the first one is nearly full.

Anyone welcome, it's basically a "what happened in church/spiritual life/anything else you want to chat about that's vaguely related (or not) to churchy stuff.

i was going to make a vid and upload DH playing War MArch of the Priests, but the recording he did was during his rehearsal and as i was playing it back to him he kept going "mucked up there... and there....and there... and there... etc"

madhairday · 23/02/2011 16:32

SH is lovely Baroque, you'll love it. Worked there for many years in the kids groups. It's got such a nice feel and awesome worship :) We go to new wine which is similar except in tents Grin

All excited for you now!

thejaffacakesareonme · 23/02/2011 17:46

I have a really stupid question - what is a canticle?

I feel really dim, but it is just a term that isn't familiar to me

lyra41 · 23/02/2011 17:46

glad you asked jaffa, i was wondering also.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 23/02/2011 17:53

it's a very very old type of hymn,

OP posts:
BaroqueAroundTheClock · 23/02/2011 17:56

well there are modern ones too, but they're things like the benedictus, te deum, and other "non metrical" (ie they're sung a bit like proper pslams should be) songs with words taen directly from the bible but not the Psalms.

OP posts:
BaroqueAroundTheClock · 23/02/2011 17:58

I used it on the last thread when trying to be witty to describe what the thread had turned into - and said it was Canticles. Charisma and Chat for Churchy types.

I'm thinking maybe Psalms, Praise and Prattle for Pious People for the next one Wink

OP posts:
lyra41 · 23/02/2011 18:02

love the alliteration baroque! p.s. do you like baroque music, or is that a stupid question?

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 23/02/2011 18:06

yes I do - by nature of the fact that I'm an organist -and JS Bach wrote an awful lot of organ music Grin

Am going to go and have a think of some others - the first 2 needs to be polar opposites of each other in the Christian worship spectrum (hence Canticles and Charisma - frequently 2 styles of music that are poles apart in terms of worhsip, and Psalms and "Praise" being separated by a long distance too Grin

thejaffacakesareonme · 23/02/2011 18:15

Thanks for the explanation. It's been bugging me for days and it is always nice to learn something new.

I've been thinking over the last few days how much I like this thread and the prayer thread too. Sometimes it seems as though there are a lot of divisions between different branches of the Christian faith and it is great to see so many people from different backgrounds coming together on these threads.

I haven't seen any posts from Oxo for a few weeks. DOes anyone know if she is OK?

madhairday · 23/02/2011 19:30

I was thinking that jaffa, I posted on the alpha thread but no word from her, hope she is OK.

Liking the Prattly Praise one too Baroque Grin

Oooh kids in bed, dh out at deanery synod (joy!), I feel it may be wine and chocolate o' clock for me Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 23/02/2011 19:32

PMSL MDH - I read your Prattly Praise as

Pratty Praise Grin

WisteriaWoman · 23/02/2011 19:54

Quick question -- how do you pray and when?
Not sure I'm doing it right.... is there a right way? I sort of babble whatever comes into my head and whenever. SOmehow it just seems a bit err random!

madhairday · 23/02/2011 21:31

heheh @ pratty praise Grin

WW, I really don't think there is a right way. What you do sounds good to me :) Nickel was saying further up the trhead that she doesn't have set times to sit and pray as such, but prays naturally through the day and also through singing (which I think is a fab form of prayer), some have 'prayer times', some prayer journals. Just do what is right for you. I have also found there are seasons. When my dc were very small I never got time to sit and have a 'quiet time', then I read 'The Practise of the presence of God' by Brother Lawrence and it revolutionised my thinking - basic premise is that if our lives are soaked in God they are already soaked in prayer, whatever we do is a form of prayer and we can be with God all through our days, whether talking actively to him or not, whether aware of his presence or not. I love that - the thought of gently walking with God.

Now the dc are a bit older and at school I do make time to sit and pray but that's just because I like to focus and journal etc, it works for me and helps me centre and take time out from busy life, but I always have that idea of practising the presence of God behind whatever I do. :)

nickelbabe · 24/02/2011 10:21

why do you always ask the questions I can answer when i've left?? Shock

(one example of)

canticales are my bag - most usually in church services these days, it's the Venite, Exultemus, Benedicte,Jubilate, Te Deum, the Mangificat and Nunc Dimittis, etc.

the Jubilate and Te Deum are done in morning prayer (matins) and Mag and Nunc done in Evensong.

The Jubilate comes from psalm 100:
O be joyful in the Lord all ye lands,
serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song.
Be ye sure that the lord he is good, it is he who hath made us and not we ourselves.
We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise.
Be thankful unto him and speak good of his name, for the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endureth from generation to generation.
the best setting to this is

they're all set out in the Book of Common prayer.

the magnificat is Mary's song, when the angel gabriel tells her she's going to have Jesus (mark1:46-55) - she says "my soul doth magnify the lord and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour, for he hath regarded his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth, all generatiosn shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is His name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed the strength of his arm, he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. he hath put down the mighty from their seat and hath upholded the humble and meek. he hath filled the hungry with good things and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel. As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed forever."

the Nunc Dimittis is when Jesus is presented to the temple and Simeon says:
"Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people. To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel."
Basically, he's saying - what the prophets said, has coem true, which means my life's work is done, I've seen what we have all been waiting for, and i'm ready to die now (he was a very, very old man)

nickelbabe · 24/02/2011 10:27

wisteria - sounds like you pray in a similar way to me!
However you do it, God's listening, and that's the important thing! Grin
don't forget, that he taught us a prayer through Jesus (the Lord's Prayer), so if you're worried you're not getting it right, just do that one - it's got everything you want in it!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/02/2011 10:39

just testing to see if I can reply to this thread - just tried to post on another one and it kept taking me back to main talk page

how odd Confused

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/02/2011 10:58

feeeling a bit fed up this morning, exH sent me a text telling me to "call me" (him). So I did, he's skint, can't afford to pay his bills, or his rent, can't have the kids this weekend, not sure when he can have/see them. It'll be 4 weeks this weekend since they last saw him Sad

Then the other 2 things - no-ones fault just bad luck really - friend was supposed to be coming over today with her DC, but her DD is being sick so they can't come, and another friend that I was hoping to go and meet-up with this week isn't well enough to travel either

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 24/02/2011 11:09

sorry. it sounds like he's trying to fob you off though. :(

sorry you're missing out on seeing your friends :(

will we do in replacment?

think of it as free time that you didn't think you'd have.
on the weekend, do a pyjama day on saturday with the kids.

madhairday · 24/02/2011 11:16

Baroque - that is the pits re exh. :(

Sorry about your friends too. Agree with nickel - take some chill out time.

MN just did that to me too re taking back to the talk page, v bizarre.

nickel like your descriptions of canticles etc, such lovely words. :)

Should be getting PD9 delivered today - yay! Should save it til next week when dc are at school but will I? Grin

nickelbabe · 24/02/2011 11:37

omg! can't believe you've had to wait so long! didn't you pre-order it??? Shock

you'll love it! i was sooooo confused to start with, but it's actually really easy once you've worked out what does what.
Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/02/2011 11:37

Thing is I do know that he is skint - there's no doubting that - just over 12 months ago I handed oer the monthly budget to him with the bills that he would have to pay once I moved out with the DS's.........it was WAY more than his JSA will cover. So I'm not doubting that side of things. Problem is that he didn't pay off bills before I bill out that he could have done (I know as although I'd given "his" bills to him - I was still very much in control of what money was coming into the house) and there's no doubt his spending priorities have been all wrong in the last 12 months.

I can't beleive he couldn't even find £6 to get the bus over here say on Saturday and take them to the park or something for a couple o hours - that would cost nothing - hell I'd even have given him the cash to take them to McDonald's for lunch. But he just doesn't seem to put them as a priority at all. They're a "disposable" piece of expenditure as far as he's concerned [sad

Where as mosdt other parents (RP like me, or NRP's) would walk over hot coals to put their children as important.

He sounded more upset that he could't pay his rent, or pay his bills than the fact he couldn't see his boys. Is so rubbish.

Am still going to take the DS's to the park this afternoon, but was looking forward to some "adult" inertaction this week - I really miss the school run >> during the holidays as it can mean that I don't speak to any oter adults at all Mon-Sat .

Going to go and shower and tidy up.

OP posts:
BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/02/2011 11:38

it is is easy once you get to work out what does what isn't it nickel

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 24/02/2011 11:42

i see what you mean, B, he's not got much money, but what he classes as must spends doesn't include the boys. can you buy him a bus pass, you now, one that you scratch off the times you use it? one that only covers his house to your house?
i know that'd mean you having to spend money, which isn't fair, but at least you know that he'll come to see his boys.
