"Matthew contains 606 of Markâ??s 661 verses. Luke contains 320 of Markâ??s 661 verses. Of the 55 verses of Mark which Matthew does not reproduce, Luke reproduces 31; therefore there are only 24 verses in all of Mark not reproduced somewhere in Matthew or Luke."

A good diagram here

The problem I can see, right away, deep is you're taking quotations out of context.

For example in Titus, what is being spoken about is people take more notice of commandments of men and fables than the truth.

Titus 1:10-15
King James Version (KJV)
10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:

11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, the Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.

13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

1 Corinthians 14 talks is in the context of unlearned people walking into church and encountering something that looked too chaotic to learn anything valid,

"23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?"

Paul is talking about services being orderly, as talking is tongues is permitted but for everyone to talk in tongues in church at once, is just not appropriate, in the same vein it was not deemed appropriate, at the time, for the women to be speaking over what is being preached. On reading this chapter, to me, it seemed Paul was speaking from experience of what was happening in certain churches.

Matthew 10:28
King James Version (KJV)
28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

This is talking about not fearing death, but rather fearing that which would cause a person to lose their soul to hell.

John 15:6
King James Version (KJV)
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

The analogy is made between life and a gardener looking after a vine. The vine represents Jesus and the gardener God. This essentially represents the message of the NT. We are saved through believing on Christ. Without Christ, we wither and die (spiritually speaking) and drop off the tree. Hell could be described as being apart from Jesus, God. Burning, the suffering this causes.

Ephesians 5:25
King James Version (KJV)
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Don't forget this bit, deep. Not looking so bad now, the husband should love his wife so much he should be prepared to die to save her.

I'm not quite sure Paul's motivations were exactly in 1 Timothy, women learning in silence and not teaching.

I take this as a comment on how woman were still viewed in society at the time. The enmity between men and women was, and is still apparent in lots of places. I am not surprised men would not listen to a woman teach them, or deal very well with a woman question teaching. The aim was to spread the Gospel first and foremost.

However we are also described as all been equal in Christ.

I also think about educational theory, how much of 'teaching' is enabling learning to take place, rather than formal teaching. Wink

Colossians 3:22
King James Version (KJV)
22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God;

The King James Version reads slightly differently to me, deep. It is talking about doing what an employer pays you for, but not hypocritically(eye service) but honestly, according to a right conscience (fearing God). IMO this is talking about having integrity.

In Romans Paul talks about some members Roman church behaving in lust, not love, in anyway,

Romans 1:18
King James Version (KJV)
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

Romans 1:29
King James Version (KJV)
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers

but accusing others, when they are guilty of the same thing

Romans 2:1-2
King James Version (KJV)
2 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.

It is a warning against hypocrisy.

Now I am sure there is much, much more that can be learnt from these passages. However my point is, things should not be taken out of context.

ShippingForecast · 28/04/2014 21:31

"However my point is, things should not be taken out of context."

But whilst we can have a guess at their context, we weren't there and don't really know.

capsium · 28/04/2014 21:40

True Shipping, but you've more of a fighting chance, at understanding, if you read more than a couple on sentences in one go. At one point (Titus 1:12) deep even missed off the beginning, of the one sentence she quoted, changing the meaning considerably...

madhairday · 28/04/2014 21:49

I quite concede I may have not phrased things too well. On phone in hospital now so have no chance. Not embarrassed though. Surely it's ok to say some Christians explore in a more academic way and some don't but the vast majority are made aware of the context etc? X on fiddled but that may be meds

madhairday · 28/04/2014 21:50

Confused not X on fiddled ? bloody autocorrect

capsium · 28/04/2014 21:52

Hope you're feeling better soon madhair.

rabbitrisen · 28/04/2014 22:35

May God bless you madhairday.
