Just curious - how many muslims are on mumsnet?

Hello/Salaam,

I know mumsnet has a wide and diverse population and I tend to recognise some MN usernames as regulars. Just intrigued to know how big/small a community it may be.

Of course, I respect that there may be those who do not wish to even identify themselves for various reasons - which is fine too.

I am not asking for 'religiousness' levels or any vital stats! Nor is this a muslim-only thread or an 'no non-muslims' thread.
If you really wish to tell me that you are not a muslim, that is fine too :)

:)

Lol!!! Well now I'm even more intrigued crescent! I've never known celebrating the prophets birthday as anything other than bidah if I'm honest because of things I've read and what I've been taught by certain people of knowledge. How do we know that he wanted us to celebrate his birthday evidence wise as you've said? I don't know anyone and have never met anyone that does it so its all news to me.

CoteDAzur · 16/01/2013 11:48

If you are celebrating Mohammad's birthday, why would you not celebrate your children's?

I guess it's an interpretation then isn't it rather than a set celebration like Eid. I don't know, it's not something I'm too sure about so think I'll leave it. Does anyone else celebrate the prophet's birthday too?

The Prophet (saw) used to fast on Mondays and Thursdays

?The most beloved prayer to Allaah is the prayer of Dawood (peace be upon him), and the most beloved fasting to Allaah is the fasting of Dawood. He used to sleep half the night, stand in prayer for one-third of the night, and sleep for one-sixth, and he used to fast alternate days.? (al-Bukhaari, 1131; Muslim, 1159).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was asked about fasting on Mondays and Thursdays, and he said: ?Those are two days on which people?s deeds are shown to the Lord of the Worlds, and I want my deeds to be shown to Him when I am fasting.? (al-Nasaa?i, 2358; Ibn Maajah, 1740; Ahmad, 8161; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami?, 1583). He was asked about fasting on Mondays and he said, ?On that day I was born and on that day revelation came to me.? (Muslim, 1162).

The Prophet (saw) passed away on his birthday, so keep in mind any celebration would also be conducted the day of his passing.

From a personal perspective, it looks to me like the Prophet (saw) used to fast on his birthday and the day he first received revelation as an act of gratefulness to Allah, Allah said, 'All the deeds of Adam's sons (people) are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.'

I try to fast Mondays and thursdays, to make up the fasts I miss during Ramadan mostly, but also to follow sunnah (it's much easier in winter than summer tho!).

Also anyone else read of the current research being done on the health benefits of the alternate day diet? diet

I think for English language speakers it's really useful, I have a lot of revert friends and the naming thing is a big headache.

I chose my childrens names to ensure they were easy to say for English speakers.

with the fasting thing, I'm usually so busy at work, that during winter I dont even realise the time passing alhumdulillah.

nailak · 16/01/2013 16:26

a name is a name, as long as it has a good meaning i dont see the issue.

waynetta apparantly there is a big group of homeschooling sisters who meet up on thurs afternoons at a park in mile end, I am trying to get the address for you inshallah.

Sometimes the things we want or feel we need are withheld from us for good reason although we don't know why. Have a cup of sweet tea and a cuddle with dh. Xxxxxxxx

"The commemoration and celebration of it and what the sunni majority have always done."

That point can be disputed Crescent. Yasir Qadhi, a Western Islamic scholar, writes a brilliant treatsie on the Origins of Mawlid which shows it is definitely not something that was always done by the sunnis but actually started in the 5th/6th century of Islam. Mawlid (in the form that it is practiced today) was unknown to the early generations of Muslims certainly the four Imams who founded the four schools of thought of sunni jurisprudence (which would be considered the orthodoxy by some) did not practice it let alone hear of it. Have a read of the article by Yasir Qadhi which I have linked to below. There are three parts to it. Its make for interesting reading.
