiah 26:3
New International Version
3 You will keep in perfect peace
those whose minds are steadfast,
because they trust in you.

DeanElderberry · 14/10/2024 18:17

There are so many, but I start each day with a verse from Psalm 118; 'This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad'.

There are days when it seems more obvious than others. It is one of the 'Hallel psalms' that Jews sing at Passover, and was sung by Jesus after the Last Supper before he headed out into the garden, knowing what was coming. It is used in churches over Easter.

DeanElderberry · 14/10/2024 18:27

And I love this from Jeremiah 31.
New Revised Standard Version
But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

God is in us. We just need to reach down and there is the covenant, waiting for us.

And I love the Book of Wisdom, and the stories/novellas - God being so gentle and funny with that silly ass Jonah, and Tobit and Anna having a ridiculous row about a goat, and all the Gospels, and the letter to the Hebrews. Such richness - well worth reading the lot.
