EEEEEEEEEEEK ! DH saw our ghost!

We have lived in our house, for around 4 1/2 years..it is almost 100 years old, and we know at least two people died in it......

Not long after we moved in, I was going to go downstairs to get a drink, and I switched on the landing light, and got the shock of my life, when I saw a young boy sat a couple of steps up from the bottom of the stairs..! i ran back into our room and refused to go downstairs.

When i was feeding DD in the night, i used to often get a cool breeze over my feet , and DD would stop feeding and look up and when she learnt to smile, she smiled at whatever was there....

anyhoo, the odd thing happened from time to time, and then tonight, when DH got home, he came running upstairs and said he had seen the boy. As he stepped into the porch to open the front door, he saw what he thought was DS running through the hall, into the lounge. When he got into the hall, he realised, the lounge door was closed and locked and DS then ran down the stairs to greet him !!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKK!!

so, what do we do, if anything??

Contact the local spiritualist church. They won't care if you are christian and they will come out and take a looksee.

Of course I'd call it a feature on the sales documents when I sold the house and moved to somewhere less freaking scary myself

I live in a 16th century thatched place with bats, bees and a lot of creaking and even human remains in the garden (we own what used to be a church next door too) but NO GHOSTS!

lulumama · 27/03/2007 22:19

no rhubs, was being ironic or sarcastic or something !

don;t want to move, tinkerbelle ! house swap with you !??!?!

Rhubarb · 27/03/2007 22:21

tinkerbell, some of us can stay in the most haunted of houses and not see a ghost.

No offence to anyone, but I do think it is interesting that those who do believe see them and those that don't, don't.

lulumama · 27/03/2007 22:22

i didn't believe , really ,until i had an experience years ago !

OP posts:
Rhubarb · 27/03/2007 22:23

Ah but you see if I have an "experience" I would find a rational explanation.

If I hear footfalls on the stairs I would blame water pipes expanding.

If I saw a shadow I would blame my tired eyes.

If I saw Tommy Tiernan I would shag him.

fransmom · 27/03/2007 22:29

as for those that don't believe rhubarb phooey! my dp didn't til he saw one

fransmom · 27/03/2007 22:29

sorry, db

Rhubarb · 27/03/2007 22:31

Guess I'll have to wait then.

I do have an open mind, but until I have an experience I can't really believe can I?

Same with religion I guess.

lulumama · 27/03/2007 22:32

I come at this from an obscure angle. My background is in infrasound research (among other things). It has been found that in places - particularly old stone buildings, caves and basically anywhere which isn't of modern construction (i.e concrete) infrasound can build up and in those circumstances you are more likely to see ghosts.

Whether that means ghosts exist or that your mind is altered to believe they do is debatable. I can only tell you that infrasound is used to cause physical symptoms (including explosive diarrhea - what fun) and hallucinations in combat situations.

I personally have a hard time believing in ghosts. Yet I had an experience I can't explain some years back. So I'm open minded on such points. The reality is that if you believe and it happens to you then you probably need to deal with it (unless it's a lovely ghost who finds the lost kit kat in which case by all means encourage it).

tinkerbellhadpiles · 27/03/2007 22:34

Rhubarb - Tommytiernan of tommytiernan.com???? Really? Seriously?

Now if you'd have suggested that if you'd have seen a DEAD musician you'd have shagged him I would have been impressed. (Shocked but impressed).

Rhubarb · 27/03/2007 22:35

Did I mention Tommy Tiernan? Oops!

That research tinkerbell was televised a while ago, they also found a higher level of summat else that acted like a magnet energy capable of moving things about and causing hallucinations.

So I dunno.

Rhubarb · 27/03/2007 22:36

Tommy is on my mind because I am constantly shagging him. I find dead musicians a bit too stiff really and very selfish in bed.

sophiewd · 27/03/2007 22:42

My sister took her ghosts with her when she moved a little girl; and a dog. When she was packing to move they unpacked, broke lightbulbs. Ahe gave them a good talking to, told them she was taking them with her and things settled down. When she moved into her new house she told the ones thta were ther to play nicely. The old lady that lived in her new house used to wind the ghosts up and they still get pissed off when her name is mentioned.

Hillary · 27/03/2007 22:46

I'v alway been around ghosts for some reason from a baby/toddler I used to tell my mum about a lady who came to see me, my room was haunted, things used to fly off shelves etc, I had a bad childhood and used to talk to my ghost all the time, in my car I get knees in my back if I'm not concentrating or if i'm going too fast (its not the children as my baby is on that side) my stables was haunted, the horses wouldn't ride into the corner of the school, lights would turn on and off, bolts would go accross stable doors and lock you in when you were the only one there, someone would pull your leg whilst you would be waling with a wheelbarrow and pull you over...so much...

My dd now sees ghosts too, I don't get scared by it anymore I find it a comfort at times, I always greet them. I have however gone into buildings and left pretty sharpish some are angry and not to be reconed with.

I see alot when out driving, people have ran out in front of my car and not been there, I once saw a little boy wondering down the road, I stopped the car got out and there was nobody there (it was a straight road with fields no hiding places) I even reversed once and a big fat boy with a tank top was standing right behind my car, I reversed through him!

Its a strange world. (& I'm not on drugs)

tinkerbellhadpiles · 27/03/2007 22:53

Hey Rhubarb. I don't know about the televised bit, we don't have one. I think you mean the Coventry Uni study - that got some media coverage, but no, I'm talking about a US major study which for various reasons I'm going to be very vague about.

Hilary, you may not be on drugs but perhaps you should be

Hillary · 27/03/2007 22:54

Tinkerbelle you are so right

mishw · 27/03/2007 22:55

No advice really but thought I'd share my story.

Years ago I worked for a family whose DD1 used to wake several times a week screaming then by the time I got to her she's be talking to someone. In the end I made a deal with 'it'. I said that whenever I was on the nursery floor, I would talk to it, I would say good morning and good night once I'd put the kids to bed - everything went quiet - no more screaming abdabs, until one night I forgot to say goodnight but couldn't be bothered to go back up as I thought I was probably being really silly and yes she woke up that night - spooky or what. This wasn't a one off either - whenever I forgot to say goodnight she would wake up and if ever I was alone upstairs I'd often see a shadow out of the corner of my eye or a music box would start up by itself!

Anyway, I suppose what I'm really saying is try talking to him.

tinkerbellhadpiles · 27/03/2007 22:59

Mishw - I'd like to come clean on something. When I was 6 I would deliberately stare just beyond the aunt I didn't like and freak her out.

Not saying I doubt you but just that kids can be little wakeful sods without spiritual intervention!

mishw · 27/03/2007 23:29

Excellent - I wish I'd have thought of that as a kid!! The thing is this was in the middle of the night (I had to get up with the kids if they woke up - it was a 24hr job 5 days a week)

lulumama · 28/03/2007 10:06

LOL at reversing through a kid in a tank top!

rhubs..tommy tiernan...not getting it, he looks like a stjoooodent !

thanks all for sharing !

OP posts:
Hillary · 28/03/2007 13:19

You didn't see him looking at you eyeball to eyeball!!! It was a red and black tank top with a white shirt underneath......, my mum was in the car on that occasion, its the knees which get me, bloody annoying at times

lulumama · 28/03/2007 13:22

eyeball to eyeball! noooooooooo

Aquababe · 28/03/2007 13:37

I happen to know someone who does 'exorcisms', but he lives in Edinburgh and I don't know if that is near you. From what I re-call he comes to your house and says mass and a few small prayers and that seems to work. He told me some phrases to say if I ever saw a bad spirit but I forget them. hopefully I'll magically remember should the case arise.

expatinscotland · 28/03/2007 13:43

Well, I'm 'attuned' to this sort of thing. If it's bothering you, then by all means look to your local paranormal society to see what they can suggest.

In our case, I felt that the presence was trapped and sad and needed to move on, so it was easy to do.

Most 'hauntings' are residual. There's no real spirit, just a playback of events that happened.
