I work in a leisure centre and was told I had to leave asap as a group of Jewish young men had hired the whole centre and as a woman I couldn't stay. The receptionist was told she couldn't move from the reception area whilst they were swimming. Can you explain why? I haven't seen any or know of any Jewish people in this area so obviously just visiting .

Stepaway: you seem to be implying that mini has lied.
Would you justify this cursing/ spitting behaviour?

OrgyofSausages · 21/08/2017 11:23

WTF is "symbolic"spitting?

lizzieoak · 21/08/2017 13:06

It does seem extremely odd from an Orthodox person. Not saying it didn't happen, but it's very out of character.

How did he know she was "cursing" (being Orthodox she wouldn't actually swear, so not sure what your dh meant there).

Bobbiepin · 21/08/2017 13:15

Mini that's awful (I am wondering how DP knew she was swearing at him in Yiddish though). Not that it excuses it, disgusting behaviour from anyone, anywhere.

StepAwayFromCake · 21/08/2017 13:32

Symbolic spitting:

In some countries people spit superstitiously to avert misfortune. This has evolved, among Jews, into a symbolic 'spit', thrice repeated. Try saying "TFU-TFU-TFU" quickly, with no added vowel sounds. Some say it "tu-tu-tu". It is generally said when something good has happened, particularly to your own loved ones.

It is in no way pejorative.

MiniTheMinx · 21/08/2017 13:53

It doesn't make sense, I agree. But I wasn't there, I believe what he told me, I have no reason to doubt it.

The children looked down when she did it the first time. The second time he thought she must have been cursing or at least being aggressive because of her tone and demeanor.

Ritual spitting? Really ?

I have nothing against orthodox, if anything I have only admiration. This has confused me and DP was very upset.

MiniTheMinx · 21/08/2017 13:54

Stepaway, I will ask him if he can repeat what she said

StepAwayFromCake · 21/08/2017 14:45

I don't justify bad behaviour. I'm just trying to understand it, maybe reinterpret it from a culturally different point of view. But what you have described is so far from my own experience (and i have known many Orthodox and Haredi Jews), that I cannot really reconcile it.

Ideally, a religious person would also follow strictly the rules which require them to behave with respect and courtesy towards others. But even religious people can be rude, entitled prats. It doesn't reflect on their religion, it reflects on them.

StepAwayFromCake · 21/08/2017 14:46

No, not ritual spitting, symbolic spitting.

DioneTheDiabolist · 21/08/2017 14:51

Another lovely example of how religious doctrine teaches that women are pieces of shit

I'very had my chips totally peed on today. Ignore me.

Another example of anti religionists using this forum to confirm their own pre-existing bias and vent RL frustations on the posters here just because they believe differently to them.

OrgyofSausages · 21/08/2017 19:05

Be that as it may, stepaway, it behoves people to behave like decent humans and not pigs in public doesn't it? Spitting in public whether 'ritual' or not is disgusting and piglike. I couldn't give a shit what religion they are.

DioneTheDiabolist · 21/08/2017 22:18

Do pigs spit Orgy? Or is your post not very veiled antisemitism?

StepAwayFromCake · 21/08/2017 22:27

Give her the benefit of the doubt: just selective reading.

Not ritual spitting.

Jews have plenty of^ rituals - spitting is categorically not^ one of them.

If a Jew spits, actually spits, it is nothing to do with their religion.

StepAwayFromCake · 21/08/2017 22:28

Argh FGS - total italics fails.

OrgyofSausages · 21/08/2017 23:41

Are pigs jewish dione?or are you just a little dumb?
Anyone who spits on another person is a dirty pig. Get over yourself.

DioneTheDiabolist · 21/08/2017 23:49

Are pigs Jewish dione?
What? Confused

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 23/08/2017 12:44

Me again bobbiepin , or anybody else that has words of advice - would it be considered odd/weird, if I applied to go on a CST run security course?? And would I be allowed ??

Bobbiepin · 23/08/2017 13:22

Interesting question. I'm assuming you aren't Jewish? I think if you did a course then you would be expected to help out with security at a synagogue. I'd give head office a call and see what they say.

tehmina23 · 23/08/2017 14:22

There are large Jewish communities in Bournemouth - I say communities plural because there are quite a few branches of Judaism here.

For example the Haredi Jews have a large community (with their own synagogue I presume).

Then there is the Liberal synagogue, the Reform synagogue, I believe there's an Orthodox one, then there's the Chabad-Lubavitchers.

The Haredi Jews have lived in Bournemouth since the time of the pogroms in Eastern Europe in the 1900s. They have a distinct dress & speak Yiddish I think?

The Lubavitchers are afaik quite new to town, they are unusual in that they are proselytising Jews.

StepAwayFromCake · 23/08/2017 19:35

Tehmina, Lubavitch only proselytise to Jews. They are interested in bringing non-practicing Jews 'back into the fold'.

Bobbiepin · 23/08/2017 23:09

@tehmina only Reform, Liberal and Progressive Jews acknowledge converts. The other more religious branches of Judaism would not proselytise (new word for me, thank you) to anyone, except maybe (really maybe) other Jews who they deem to be less religious.

As a whole, Judaism floats between the belief that we are the chosen people, and that is a birthright not something we choose, and believing that there are many paths to God and none are more worthy than others.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 23/08/2017 23:32

No, I'm Christian, but quite willing to do volunteer on security. I just wondered if it would be seen as disrespectful in any way?

lizzieoak · 23/08/2017 23:51

Bobbie, that's not quite right. Though Jews don't seek converts, hey certainly accept them (after repeated applications and much study). I know at least half a dozen people who've converted (from Gentiles) to various streams of orthodoxy.

tehmina23 · 24/08/2017 08:37

I read on the local Lubavitcher website that they welcome people with one Jewish grandparent.

I'm not thinking of converting although my nan was from Jewish ancestry.

Bobbiepin · 24/08/2017 09:03

Lizzie and Tehmina we're both right! Converts are required to commit to a lot of study and often are some of the most religious people you may meet. However not all branches of Judaism recognise conversion. For example to marry under United Synagogue (orthadox) you need to prove your Jewish heritage by providing at least your parents Ketubah (marriage contract). Without this, you would not be allowed to marry. In terms of a Jewish grandparent, that greatly increases the likelihood of your blood heritage so you are considered Jewish to start with, even more so if it is from the maternal side.
