Atheists and Accountability

Hi

My MIL is an athetist and I've had atheist friends in the past. They are the most morally corrupt people I've ever met.

People who believe in God or some form of higher being and an ultimate judgement day or reward (even through reincarnation) live by a certain set of rules e.g. 10 commandments. In a way it makes you aware of a higher being or that you will eventually be held accountible for your actions and should (in an ideal world) stop you doing bad things.

People like my MIL sleep around and do whatever they please regardless of who they hurt or how immoral the act is. As long as she's not breaking any laws of the land (and adultery is not one of them) she thinks it's fine to get away with it. Because she doesn't believe in God, she believes that she has in fact "got away with it".

What are your opinions on this? How do atheists enusre they don't do bad things? Whih set of rules/principles do you follow?

I stumble through like everyone else. I watch for opportunities to make things better. I imagine a religious person sees these opportunities as divinely provided, I just see them as opportunities, the fact that life is inherently unpredictable.

"Tinker, look up the meaning of the word bollocks, you'll find your name as the definition."

"Pruni-try growing up!!!"

But balamory, you imply in your OP that atheists are more immoral than people with a religious faith, due to lack of accountability to a supreme being. I'm not an atheist (am married to one, though ) but I too found your OP rather offensive. I also don't like the implication that people with a religious faith (like me) do the right thing not because they perceive it to be right and try to act with integrity (so, er, rather like atheists do... but with accountaibility to a higher power being part of that), but because they're scared of hellfire and brimstone.

Flack

do you believe in fate? Do you believe that things happen for a reason or that everything is just a random turn of events?

Monkeytrousers · 13/11/2006 19:28

Selfish idiots are not the preserve of atheism.

foundintranslation · 13/11/2006 19:28

Just seen your insults, balamory. Flipping heck. I'm off too.

FatThighs · 13/11/2006 19:29

Could you read what Balamory said in a different way - not in terms of all atheists but in terms of her MIL as an atheist. The they in here post refers the they her MIL and atheist friends, rather than they as atheists in general.

If so, I cannot comment on what moral code they (MIL and friends) adhere to or what you could say to them, just accept that they are not very nice people, but they are not the benchmark by which you should measure all atheists.

whatsthestoryinbalamorytoday · 13/11/2006 19:31

found in translation, unfortunately, as you've pointed out yourself, that is your assumption. That is not what I have written, but what you have wanted to see.

OP posts:
foundintranslation · 13/11/2006 19:32

It's the implication about atheists, though, FatThighs:
'My MIL is an atheist...'
'People who believe in God...'
'People like my MIL [ans the only thing we know about her is that she is an atheist]...'

foundintranslation · 13/11/2006 19:32

(Right, really am off)

whatsthestoryinbalamorytoday · 13/11/2006 19:32

Fatthighs

Thank you very much!!!!! That was exactly what I have written!!!!

TinkersBollocks · 13/11/2006 19:36

But FatThghs - just because her MIL sleeps around doesn't mean she might not be a nice person

yeah - I think I was trying to see it round in a different way and add a different voice to waht balamory said, but I think the insults that were posted are out of order. I crossed posts before that all came up and I wouldn't have tried to justify if I had read that first, I woul have stayed well away.

I don't think people who sleep around are nice but I was thinking along the lines of having a partner and sleeping around, if MIL is just sleeping around then no harm done in my opinion.

I am an atheist and I think about people's feelings and how my actions will effect them.... actually I am not getting involved.

But hey the God squad are just so perfect and the rest of us are inferior as we don't bend the knee to 'god.'
As my example shows there is more evil perpetuated in the name of religion than any other cause and your sheep like mentality that gives power to these people will continue till the end of time baa baa.

LittleSarah · 13/11/2006 20:07

I might be a troll but at least I'm not a incestuous paedophilic priest like you. You're wasting serious blow job time!!! Better get back to work!!!

My god! What did you write missymoosal!

Trinityrhino · 13/11/2006 20:11

this is the first OP that has got me raging,

I don't need some fucking imaginary weird guy to make me be good
I live be the 10 commandment sand would like to make them nothing to do with christianity and just to do with life
You are being totally unfair and rather rude about me and all other athiests and agnostiocs
Get off your high fecking horse and quit thinking you better tham us because you put all your faith in a frigging fairytale

whatsthestoryinbalamorytoday · 13/11/2006 20:11

The most hilarious thing is that you don't know that I even believe in God!!!!!

You're just making blind assumptions that I'm a follower of some sort!!!

OP posts:
missymoosal · 13/11/2006 20:16

Message deleted as I crossed the line by 'swearing' but hey balamory can continue to pedal his/her/it's brand of offensive s**t. and thinks it funny to make a joke about a family member who was sexually abused by a 'holy' man.
Balamory I so hope you get the life you deserve coz when you are dead you dead, worm food, and all the brown nosing to your 'god' will have been for nothing.

whatsthestoryinbalamorytoday · 13/11/2006 20:22
