I think people should be careful doing Reiki

This post assumes a belief in spirituality so I'm not interested in debating that specifically. If you want to please start your own thread.

From what I can see, reiki is channeling occult energy through people's bodies and is therefore potentially risky. It seems to me that new age practitioners will repeatedly say they don't believe in malevolent entities but I think this is naive.

One of my friends told me that his dad was never the same after he became involved with reiki.

And also nearly everyone I've met who has done it was told by the reiki practitioner that they are 'special' have a 'gift' or could easily become a reiki master.

Meta, you may believe that it is unethical for the NHS to refer patients to private practice, but it is standard practice. Our NHS mental health hub routinely refers patients and when I presented with pelvic arthropathy I was directed to private practice as their waiting list was so long that it was doubtful that I would receive treatment at all.

magpiemischief · 11/01/2018 14:46

Dione I was the one who said I thought it was unethical for the NHS to refer to private practice. I still do. It is a sad state of affairs where this has become needed because of waiting lists etc. I think much more money needs to be invested in the NHS along with a review and overhaul of current practice. Not that I'm not very thankful we have an NHS. But that is a whole other thread!

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/01/2018 14:48

Thanks for the clarification Magpie. Smile

Sorry Meta. Thanks

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 11/01/2018 14:49

Reiki is channelling ki, which is life force, through people's bodies.

DullAndOld · 11/01/2018 14:55

Buttocks saying stuff like that isn't going to convince the cynics.:)
Could I just say, that two separate people did it to my dog, and they both advised that he should go to the vet about his pain. At no point did they claim that they could 'heal' him.
So an 'add on' rather than an 'alternative'

Snowdrop18 · 11/01/2018 15:32

Billywig "My mum dabbled in it years ago and it IS very relaxing to be on the receiving end of a 'treatment'"

I can't imagine why it would be relaxing to have someone waving their hands over you?

That thing about "no proof that it's impossible" sounds like something Trump would say.

metacrisis · 11/01/2018 15:38

Could I just say, that two separate people did it to my dog, and they both advised that he should go to the vet about his pain. At no point did they claim that they could 'heal' him

So they did nothing, sent you to someone who could actually help your dog and charged you how much?

metacrisis · 11/01/2018 15:41

Meta, they don't lie

So they give people sugar pills and tell them they are sugar pills and can't possibly work?

DullAndOld · 11/01/2018 15:45

they advised us where his pain was and how he was feeling and there was no charge.
Seemed fine to me. He didn't need the vet once, he just needed someone to stop picking him up in a certain way.
Not sure why this would upset someone so much ..
and please don't start telling me I am stupid etc because I am far from it.

metacrisis · 11/01/2018 15:48

Who's upset? No-one.
But they conned you. They lied to you. Are you not upset? You should be.

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2018 15:49

Dione-if you mean Vickers et al, their findings showed that actual acupuncture had a statistically insignificant better result than sham accupuncture, which had a statistically insignificant better result than nothing. Which considering the power of the placebo effect is the same as "not working" Questions were also raised about the impartiality of the report.

metacrisis · 11/01/2018 15:49

And you didn't take him to the vet? So you ignored both of their advice, so why are you telling us they were good? You didn;t think so if you ignored them!

DullAndOld · 11/01/2018 15:54

once again, meta, you are showing that you are not really reading what other people are writing you are just using your quick answers to show off your superiority.

It was 2 separate occasions. Once he had already been to the vet, the other time he didn't need to go,, he needed to be handled differently. They both helped us understand better what was going on with him.

Cant really see why that bothers you.

DullAndOld · 11/01/2018 15:55

nobody conned me, btw.

metacrisis · 11/01/2018 15:56

So they gave you advice, which you ignored, but they were really good?

Come on now, be reasonable at least!

Cariadd · 11/01/2018 15:57

Western science is only one way of looking at the world surely. There are many other sciences like Eastern and African for example.

DullAndOld · 11/01/2018 15:59

Meta, if you have comprehension problems please do not bother me with them. I am sure your local FE college has literacy classes.

metacrisis · 11/01/2018 16:01

Honey. I'm not the one talking about randoms waving hands over my dog and doing....something which you can't explain and don't even understand? And you don't see the issue with telling us how great they were while ignoring their advice to you...I'm not the one who needs classes in something.

metacrisis · 11/01/2018 16:02

Western science is only one way of looking at the world surely. There are many other sciences like Eastern and African for example

that's pretty racist. I think you'll find the science in Africa or "the east" is also just science. There are not different races of science.

Rudgie47 · 11/01/2018 16:03

I had a very strange experience with Reiki.
At the end of the treatment i felt like I was being lightly tapped all over, like you would pat a cat.
I had my eyes closed and opened them and the guy was stood at the side of the room moving his hands about. He was nowhere near me,he couldnt have reached me.
It freaked me right out and the man made me feel very uncomftable as well as he was very intense and looked right into my eyes!

metacrisis · 11/01/2018 16:05

It's been suggested that some reiki practitioners are actually doing a low level hypnotism on people, which can explain the sensations. It's totally unethical though.

Snowdrop18 · 11/01/2018 16:11

Cariadd - I don't see science as "western". In fact I think there are many eastern countries who would be quite stunned by that statement!

Vitalogy · 11/01/2018 16:12

Wow five more pages! Shock

Socrates, actually. Shakespeare was just quoting it as a well known by then proverb. Is that right. Do you truly understand it though.

Snowdrop18 · 11/01/2018 16:12

btw is it normal to have a reiki treatment with eyes closed?

Cariadd · 11/01/2018 16:13

Western science relies on empiricism whereas Eastern science does not feel the need to prove empirically. Ki/chi is Eastern and this is where Reki originated from.
