G'wan, you're dying to know, aren't you?

Ask me a question about them

OP posts:
sanfairyann · 03/06/2010 22:59

what colour are they?
are they squeaking yet?
seen them popcorning?
what kind of cage have they got?
when are they going out on the grass for a run round?

boogeek · 03/06/2010 23:01

What are their names?

Vallhala · 03/06/2010 23:06

WThell is popcorning?

And while I'm at it, I've been meaning to ask this for ages, not being rude and all that, but WThell is the appeal with these creatures?

I've yet to meet one which doesn't run a mile from me! Maybe it's because I'm a doggy person mainly (not adverse to small things, a cat owner and pet ferret owner too). I can see the appeal in rats, used to have them, take them out on the school run etc, but guinea pigs?

Nah, I don't get it. Why? What do they do?

Genuinely perplexed here!

Very interested in this thread. My daughter has worn me down for the last 12 months and now I have agreed to get a couple of guinea pigs in July when we get back from hols, interested to hear what they are like as pets. This is our first venture in to pet territory so a bit nervous of it all...

bibbitybobbityhat · 03/06/2010 23:14

Heh heh, Val. They are friendly little critters who make a sweet squeaking noise and they look terribly appealing.

So, anyways, we promised the two dc a guinea pig each. We bought the hutch and had it all set up a while ago.

There is a pet shop near my gym and I went in there to enquire about guinea pigs and they said they were getting two pairs of females in shortly.

So, the next time I went in, I saw the guinea pigs (vvv cute) but they had 3 not 4!!!

Someone had been in and bought one guinea pig along with a rabbit.

Leaving an odd number in the shop .

So, I took the two dc in today and asked them to choose their favourites out of the three. All the time we had heavy hearts because one little gp would be left behind...

bet you go back tomorrow and get it! I've got 4 girls living together very happily - the more the merrier.

Ha ha ha Sanfairy!

Do you really think we could leave that one gp in the shop (incidentally my favourite of the three)?

Fear not! she is cosily nestled here in the straw in her hutch with her hutch-mates (I'm not sure if they are sisters).

They are Nibbles, Peggy and Cookie.

We are sooooooooooo in love.

Dh has had a quick grumble and a mutter but I think he is enchanted too .

Huh! I saw heaps of the beggars in the pet shop when I went in there today to buy fish food.

They all ran away from me, not so much as a hello squeak!

Perhaps it's best I stick to dogs, cats and ferrets.

sanfairyann · 03/06/2010 23:24

awwwww now you've got one each! cute.

sanfairyann · 03/06/2010 23:25

that's cos they are discriminating valhala

mine run away too but they are cute when caught and like being chased

kid · 03/06/2010 23:32

I love guineapigs, they are cute, cuddly and make the cutest noises ever.

My DC's school had 2 and we always volunteered to have them during the school holidays. Our old dog wasn't too impressed but as he was deaf, their squeaking didn't bother him at all.

I thought someone was going to explain 'popcorning'. Guess I'll have to google it instead.

kid · 03/06/2010 23:34

ahhh, now I know what popcorning is!

SamJones · 04/06/2010 11:25

When I took my dd and ds to choose their gp's, I caved in pretty quickly and had to have one myself too but as we were choosing from 2 pairs of brothers that mean't leaving one behind.....so guess who now has FOUR gp's....

And popcorning is just the best!

bibbitybobbityhat · 04/06/2010 13:30

You are just as soft as me then SamJones!

The gps seem a bit shy atm but we are hoping to coax them out later. We have got a run for them on the grass and waiting for it to cool down a bit outside before we put them out.

Hopefully they will soon be popcorning away to their hearts content.

SamJones · 04/06/2010 14:35

Probably!

But I must admit I hadn't quite banked on having to then get another hutch and have a 'play in the run' rota because 2 of them fight so badly if they are allowed to mix.
We were told when we got them that as long as they grew up together then fighting amongst boys wasn't a problem, but that hasn't been our experience!

But the boys have a new love atm - runner beans...

SamJones · 04/06/2010 14:43

Are yours long or short haired?

sanfairyann · 04/06/2010 15:26

mine won't touch runner beans - thought they must be poisonous? maybe I'll try again. we have two sets of boys too and they have caused some nasty wounds when they've got into each other's runs in the past - who'd have thought something so cute and cuddly could be so vicious.

lisasimpson · 04/06/2010 17:52

They should have hay rather than straw though as they are closer to the ground and the sharp straw can damage their eyes

I love guinea pigs. Our two are so sweet that I even have my MN name named after one of ours, (Thistle).

I fought for a long time not to get them then caved in and we got 2 for my DD's 5th birthday. They are so lovely that I think I might have to always have them even when the DC's are all grown up. I will be the sad woman living with loads of cats and piggies, (possibly a bit smelly).

sharbieinbackofthequattro · 04/06/2010 23:53

aaaaaaaaaaah lovely - what colour are they??

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 05/06/2010 11:19

What does pop corning mean?

I have a boy and a girl and they are the funniest pets I have ever had.

MumInBeds · 05/06/2010 11:26

Popcorning is when they jump on the spot with excitement.

I have two girl piggies - Frisbee and Hula. I love them because they let me hold and stroke them and they don't bite.

jillhastwoponies · 05/06/2010 11:31

They are just the sweetest things. They sit on your lap and watch telly with you. They don't smell, but they do need letting out for a run every day. If you keep them inside they become tamer, but do get them a run for the garden.Like thistle, I think I will probably have them all my life.
