chirping like a bird????

Mine had a wide range of "vocab" are you sure it's a problem and not just an extension of their usual noises?

clayre · 09/03/2010 21:14

i dont know but one of mine do it too another purrs like the cat!

Dp heard it the other night and last night we were watching tv and the guineas were on the kitchen floor. We thought a bird had got in or something was wrong. One of the guineas was sat very still and chirping just like a bird.we have had them a couple of years now and never heard it before.Nothing was obviously wrong with her. When i googled it said it was rare but theories for it vary.I just wondered if anyone had any experience of this.

It's called wheeking I think?

CarGirl · 09/03/2010 22:59

was it their distress call?

fluffyguineapigs · 09/03/2010 23:20

Some piggies sing; sounds a lot like a bird. It is known in the piggy world but it's quite rare - it's known as the guinea pig song (honest!). I have had piggies for a long, long time but never heard it - but my mum heard one of my piggies do this when I was asleep.

It's usually associated with young males (although mine were female)and it usually has an electric effect on any other piggies nearby - they sort of freeze while the singing piggy seems tobe in a trance.

CarGirl · 09/03/2010 23:37

i want piggies again

Beauregard · 10/03/2010 19:45

Cargirl-No it wasnt the distress call

Fluffyguineapigs-Yeh i read that too about it being called the guinea pig song

I spoke to a lovely lady at the pet section at the garden centre today .I was buying the piggies a new cage. She knew a lot about guineas and has kept them a long time and she said the chirping(which is rare)is the guinea calling for a mate.So she must be broody

But baby piggies are so lovely and sweet and the mummy piggies were always happy for me to have them all on my lap for a cuddle on mass.

Beauregard · 10/03/2010 21:55

They are rather cute i agree but have no room for anymore guineas.Ours are rather large(hence buying the new cage today).

How can you deny a broody female, tis piggie cruelty. Sell babies????

fluffyguineapigs · 10/03/2010 23:28

Ooh that is interesting about being calling for a mate. How sweet!

We had a piggy bereavement last week, so sad. Feeling broody anyway but broody for another piggy. Baby or piggy, baby or piggy...

eyesdown · 10/03/2010 23:33

fluffyguineapigs · 11/03/2010 17:30
