With the latest prayer thread coming to an end, we thought we would create a new thread for prayer and general chat too - we had chat threads running for years alongside prayer threads, and we thought it would be great to combine them. I try and collate some of the prayer requests from the last thread in the next few days. In the meantime, dive in! Lurkers/newbies - you are welcome to post. Feel free to start any chat subject about Christianity, church, worship etc, and do share any prayer needs.
Would love to hear from those who were on previous threads and haven't been around for a while, too. Come and let us know how you are.

Thanks for the prayers for Ursula.

Schadenfreude I started with the nearly infallible history of Christianity by nick page and loved it. I've just bought "the wrong messiah" as I'd been meaning to read it in conjunction with the part of the church year where Jesus begins his ministry. I really enjoyed the longest week and kingdom of fools last year through lent and into when we were reading Acts every week after Easter. MHD It seems I have missed reading his Christmas book around Christmas so I will start the next advent. I really need that book.

@pantherrose hello too I don't like to miss saying hello to new posters, especially as you added such a thoughtful post.

Madhairday · 18/01/2021 22:29

@ZenNudist I adore kingdom of fools. I think it's my favourite. He gave such an amazing flavour of the early church, it made me really excited.

These sound brilliant!

I usually have about three books on the go at once and will add these to my pile.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/01/2021 07:36

Just got this triple pack

Nick Page: The Longest Week, The Wrong Messiah, Kingdom of Fools

from Amazon kindle for £3.99.

I usually buy "real" books, and it chokes me to make a deal with the devil, Bezos, but I couldn't pass up the chance. Blush

Madhairday · 19/01/2021 10:04

Ah @SchadenfreudePersonified you won't regret it. His writing is so accessible, funny and profound all at once. One of my favourite authors. His eye for detail is incredible and you learn so many fascinating things. And it's all underpinned by his absolute love for Jesus and Scripture.
I want to re-read all of mine now!

That's a bargain. I paid that for the one book. I should start reading it now but I'm feeling indolent and just mumsnetting instead. Can't seem to get going on any reading now. I've got 'God and the Pandemic" by Tom Wright on the go, it's taking me ages and it's only short.

Dutchoma · 19/01/2021 22:14

We are going to do Tom Wright God and the pandemic in Zoom Lent housegroups and I have just ordered it. Not sure how many people there will be in one group, last year, just before the first lockdown `i think there were about 8 in each group. Should be interesting.

Ilikegreenshoes · 20/01/2021 07:30

I have just read this whole thread, even though it took me until the end of the first page to realise how long ago it started! Blush

What a lovely, encouraging, calm discussion this has been, and a testimony of God's faithfulness to you all through a very difficult year. I've been on Mumsnet on and off for nearly 11 years and never knew you lovely lot were on here!

Can I join in please? I might be the only "happy clappy" Christian in this chat Shock but my beautiful grandparents on one side were Catholic, my Nana on the other side was Presbyterian and I have friends and family from various other church backgrounds, so I know that the truths we believe in common are more important than the form our worship takes.

I am also in Australia, but have loved ones in the UK and you've all been very much in my thoughts over the last year.

Anyway, just wanted to say hello. I've been praying throughout the thread (albeit a little late), have been so encouraged by your stories of finding God, and have also downloaded the lectio app, thanks for the recommendation!

Dutchoma · 20/01/2021 07:47

You are more than welcome Ilikegreenshoes. Are you able to go to church at the moment? We are not at the moment apart from having streamed services, happy clappy or not..
So just takea pew, help yourself to a drink of choice, if you are lucky someone will have filled the biscuit tin.

I'm not keen on Tom Wright myself - I think he's very clever, but not a particularly easy read even with his "Tom Wright" books (his academic ones are as NT Wright).
SchadenfreudePersonified · 20/01/2021 11:55

Welcome greenshoes.

Ilikegreenshoes · 20/01/2021 16:26

Thanks so much Dutchoma, I'll help myself to a Timtam, if there are any in the biscuit tin. Grin

We have been very fortunate in Aus (particularly here in Perth) to have had very few cases of Covid, so have been able to return to a somewhat normal state of affairs.

Church was shut for about six months last year, but we have been blessed to be able to meet again since around October, with some minor changes in place.

I have every sympathy for you all and will carry on praying for God's loving kindness to continue to strengthen you as you wait for restrictions to ease.

Ilikegreenshoes · 20/01/2021 16:27

And thank you Schadenfreude. Smile

SchadenfreudePersonified · 20/01/2021 17:15

Just found this - I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but though some people might be interested.

It's a presentation entitled "Mark: the strangest Gospel"

I've started the first Nick Page book - he's very readable and accessible.

Madhairday · 20/01/2021 18:51

Welcome, @Ilikegreenshoes. You can come and join me in the charismatic corner and we'll belt out worship anthems together. Great to see you!

🖐 🤚 I'm pretty happy clappy too....

(Good thing I checked what Autocorrect had done there, am NOT 'happy flappy'!)

Just realised I think I asked for prayer a while ago for my brother, who had Down's and was in the later stages of dementia.

He died on Sunday morning after testing positive for Covid 7 days previously. But quietly, in his sleep. Give thanks for this, and for the DNR / Respect agreements we put in place months ago, with the support of very sensitive and helpful carers, GP and learning disability psychiatrist, meaning morphine etc etc were ready when needed and no one tried to rush him to a frightening hosp ward or make him wear an oxygen mask or the like.

Now grappling with organising a lockdown funeral, which is definitely not easy.

Madhairday · 20/01/2021 22:49

I'm so sorry for your loss, @JanuaryChill. Flowers

Oh JanuaryChill, I'm so sorry to hear about your dbro. Flowers Praying for comfort, and that the arrangements would go smoothly.

And thanks, Madhairday.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/01/2021 08:10

I'm so sorry January.

Holding you all in my prayers.

Dutchoma · 21/01/2021 08:38

I do hope you can organise a funeral that truly honours your brother’s life, Januarychill It is so difficult to let go of a loved one in the way you have done and I share in your gratitude that all was peaceful and he is now beyond all pain and suffering.

lightand · 21/01/2021 20:40

I am sorry for your loss too, JanuaryChill.

JanuaryChill · 21/01/2021 21:40

Thank you. Am giving thanks this evening as my DS13 has chosen to come to the funeral with me - I'd given the children the choice as they hadn't seen my DB for years, and of course there's the limit of 30 for funerals. I thought they'd both choose to stay at home but he's coming with me 🧡

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 21/01/2021 23:55

That’s lovely of him January.

A peaceful death, despite everything going on at the moment is something to be thankful for.

Keeping you both in my prayers. Take care of yourself.

JanuaryChill · 21/01/2021 23:57

Thanks so much (nice that we see each other on another thread too).

I do believe that in this particular case, Covid was something of a blessing.

Funeral plans starting to take shape.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 22/01/2021 18:19

I have a bit of a confession to make January. It took me quite a while to figure out your name change. I was being a bit dim. Blush

It wasn't until I was thinking there was three of us on both threads last month that the penny started to drop. And then I repeated the same error this month.
