Just curious - how many muslims are on mumsnet?

Hello/Salaam,

I know mumsnet has a wide and diverse population and I tend to recognise some MN usernames as regulars. Just intrigued to know how big/small a community it may be.

Of course, I respect that there may be those who do not wish to even identify themselves for various reasons - which is fine too.

I am not asking for 'religiousness' levels or any vital stats! Nor is this a muslim-only thread or an 'no non-muslims' thread.
If you really wish to tell me that you are not a muslim, that is fine too :)

:)

Nobody said you should modify your beliefs. Show me where I said it. I don't think I did. I just said some of your practices and beliefs verge on being "extreme" to non Muslims and some Muslims even.

fuzzywuzzy · 24/01/2013 17:02

Nailak wow those fb food pictures!

Jazakallah

And you crescentmoon.

I really love lamb. But was getting so bored with my own cooking.

peacefuloptimist · 24/01/2013 17:11

Phew. It's getting a bit heated in here. Shall we take the temperature down a notch by talking about less controversial things. I need some cheap, cheerful and halal ideas for what to do for my three year wedding anniversary. Was planning to book a surprise vacation to turkey for myself us but that has gone out the window cause my oh is working at the time. Any ideas ladies? [Grin]

sparklingsea · 24/01/2013 17:14

I hear what you are saying firefly, I certainly do not expect anyone to modify their beliefs. I am very interested in Islam and do my best to educate myself around the subject through my experience of living in a country where 98 percent of the population are Muslim. I go to a women's discussion group with women of varying degrees of strictness in terms of Islam and I have not come across some of the views expressed on here. My Turkish husband always says that he finds many of the Turks living in London and Germany more Turkish than the Turks in Turkey if that makes sense, could it be a similar thing with Muslims living in predominantly non Muslim countries?

peacefuloptimist · 24/01/2013 17:18

Grin I know what you mean fuzzywuzzy. I have refused to cook dinner today because I'm just sick of eating my own cooking. Does anyone else get that or is it just me. We are ordering takeaway today even though it's going to use up all my propoints. Oh well I deserve a treat. I lost 3 1/2 pounds today! Another gazillion left to lose.

fuzzywuzzy · 24/01/2013 17:19

Peaceful how about a romantic meal?

Or booking holiday for when you all can go?

peacefuloptimist · 24/01/2013 17:21

Well I didn't lose it in one day but over a week. Any other weightwatcher muslimahs out there?

fuzzywuzzy · 24/01/2013 17:22

I really get fed up of my own cooking.

A while ago a friend made me a meal, she kept apologising as apparently it was very basic. I felt so pampered & would have frankly loved it even if it were bra s on toast.

Someone cooking for you is the best.

fuzzywuzzy · 24/01/2013 17:24

Bras? Meant beans on toast am on iPhone !!!!

peacefuloptimist · 24/01/2013 17:26

I'm kind of over the whole romantic meal thing. It's not romantic for me if I have to cook it. I've changed my mind about the holiday with DH. Instead I think I might go with my mum and ds in the summer when I have my new toned bod. One of those halal resorts in Antalya, turkey. My mum absolutely loves the Turkish soaps. She watches them on Arabic tv. So I know she would be on cloud 9 if I took her to Turkey so she can bump in to Muhannad and show off to her friends

Cote do you watch the Turkish soaps? I had a friend from uni who used to go back to her parents house (she's married) once a week just to watch the next episode in a series.

peacefuloptimist · 24/01/2013 17:37

A friend at uni who was from Turkey. Her dad loved Ataturk too.

nailak · 24/01/2013 17:41

hehe some of the food on that page is mine lol

fuzzywuzzy · 24/01/2013 18:16

right, so I've got the best idea for a meet up, we all just turn up at sis Nailak's and eat her cooking...... can anyone tell I'm seriously sulky at having to cook tonight.

nailak · 24/01/2013 18:28

you wont fit in my house sis! lol and its a state!

fuzzywuzzy · 24/01/2013 18:41

My friend says that, so we have a deal, she cooks for me, I do the housework.

For some reason tidying someone else's house is fun, whereas doing my own house is a blooming chore....I know I will now get invitations to clean people's houses Hmm

firefly11 · 24/01/2013 19:07

sparklingsea I have seen that for myself from a racial aspect - finding that some of the British born Chinese people I've met here are more traditionally Chinese in their mindset compared to Singaporean born Chinese people. My own opinion of why this is so is that perhaps a British-born Chinese feels the need to reinforce their "Chinese-ness" in a country where Chinese people are in the small minority. Whereas a Singaporean-born Chinese person doesn't feel the need to retain traditional aspects of the culture as much, because Singapore is by and by, a (ethnically) Chinese majority country. I don't know if this is the same sort of reasoning extended to religion and if it explains why there are more extreme types of Muslims here. Maybe it is... but then again, I find it hard to understand. Religion is not race. But yet in this instance, it's almost like race? I don't know if I'm making much sense... :-)

WaynettaSlobsLover · 24/01/2013 20:16

im getting a bit bored of the 'extreme' label that being swept thickly over some muslims, perhaps us on here included. Hmm Extremism stems from a strict/narrow minded interpretation of religious rulings, and unfortunately leads to some individuals committing heinous crimes and severe oppression and misogony. I really dont see how choosing to follow a standard Islamic teaching regarding pictures and music affects anyone personally, nor makes anyone an 'extremist'. I've seen extremism from people and in its true form, it makes other people's lives difficult and gives the religion a bad name. If my friends decide to listen to music or have photos up, that's their business and I think that's fine.

fuzzywuzzy · 24/01/2013 20:28

Here here Waynetta.

I find it interesting that its ok to label my chiices extreme, when in fact I would not and do not even dream of imposing my views and beliefs on anyone.

I'm muddling thro life the best I can, always find it slightly bemusing to be called extremist. And it only happens with people who have never met me.

All my non muslim friends/work colleagues, are quite the most lovely people I could hope to have in my life.

I actually can't see any controversy here, some of us choose not to listen to music, which amongst us muslim mnetters is fine.
It's poeple who want nothing to do with Islam (and thats perfectly fine) getting all foamed at the mouth that errmmm I don't want to listen to music.

And I'm extreme.

Okaaaaay.
