Can all those who don't believe in homeopathy, ghosts, talking to the dead, reading minds etc, please check in here?

There must be a few of us.

I feel as though I've logged onto allthingswoo.com rather than Mumsnet.com at the moment, and I'm not referring to this particuarly forum, but chat and AIBU?.

And if anyone says anything about how we should be openminded,I'm afraid I'll have to beat you to death with a a stick, one cut from an ash tree by the light of the first Summer moon of course.

Woo!!! I LOVE it. The word/notion that is; I am pretty anti-woo really. But I have never heard it called that and am chuckling at this thread.

Can agree with (hating) all the things on the list thus far, but in particular, keen to add my scorn to detoxing (yes I do - with my liver, kidneys and washing...), and 'chemicals'.

Was a bit sick a while back (fine now). A thoughtful colleague gave me a pack of those things you stick to the bottom of your feet to remove toxins...erm, post chemo. WTF??? I did not use them so can conclusively state that they did not cure me!

I would join you, but unfortunately I drank some water that had a memory of strychnine so I'm currently dying in agony.

Seeker, oh no! Quick, do some past-life regression on said water and maybe it will remember a time before it was strychnine, perhaps when it was Cleopatra?

Nb I am washing this thread down with some lovely aspartame-ful Diet Coke.

LetThereBeRock · 04/02/2011 17:14

Having been sea sick before,Seth,I can fully understand how you could have thought you'd seen a ghost. I've never felt so ill in my life.

And yes I do believe that such things are the result of the brain playing tricks.
Such hallucinations, and the feeling that an unseen entity is present, have been reproduced in the lab under certain conditions, and the mind is designed to make sense of things. It sees faces and figures where there are only hollows and shadows.

Interesting, BeenBeta about the water divining. It is one of these things that some people do seem to be able to do. However I don't think it's magic or anything woo-like. I think there must be a real scientific explanation, but nobody has found it yet.

A bit like the fact that some herbal remedies work, because they have specific chemicals in the plant. (E.g. salicylates in willow, which are the active ingredient in aspirin).

NormanTheForeman · 04/02/2011 17:15

Yes, I think ghosts could well be hallucinations, just as people sometimes hallucinate when they have a fever etc.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 04/02/2011 17:17

I have used feverfew for migraines for years and consequently a lot of my friends have had me down as being into homeopathy etc. It's amazing how many people don't know the difference between herbal and homeopathic - as you see on here whenever arnica comes up....

LetThereBeRock · 04/02/2011 17:18

Never mind,Seeker.Perhaps you can rejoin us in your next life.

I can't stand all the hysteria about cigarettes

seeker · 04/02/2011 17:23

It's OK everyone - I found some more strychnine in the garden shed and that cured me.

TrillianAstra · 04/02/2011 17:25

Arnica is used both herbally and homeopathically, which is probably why there is confusion.

Arnica cream has actual ingredients in it.

Arnica tablets (homeopathic) do not. If they did, they would be poisonous.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 04/02/2011 17:26

did you have to take less of the second lot of strychnine than the first time, because less is more powerful than more?

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 04/02/2011 17:26

exactly Trillian.

TrillianAstra · 04/02/2011 17:28

Here's one for anyone TTC - less is more!

MinnieBar · 04/02/2011 17:28

Hurrah for this thread! I did look at the medium thread but found myself shouting 'FFS!' at the screen because of all the 'ah, BUT, she couldn't have known those details' comments.

It's just a matter of time before they look at active convos sense this thread and come over here squeaking saying 'please don't disrespect my beliefs.'

As Dawkins says, why the hell not?!

TrillianAstra · 04/02/2011 17:28

Beta if you can really divine water then there are some drought-sticken regions of the world that could do with your help.

LetThereBeRock · 04/02/2011 17:29

That's a relief Seeker.Grin I can't believe I didn't think of that,it's so obvious.

Hullygully · 04/02/2011 17:30

What is the thread's position on Reiki?

TrillianAstra · 04/02/2011 17:31

I don't think 'this thread' has a single position - I bet pretty soon we'll encounter something that one person considers woo and the other says is notwoo.

HerMajestiesSecretCervix · 04/02/2011 17:32

Stupid way to spell Ricky. Some people will do anything to give their kid an original name.

Lulie110 · 04/02/2011 17:32

Reiki?? I say WOO. Actually, I think the placebo effect makes the subject feel better.

Hullygully · 04/02/2011 17:32

What about past life regression?

That's real.

I was a goat in 15th century Umbria.

Hullygully · 04/02/2011 17:33

I don't think aspartamame is very nice. Or the other one whose name temporarily escapes me.

LetThereBeRock · 04/02/2011 17:34

I think we've already had a few examples of that,Trillian. Still it's nice to know that we're not alone,or are we?
