Talk to me about Whippets, the good, bad and the ugly

Hi, I'm thinking of taking the plunge and getting our first dog EVER! I've always been a cat person and we live in the countryside and so many times I wish that I had a dog to take for walks.
Also, my daughters (aged 7 and 5) have been going on about getting one and I've always said no as I wanted to make sure they knew that dogs can't be teased like our poor little moggy.
So if any of you have Whippets, can you tell me all about them, even the bad bits.
Thank you

ooh did you see the weekend guardian, they had a whole section on dogs, including whippets, which they called the dogs for cat people
my dm has one which we look after occasionally. big soppy things.
love nothign better than curling up on the sofa, sleeping on your bed.
they can run very fast and can have injuries due to the running into things, barbed wire for instance.
but i would have one as well.

Yes the guardian article was great! I always wanted a greyhound, but I think it would be too big for our house.

Have a look at the LurcherLink website and email them for further advice. They occasionally have whippets/whippet crosses and regardless are always happy to help and give the benefit of their experience. Their forum has both dogs in need of homes or rescue and iirr a chat section. (Not sure of the latter as I just normally use the rescue bit and haven't even done that for a while).

Any queries, email Kaye, the owner, she's brilliant (a bit concise in email response, just her way, but not as scary as she comes across! I've spoken to her on the phone a few times and she's ace, really knows her stuff and friendly too).
