Just curious - how many muslims are on mumsnet?

Hello/Salaam,

I know mumsnet has a wide and diverse population and I tend to recognise some MN usernames as regulars. Just intrigued to know how big/small a community it may be.

Of course, I respect that there may be those who do not wish to even identify themselves for various reasons - which is fine too.

I am not asking for 'religiousness' levels or any vital stats! Nor is this a muslim-only thread or an 'no non-muslims' thread.
If you really wish to tell me that you are not a muslim, that is fine too :)

:)

I'm in East London too.

I thought those pictures were either old or photoshopped or something.

It's actually snowing in Madina? Wow!

I hope the locals are OK, I don't think they expect that kind of weather and the poorer ones must be freezing.

fuzzywuzzy · 14/01/2013 22:12

Waynetta, I'm a bit scared to ask...what's snail pate? (too scared to google).

CoteDAzur · 14/01/2013 22:13

Yes, nailak, I'll be happy to get you ladies a bottle of rosé on the beach. Just don't forget your bikinis Grin

nailak · 14/01/2013 22:38

yeah ill wear mine, just with an abayah on top :p

WaynettaSlobsLover · 14/01/2013 22:59

Snail pâté is cooked snail made into a spread and its yummy on crackers :). Sorry to gross anyone out. When I was in France some years ago we went to a snail farm and had it. Cote I shan't be forgetting my bikini, and my ten foot high windbeaters Grin ok weird question, we know Cote is Turkish, what's everyone else's background?

nailak · 14/01/2013 23:13

"Saudi champagne" Grin

We have a children's "champagne" down here that's served at kiddie parties. Sounds like your Saudi "champagne".

sparklingsea · 15/01/2013 08:41

Cote, am curious, do you come back to Turkey much? Would you ever live here again?

nailak · 15/01/2013 10:37

crescent, cant we do maida grill next to ELM, I have no idea how to get to stoke newington!

WaynettaSlobsLover · 15/01/2013 10:43

Omg maida!!!! Love Maida!! I am drooling for lamb curry and naan bread now

CoteDAzur · 15/01/2013 11:51

sparkling - I go back to Turkey for a long holiday in the summer and 1-2 other times during the year. Now that the kids are in school here, we are restricted with school holidays.

I would be happy to live there again, but DH has a mental block against learning Turkish (well, aside from the "Annecigim" and "Babacigim" he learned to woo my parents back when we were dating) so don't think it would work.

I don't think this is a good time to move to Turkey, anyway, for all the reasons we talked about further down on this thread Sad It's great to visit, though.

nailak · 15/01/2013 14:01

waynetta, you mean maida restaurant not maida grill innit? i meant the one in whitechapel next to lmc, but we can go maida restaurant and book the private rooms if you want.

WaynettaSlobsLover · 15/01/2013 15:23

Ooh ok now I'm not so sure, the maida I mean is in white chapel as far as I know..., and when we were there they kept bringing out steaming grilled meat on fire lol. It was delicious, but we found the parking a nightmare down the road it's on. Where's maida restaurant? And yes we should all meet up and book the private rooms inshallah

I'm on the iPad, but what's the Hadith about angels coming down to gatherings where Allahs name is mentioned? And excuse to meet up?

Waynette you must mean Maia grill, didn't know they did curry! They have rooms as well.

So me and waynetta are in, who else?

WaynettaSlobsLover · 15/01/2013 17:32

I really enjoyed it there. My sis in law took us there and it had already been recommended to me before by a friend. Sisters who wear niqab are comfortable there which is nice because of the private rooms where they can eat in peace. I'm still trying to build up my spice tolerance though

WaynettaSlobsLover · 15/01/2013 21:40

Crescent you sound like me lol, 7 is bedtime and no excuses!! I've decided to pull my son out of nursery as from today and will be trying to join some pre schooler groups as from now inshallah. Still got to iron dh's work shirt and eat something. Prayed Isha alhamdulilah so will try to get an early ish night! How's everyone else

nailak · 15/01/2013 22:17

y did you take him out sis? are there childrens centres near you?

WaynettaSlobsLover · 15/01/2013 23:13

Well tbh, it just hasn't worked out to be the right place for him and plus the staff weren't exactly impressed about parents who don't want their kids involved in Christmas celebrations etc. I know some Muslims do Xmas and birthdays but I don't agree with it so we don't. Anyway ds is just not really settled there so I'm thinking to just home educate and spend quality time with him until he starts school in Sept along with the birth of the baby inshallah. I'm actually trying to find groups near me but with little success :(. Until I have my drivers license it's going to be hard to get around out of the local atea

CoteDAzur · 16/01/2013 08:30

I understand no Christmas, but what seems to be the problem with birthdays?

I'd also like to hear everyone's answers to Waynetta's questions about your origins/nationalities. Let's have some answers, ladies Smile

WaynettaSlobsLover · 16/01/2013 10:03

Well Cote any celebration that has its roots in paganism such as birthdays, I stay away from for that reason. Also I don't really see the point of birthdays in the literal sense, receiving presents and recognition for being born/reaching another year towards death? Lol I think it's a bit weird. We do Eid in a big way so the kids don't miss out on anything in terms of exciting celebrations. Just got to make sure ds is tactful towards kids who believe in Santa when he starts school because I wouldn't want him to upset anyone.
