Cool Choirs, Clappy Choruses, Cringy Coffee: Religion Chat Thread No 5

I thought seeing as our other thread has gone somewhere into the oblivion that is old MN pages, I would start us up again anew for a new term. This is a place for those who are Christians (and anyone who's not, we're not an exclusive little club) Grin to chat about life, theology, church, any other stuff and of course Graham Kendrick, as nickel would not forgive me if I forgot to mention him Grin

So all welcome, old and new, it would be fun to chat and chew over anything that comes to mind. Lurkers say hello!

Anyone got a nice juicy topic to get the ball rolling then? Or if not come say hi anyway and tell us how you are doing. :)

Well done MHD

Tuo · 20/01/2013 15:03

So glad you could get out MHD. And hope you weren't as cold as me and greenheart were.

I've thawed out now, greenheart, but it was particularly bad today. Perhaps it's just as well we're all squashed into the quire (nave closed for the refurb) - at least we keep one another warm!

Mary - I'd definitely wear 'Liberal' as a badge of honour!

The thread was the 'basic info about CofE' thread. What the poster was suggesting about the church upset me as much as anything... Hope it hasn't put the OP off!

Grin I won the Detroit battle! I found so many other gorgeous places to go instead, that DH conceded we'd have more fun NOT going there! I will be really good now and make sure that he has a lovely time in the other places I've found. Off to book a couple of nights in a log cabin now...! Grin

Tuo · 20/01/2013 15:10

Aha! I see you found the other thread, MHD. Thanks for your support.

MadHairDay · 20/01/2013 15:21

I can't help myself, Tuo Grin - hope the Op is ok too :)

Didn't get to church today - snow affected play so we hunkered down and chilled out. Well, I did a few washes and sorted them. That's about the limit of my relaxation!

Italiangreyhound · 20/01/2013 18:42

Hi, can I join you please?

I haven't posted much in this section. I used to be in the conception threads, then a bit of TV and of late adoption and even work! I am a Christian and sort of feel drawn to these threads after being on Munsnet for almost 3 years!

Dutchoma · 20/01/2013 20:26

Course you can Greyhound. I will leave it to Nickel to put you through your paces. Grin

Tuo · 20/01/2013 20:28

Hi ItalianGreyhound. Welcome! Tell us about yourself... I've seen you posting on a few threads in this section, so it's great that you've come to chat to us. Smile

Right... I've given up on that other thread now. People were trying to be helpful to the OP and it has been completely hijacked. I'm sticking to this thread and the prayer thread, where I feel safe!

Italiangreyhound · 20/01/2013 22:59

Thanks Tuo and Dutchoma.

I'm in my 40s, a mum to a DD aged 8. I work for a charity as an administrator part time. I go to a free church but have had most of my 30 year Christian life in the good old C of E. I am a charismatic evangelical who has tried to embrace the contemplative (I WANT to I am just too busy minded to sit still for long) and would like to embrace more of the liberal, without loosing my enthusiasm and love of the old choruses (NO offence to any liberals or contemplates at all). My biggest passion is human rights, and justice and care and love, and I hate bad things, and bad things happening, and so of course I am often very sad at this world!

I have lived abroad, studied Mandarin, I am creative and I love writing.

I am trying to lose weight and learn Taekwan-do, and my hubby, dd and I are trying to adopt a child into our family through domestic adoption.

Hope that is enough.... and not too much.... thanks.

thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts · 21/01/2013 07:36

Hi - I'm new here as well!

thanksamillion · 21/01/2013 08:44

Hello newbies and welcome Grin

Italiangreyhound · 21/01/2013 08:48

thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts - love your name.

MadHairDay · 21/01/2013 10:45

Hello Italian - welcome! Yay another charismatic type Grin I would also identify in that way plus embracing other forms of worship

Dutchoma · 21/01/2013 11:07

I think you are all doing very well on that 'other thread', but I'm afraid it is a wasted effort. What did Jesus say about pearls and swine? Just thinking Grin

niminypiminy · 21/01/2013 11:23

DO you are right, of course. It's like scratching a scab...

Btw, I promised ages ago that I would look out for choir days for you and I have been looking but none of the ones I have heard of have been in your direction. I did see a poster a come and sing day hosted by John Rutter in Cambridge of 9 February details here. Don't know if that would be possible for you to get to - it's still a long way from where you are ... Will keep on looking out though.

KayHarker · 21/01/2013 12:35

I've started a mammoth debate thread before now and it went reasonably ok, but it can be quite draining. Years ago now. I'm so not a debating person any more. Life is far, far too short.

Well, my food delivery arrived despite the snow so I'm happy.

I went to sleep last night listening to a Stuart Townend CD, does that qualify me as a charismatic? Grin

MadHairDay · 21/01/2013 12:48

That sounds quite a nice way of going to sleep, Kay :)

Dutchoma · 21/01/2013 14:20

There was a John Rutter one in Northampton before Christmas and I couldn't go. Cambridge is indeed a long way off, especially as I have no transport. Nice thought though.

Bluetinkerbell · 21/01/2013 17:21

Our new website has just gone live... Anyone want to have a peek and tell me what you think? website here

Dutchoma · 21/01/2013 17:34

Looks very nice, lots of variety in the pictures, but I wonder if the word 'catholic' might put people of, thinking it is a Roman Catholic church rather than an Anglican one. I had to look twice.

niminypiminy · 21/01/2013 17:52

Looks great it seems like a lovely church. The web site is clear and attractive I think the CofE logo was prominent enough to mean that it wouldn't be confusing -- and easy to find your way around, with lots of easy to locate links to your activities.

DO -- I'll keep on keeping my ear to the ground, as it were.

MadHairDay · 21/01/2013 17:59

It's a great website, Blue - lots of information, great sections eg on Children and youth and lots of up to date stuff :) I think saying it's anglo-catholic is fine, it says what it is and gives people a good idea of what the service might be like.

GinandJag · 21/01/2013 18:27

Hello - wondering if it is safe to post here? Looking for a hijack-free thread, lol

Dutchoma · 21/01/2013 18:29

You might be hijacked by either Graham Kendrick lovers or by organ lovers, but otherwise it is quite safe

MadHairDay · 21/01/2013 18:29

It's a safe place here Gin, welcome and join in :)
