A Christian prayer thread for Autumn/Winter

990 replies

Tuo · 30/10/2014 01:17

Welcome to our new prayer thread for autumn/winter. This is a safe and supportive place of prayer, where regulars, occasional visitors and lurkers, committed Christians and those just dipping a toe into the water are all equally welcome. Come and leave a prayer, tell us what's going on in your life, bring your worries, hopes, fears and joys to God, and know that you will be prayed for.

We pray, in particular, for...

... amberlight, for her work raising awareness of the ways in which we can work to make life easier for our autistic friends, and for her to know love and acceptance wherever she goes; also thanking God for her recent 'all-clear' at her annual cancer check-up;

... BlackEyedSusan, for all the many things which she has to juggle in her life as a single parent; in particular, for her DS to get adequate support so that he is less stressed at school; also for her DD and for her mum, and for BES to find the RL support that she needs;

... BlessedAssurance, for life with her two LOs, and for her family who are far away;

... DontstepontheMomeRaths, for her life as a single mum, for God to provide if her XH is successful in training for a new role, and for the wonderful work she does through her church supporting people going through separation and divorce;

... DutchOma, as she continues to miss Bob; thanking God for the wonderful support that she provides for so many on here; and praying for her relationship with her DD, in particular;

... Gingercurl, for her work situation; and for the relationship between her brother and sister to improve;

... howtoapproachthis for physical and emotional healing; and for a good bond between her and her DD;

... Kaykat, continuing to pray for her as she goes through the stressful and painful process of divorce; praying, in particular, that she is able to find good ways of supporting her DS, and for him to find renewed happiness in the coming weeks;

... MadHairDay, for her health; for peace of mind about the choice of secondary school for her DS; and for her DD to find friendship and acceptance;

... MrsPixieMoo, thanking God for her baby DD; and praying for a new home where the family can be really happy;

... Pipbin, for her IVF treatment - for her to find support and a positive way forward, whatever the outcome;

... PositiveAttitude, for her new studies and her work as a Deacon in her church; for her mum, who has dementia; and for her DD1 to find one or more special friends;

... PurplePidjin, for a more peaceful life;

... QuestionofFaith, for her and for her DH - for his depression to lift and for them to find ways to rebuild their lives;

... and for a poster we won't name but whose situation is known to God, praying that she is safe and supported.

We pray also for all regular and occasional visitors including: ALittleFaith, Badvoc, BlueTinkerbell, CharlotteCollins, cloutiedumpling, JugglingFromHereToThere, ktef, MaryBS, niminypiminy, PandaG, RoomForALittleOne, SEStheBrave, thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts, tunnocksteacake, weegiemum, and for anyone I've forgotten to name-check (don't take it personally, please!). And we pray for those who read and pray but don't post, for those who need our prayers but are afraid or too uncertain to post them, and for all those known to us in our own lives who need God's love.

Keep Your people, Lord,
in the arms of Your embrace.
Shelter them under Your wings.
Be their light in darkness.
Be their hope in distress.
Be their calm in anxiety.
Be strength in their weakness.
Be their comfort in pain.
Be their song in the night. Amen

i think they heard you he's quiet now Wink

PurplePidjin · 03/11/2014 22:55

and if it's going to attract baddies i shall place the hot chocolate at the end of the garden - i was hoping to make the angel feel welcome in my home if not ds's actual bedroom Grin

ZingOfSeven · 03/11/2014 23:57

purple

when DS1 was about 4 or 5 he had s bad nightmare, woke up crying and was so scared he didn't dare get out of bed so he did not to go to our bedroom, but cried until i went to him.poor boy.Sad
the next morning I explained that mummy is the same sometimes (it's true), but if it's that scary I pray to Jesus to help me feel peaceful and he will get rid if bad feelings and nightmares.

the following night seemed uneventful and the morning after that DS1 said that he had a nightmare but remembered to pray.
"and Mummy, you know what happened? Jesus came and slept in the top bunk and then I wasn't scared anymore!"

lovely lovely lovelySmile

That is a very dear story Zing.
I pray for all our children that they will know they are watched by their 'angels in heaven' (Matt 18:10) and feel comforted.

ZingOfSeven · 04/11/2014 12:45

Angels in Heaven and on Earth, definitely.

We met DS1's guardian angel when he was just 3 months old.

blackeyedsusie · 04/11/2014 13:23

I am having a panic about stuff that needs to be done.

ZingOfSeven · 04/11/2014 15:28

breathe breathe breathe susie

PurplePidjin · 04/11/2014 15:33

make a To Do list. write "Make a To Do list" at the top so you can cross an item off immediately and feel like you've achieved something Wink

ZingOfSeven · 04/11/2014 15:50

lists are my friends!

if in a panic try and identify the one thing that is top priority and ignore the rest.
tell yourself :" right now this is what I have to do.

if you are actually having a panic attack start counting. count to 7 while breathing in, then count to 11 while breathing out. ignore all other thoughts until your breathing is under control
it works.

blackeyedsusie · 04/11/2014 20:28

managed top get it under a bit of control by breathing. I checked the date I had to respond to a letter and it was ok to leave til tomorrow and then decided that I was probably due a day off! (not that massive traffic jam and running round the corner to school at the last minute then having a panic about an appointment that I was sure was cancelled and ex thought may not be....while out shopping... then arriving home to check the cancellation letter...

grr...

I have been googling bunk beds. we are a little stuck as several are too wide and the room is about two inches too short.

ZingOfSeven · 04/11/2014 20:59

blackeyedsusie

I had to have counselling for anxiety and panic attacks (throw in hyperventilating) it was very very useful.
that's where I learnt about the 7/11 breathing technique.

I also completely unexpectedly figured out that I had a massive issue with time managementShock
it was one of those lightbulb moments. I'm much more organised now, but still have a pre-panic attack every now and then (rarely it will still become a full blown thing).
it would be much worse if I didn't know why they happen or how to deal with them.

if you suffer from panic attacks, anxiety, insomnia it would probably worth talking to GP and get a referral.
I hope you don't mind me suggesting.

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 04/11/2014 22:39

My kids bunk beds are a rather odd shape. They were my mine, when I was a child. I slept in them with my twin brother. They're slimmer than a normal single and shorter. Not very helpful really. But I hope you find something that works for you.

Zing I'm loving all your posts on here today. So lovely and wise too!

Off to bed. Shattered.

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 04/11/2014 22:39

I love lists! Especially at work!

Dutchoma · 05/11/2014 00:22

I'm almost as late as TUO with my daily prayers. I've been out to Lodon to see the poppies and then to a concert tonight, really nice. And home just before midnight.

So following on from last night there re two more verses from the same prayer as yesterday, together with prayers for a peaceful night for us all.

O Christ, Son of the living God,
may Your holy angels guard our sleep,
may they watch over us as we rest
and hover around our beds.

Let them reveal to us in our dreams
visions of Your glorious truth,
O High Prince of the universe,
O High Priest of the mysteries.

May no dreams disturb our rest
and no nightmares darken our dreams.
May no fears or worries delay
our willing, prompt repose.

HardyLeodicean · 05/11/2014 03:53

New person here - hello . I hope you don't mind me joining .

Do not have such poetic prayers but these cliched but I think valid lines are helping me through a difficult time (actually not AA related which I know they have become associated with ) (I know it is not a proper prayer)

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.

Thank you all for this thread , I have only just found it but feel the better for it. I am a bit wobbly of faith but a good friend of mine said , just stick at it . So I am trying to . Whether it is faith or something else , reading through this thread has made me feel better.

Thank you

Hello hardy!

Lovely to see another new face on here x

blackeyedsusie · 05/11/2014 07:27

Morning.

welcome hardy.

MrsPixieMoo · 05/11/2014 07:59

Morning everyone

We have good news. We have our finances in order for the house. We are looking and in a position to buy which has happened very quickly in a time of great uncertainty.

Please continue to pray for us as we look for a home. Our family has had lots of instability and we would love to make a happy, permanent home together.

Questionoffaith · 05/11/2014 08:13

morning. good news Pixie! Praying for a home and a period of stability and peace. Oma - poppies and concert in London sounds lovely. Really want to go to see the poppies as well.
Zing how lovely re guardian angel - can I ask how it happened (nosey emoticon)?
Hardy welcome and I also use that prayer a lot! I love the rest of it too
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.

ZingOfSeven · 05/11/2014 11:51

dontstep & Oma

thank you! glad you liked my posts!Smile

question

let me think about it, I'm not sure if I'm ready to share.
it was a bit of a scary situation.
but I don't mind you ask, I'd be wanting to know too!Smile

I love stories about angels.

there's a really lovely, moving & encouraging book called "Angels" by Price Hope. I highly recommend it. it will warm your heart.

Questionoffaith · 05/11/2014 19:58

Don't worry re sharing it Zing. I was being very nosey Grin.

Feelinglostandalone · 05/11/2014 20:09

Hi all,

Have stumbled across this thread and wanted to join in. Thanks to all who've posted in this thread, it really does help reading through.

Is it weird to ask for prayers to help me pray? I feel like my relationship with God has gone downhill lately. I feel like I just can't really connect with Him even though deep down I know He is always here. I find it difficult to fully focus in prayer and feel bad as there are so many people I'd like to pray for. My mental health has gone downhill recently and I feel like that's contributing to my inability to pray.

Head fuzzy today as forgot my anti depressant so hopefully I'll feel better and more able to contribute to the thread tomorrow.

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 05/11/2014 22:09

No not weird feeling Many of us have gone through times of struggling to pray. These verses always bring me comfort when I struggle to pray:

Romans 8:25-27 (NIV)

But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

Questionoffaith · 05/11/2014 22:13

Hi Feeling and welcome. I would just say you are not alone, I think most of us go through times where prayer seems hard, when we can't focus and God feels distant. Have you ever read Philip Yanceys book on prayer? Reading that helped me a lot, especially helped me not to feel like a failure when I couldn't concentrate for more than 30 seconds on a prayer. And I am sure God is fine with the fact that sometimes all we can manage is a "Lord help me and bless all my loved ones" one sentence prayer as he knows what's in our hearts and minds and the burdens we are carrying. Hope you feel a bit better tomorrow when you take your AD and sleep well.

Dutchoma · 05/11/2014 22:40

Hallo Feeling and welcome. These feelings of being unable to pray are very common to all of us. Rest in the Lord for a little while and rest in the assurance that we on thisthread are praying for you. Let God take care of you for a little while and just rest.

I am posting a very short prayer from the Wednesday Compline service, one that TUO also posts from time to time.

The peace of all peace
be mine this night

  • in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
