Help - how to explain to the four year old where Jesus is!
And also that Grandma J etc are not that likely to come back after they have gone to heaven, even though Jesus did.
And also how old is Jesus...

originalmavis · 06/12/2016 19:19

And i've never really understood where the holy ghost comes into it all!

Surely Jesus is 2016 years old?

BlackeyedSusan · 06/12/2016 19:33

Jesus is older than the world as he lived before the world was made

originalmavis · 06/12/2016 19:34

So when he was born in Bethlehem he was a reincarnation?

drspouse · 06/12/2016 20:36

Or is he still 33 as he isn't aging?

originalmavis · 06/12/2016 20:42

But time never began didn't it? Or so my primary school teacher tried to tell us until she gave up.

BlackeyedSusan · 06/12/2016 23:18

welllllll.... the simplified theology for ks1 children....

before the world was created, God existed as three in one... Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (bit like ice, water and watervapour are all H2O but not the same) nicked that off our vicar

They created the earth/universe/time etc... (Bible tells us who but not how. the 7 days is a picture of ordered creation)

They made everything to be good and people to be very good. People could have a relationship with God because they had not disobeyed. People chose to disobey and try to be like God. The penalty of this disobedience is eternal separation from God. (like kids having to go into time out) God is so Holy that nothing sinful can be near him and live. This is shown as no-one could go into the Holiest place in the temple where God lived, except the most important priest, and he could only go in once per year to take a temporary payment for sin. he had to have a rope tied to his ankle in case he died when he was in there and then the other priests could pull him out. All through the Old testament God is revealing himself to people and showing pictures of how serious sin is, how serious disobedience is and gives a temporary solution to sin, to cover it up.

People could not sort the sin for themselves so God came, in human form (jesus/bethlehem) to pay for the sin himself. The payment is death. Jesus was separated from his Father when he died. (did time out for us instead) The temple curtain was ripped in two from top to bottom to show that the most holy place was now somewhere where we can go because God has paid for the sin. (Jesus/Easter story etc)

Jesus defeated death by coming back to life. He has now gone to live with his father in heaven. (we still die but those who choose to follow him will go to live with him when they die)

The payment for sin is backdated for all time for those who chose to follow God before Jesus died and is still for people today if they choose to follow God.

BlackeyedSusan · 06/12/2016 23:25

The holy Ghost/Holy spirit.

He is part of the trinity. Equal with God the Father and God the Son. Has always been there with them. (co-eternal)

His job is to show us God the father and God the son and to help us follow God. It is The Holy Spirit that lives with us and is a guarantee of our life with God when we die.

Oh boy... it's so late... I've read and am praying for you all, but am going to post and run (to my bed) now. More tomorrow.

Here's a prayer from the Northumbria community's compline for Tuesday:

O God of life, this night,
O darken not to me Thy light.
O God of life, this night,
close not Thy gladness to my sight.
O God of life, this night,
Thy door to me, O shut not tight,
O God of life, this night. Amen

Im so sorry to hear Thomas died, Carrie. Praying for Han and all the family and for you. It's such a difficult time of year too. Flowers

Welcome originalmavis and lumpy.

Orchid, praying things go better today with dh. It sounds really tough.

Continuing to pray for you Sparky Flowers

Bes, praying that ds will get on well on the trip and feel calm.

Bes did a great job of explaining the holy spirit:-) the bible makes clear that the father, Jesus and the spirit were there before creation (the earth was timeless and void and the spirit of God hovered over the waters; in the beginning was the Word etc) - so God was and is always separate from time. It's mind blowing really!

It's hard to explain to a small child about Jesus being ageless, you can show something similar by talking about how they are separate from any worlds they create (eg happy land, lego etc) , they do not live within the constraints of that world but it's certainly not a perfect example as it brings up questions of control etc.

I think keep it simple and remember children don't have to understand everything and often accept things in their own way which is often far more faith filled than us adults! Say that Jesus, the father and spirit are all God, different parts like BES' analogy, and they have different ways to help us. Jesus saved us and is now with God but told his disciples he left the spirit as a comforter. To a child this can be a simple and lovely thing - that God loves them so much he wants them to feel happy inside and the HS helps them, and also helps them see what is not right (conscience) - so reminds them if they are not being kind or whatever.

When a child asks how old Jesus is, I'd say he doesn't have an age because he is all around, always has been and always will be and loves you very much.

It's hard though- but children often seem to get it regardless of what we say!!

CocoaX · 07/12/2016 09:56

Carrie, I am sorry to hear that Thomas died. I am praying that he may rest in peace, and also praying for his family as they grieve his loss, and for you and his other friends.

Orchid, thinking of you and praying that there is calm in your household. I am sorry that things are tough again.

Otherwise, I add my prayers quickly for all, I am exhausted. I look forward to catching up with the thread later.

make known your heavenly glory;
