One of my cats has been killed on the road and another is missing :(

AT feding time one of my cats wasn't home so about 20 mins ago DH decided to go and look for him. He has a favourite spot in a quarry about 400 yards down te road.

DH went down and couldn't find him - on the way back he found one of our other cats Daisy dead on the road. SHe must have followed him and been hit by a car.

He is burying her now.

I can't believe it, she was a feral cat we rescued last year. Yesterday was the first time I stroked her. SHe was starting to look through the cat flap and we were hoping she would move into the house. She was such a character. Her sister is much shyer and is going to be lost without her - she only comes in to eat following Daisy.

Only this afternoon we were saying that althugh she was cheeky at least she had good road sense. DH thinks it may have been a JCB which passed him and confused her,

She adored DH and would follow him around the garedn. He is devastated, and blames himself because she fllowed him.

Really sorry to hear that. It's always sad when a pet dies, especially when it shouldn't have been their time.

Really hope your other cat finds its was home soon

Disenchanted3 · 01/06/2010 18:34

Shit

I'm so sorry

differentID · 01/06/2010 18:37

I am so sorry- it's horrifying when they go that way.
I've had 2 cats killed on the roads, both times, we were told it had been instant- just a small trickle of blood from the nose and no other visible injuries, which was a small mercy.

Don't be too hard on yoursleves, and I hope your wanderer makes it home safe and sound.

gibbberish · 01/06/2010 18:40

It's really awful when that happens. Our two cats were hit by cars and killed within a month of each other. The kids and me were devastated.

Really hope you find the other cat.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 01/06/2010 18:45

I can't believe it. She was only about 2 years old

DH says no more cats - we have lost 4 in 12 months. The other 3 were due to ill health or age but he says he can't bear it.

The wanderer has returned - ironically from completely the other direction so now DH is beating him self up and saying why didn't I go and look in that diretcion.

It must have been instant because he had walked that stretch of road less that 2 mins before. She must have been behind him, she was killed on a bend in the road so he didnt see what hapened.

I feel so sad because hse should have had years ahead of her. When we had ehr she was malnourished and scared, she had come such a long way and had the makings of a fabulous little house cat. AM very worried about her sister, I am afraid she will run away now because she only comes in to eat when D arrived - she hides in the hedge if she can;t see her.

We gave up having cats for that very reason. Have guinea pigs now - not quite the same but they are lovely little pets for the kids.

ClaireDeLoon · 01/06/2010 18:48

I'm very sorry

I'm so sorry to hear about Daisy. It's awful, isn't it. I hope the sister cat will be okay.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 01/06/2010 20:23

Thank you.

Her sister is now missing - we think she may be hiding or out looking for her.
DH managed to feed her and stroke her earlier, but she was very stressed (wouldn't come into the stable where they are fed, he had to take the food to her)
As soon as she had eaten she ran off into the field miaowing loudly.
She is such a nervous cat and relied on Daisy to lead the way.

I've been out looking for her but there is no sign. Usually, she comes to watch me when I am gardening so I have spent half an hour aimlessly hoeing but she didn't appear.

Hopefully she will come home when it gets dark.

Poor DH is still going through the 'what ifs' - I keep telling him it was just pure bad luck, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I feel so sad for you. Perhaps the other cat got a fright and is hiding somewhere.

oh thats so sad, hope the other one turns up. im sorry youve lost your moggie.

kid · 01/06/2010 20:33

Your poor DH, he is going to beat himself up about this for a long time. It really wasn't his fault though, he wasn't driving the vehicle that hit the cat.
Its so easy to say 'what if' but sadly that won't change things and won't help you deal with the tragic loss.

I don't know what to say to make either of you feel any better, words can't change the way you are feeling, but time will heal the pain. It could take days or weeks, you really just have to take it one day at a time.

I do know how you are feeling as I recently lost my healthy puppy. I am still devastated 5 days on, but already, each day feels easier.

ClaireDeLoon · 01/06/2010 20:34

They do say it is sometimes best to let the other cats sniff the body. Although of course you have buried her now. One of my cats was run over and I brought her body into the house and my oldest cat sniffed her. My other more nervy cat refused to come in the house and we took her to the vets to be cremated the next day before he came in and for a few days he kept looking under the furniture for her etc.

CarGirl · 01/06/2010 20:36

You poor poor thing, it sounds like you may have to get another cat to take on Daisy's role

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 01/06/2010 21:45

Thank you everyone - you've all been very kind.

The oddest thing has happened. A strange cat has turned up - a very thin little ginger cat - he (I'm assuming it is a boy) was inside the stable earlier and is now sitting in the hedge between the house and the field. I can't get near to him, when I went in to the stables he ran away (I thought it was my ginger boy first, but then I realised he was asleep in his bed)
We've put some food out for him - maybe he has just wandered from somewhere further afield and will disappear.

I have no idea who he belongs to, we are in a very rural area and I 'know' all the other cats in the few houses around here.

Dottie (Daisy's sister) has come home, she isn't happy but at least I know she is safe.

So sorry to hear this.

BelleDameSansMerci · 01/06/2010 21:51

So sorry about your poor little cat, and your poor DH.

Very strange about your new arrival.

kid · 01/06/2010 21:53

How strange that another cat has turned up?
Maybe it has been visiting for a while and you haven't noticed it before now?

Glad to hear Dottie is safe x

Sexonlegs · 01/06/2010 22:00

How heartbreaking

We have 2 rescue cats and it breaks my heart to think of life without them.

Hope you are both ok. xx

Vallhala · 01/06/2010 22:13

What a sad day for some of our MN members. I go on about dogs all the time but I'm a cat owner too and am very, very sorry to read of your tragic news. I do hope that Dottie will come to rely and trust in you more and more and that your new visitor brings you all comfort.
