Is there anyway to change a Dogs 'KC' name?

Our breeder was lovely, she helped us so much and was very pre=ofessional but she gave our pups really bad Kennel Names!

Now we are the registered owners is there anyway to change them?

sorry just found it myself after searching for a while, you can but it costs £30 each.

this is like any baby name thread, can't pass comment until you confess what the name is!

minimu · 18/02/2010 15:48

go on tell us the names.......I have had some bad ones in my time.

midori1999 · 18/02/2010 15:50

You can't change the name without the breeders permission and you can't remove the affix either. Does it really matter? Unless you're showing you'll never need to yuse the KC name.

Personally, I probably wouldn't agree to a name change, but I do usually give puppy owners a choice of names once I have registered the litter. It is quite hard to find suitable names for puppies that the kennel club will allow. They have to be under 22 leetter, inlcuding the affix, and you cannot have any name that has either been taken or sounds liek a taken name, even if the affix is different. it is the bane of my life registering litters!

Go on then, what are the names?

Bella32 · 18/02/2010 15:55

Can't see the point, tbh.

Iklboo · 18/02/2010 15:57

It's not wormbum crotchsniffer or legshaggerchildbiter is it?

morethanyoubargainfor · 18/02/2010 15:58

My curly lad's KC is fairly hidieous but it does suit him IYKWIM, it is good that we NEVER have to use but it does make me smile because it is so him .

I equally can't see thepoint in changing it.

Bella32 · 18/02/2010 16:01

You can add your own suffix, can't you?

Madbreeder's RabidPug at Disenchanted.

Kind of catchy.

minimu · 18/02/2010 16:41

I love legshaggerchildbiter!

One of mine has a mad KC name and of course it is the only dog that regularly gets placed at KC agility shows! They insist on using the KC name so big when I go to collect the rosette.

Especially as dogs that do KC agility that are not pedigree are listed on the activity register and they all have fab witty names so he stands out even more as being very geeky! Bless him.

Disenchanted3 · 18/02/2010 16:48

lol , no just boring 'normal' names.

Does anyone here have breeders insurance?

OP posts:
midori1999 · 18/02/2010 16:52

What do you mean by 'breeders insurance'? Insurance given by the breeder with the puppy, ro insurance specifically for breeders of dogs?

And stop being a spoil sport and tell us the names...

One of my odlest girls relatvies is called 'Affix Golden Rainfalls' It makes me snigger all the time... Maybe I am just childish...

Disenchanted3 · 18/02/2010 16:54

Poppy-Pearl and Millie-mae.

I mean pregnancy isn't covered under regular pet insurance is it? So do people get breeders insurance?

OP posts:
minimu · 18/02/2010 16:54

lol at golden rainfalls- love it!

midori1999 · 18/02/2010 17:06

Are you planning to breed then? (nosey...)

No, pregnancy and whelping isn't covered under normal insurance. Insurance for breeding is quite hard to get, although I believe the KC now do a policy. I don't know anyone who insures for breeding. It all costs so much money and there are so many 'what ifs' that you really need access to either quite a lot of money or a credit card with a high limit you don't mind using in order to be responsible.

For example, my friend's bitch whelped no problems, but at three weeks she discovered one of the pups had a congenital problem. She didn't want to have the pup put to sleep (and rightly so) as the problem was treatable, but it meant keeping the puppy (as well as the one she wanted to keep) for 9 months and paying for tests and then surgery for the pup, which cost her almost £3000. From what I can gather, breeders insurance wouldn't cover that but only problems witht he actual bitch during pregnancy and whelping.

And yes, the names are a bit uninventive, maybe the breeder had given up the will to live by the time she got to those names, after millions had been rejected?!

Disenchanted3 · 18/02/2010 17:13

Yes I've just found out buy googling its quite hard to get!

Yes I am going to breed them, I was undecided up untill recently, my friend (whose mother has bred dogs for decades) started to breed. I got into contact with her and she has been chatting to me about it for a while now.

I was worried about being a complete novice but now I have her to help me through.

OP posts:
Disenchanted3 · 18/02/2010 17:36

I mean between now and then we can save enough to cover c-sections and such but ti would be alot easier to just pay x amount of insuance and be covered for one!

OP posts:
Bella32 · 18/02/2010 17:55

Why do you want to breed them, Dis?

midori1999 · 18/02/2010 17:56

Have they got endorsements on their pedigree? What breed are they> (again, nosey... )

It is much easier if you have someone experienced to help you.

CurlyCasper · 18/02/2010 18:06

You can get all sorts of help and advice if you speak to members of your breed's regional/national club. I wouldn't worry too much about KC names TBH, especially when first starting out. If you do, you'll start cringing at all the many names on the pups' pedigrees. To put your own stamp on them, get your own kennel name and add it as a suffix to the existing dogs names, and make it the affix for all the pups.

we had some right horrendous names, but by the time you've gone through the process for several litters, you might realise that what you've got now isn't too bad at all!

Disenchanted3 · 18/02/2010 18:56

Thanks curly, have been lookig into that and think its probably something we will do, we will probably keep the names they have now, silly to spend £60 on a name they don't use that often!

No there are no endorsements on their pedigrees, and they are pugs.

OP posts:
midori1999 · 18/02/2010 19:09

I have to say, despite being experienced, Pugs are not a breed I would want to whelp. They have notoriously difficult births and are well known to be terrible mothers, ignoring or even killing their puppies.

Why do you want to breed them?

Disenchanted3 · 18/02/2010 19:13

Bella,

One of my bitchs is (I feel) a very good example of her breed standard, I already have a champion sired stud in mind and hope to breed her to him and then keep on of her litter for showing

3 of the potential pups (apart from the one I keep) already have homes waiting within my family and friends so I know they will be placed in loving homes.

Also Breeding is something I have alway been interested in and we are super dedicated to our doggies so feel its something worth doing as our dogs are so good (visually and also tempramently)

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 18/02/2010 19:14

to make money bella

[cynic]

Disenchanted3 · 18/02/2010 19:15

Mid, her mother and mothers mother whelped without any medical intervention. I know this isn't a guarentee of sucsess naturally but it is an indication.

Obviously if help is needed it will b provided that goes without saing but there is a chance of that breeding any dog.

OP posts:
Disenchanted3 · 18/02/2010 19:17

Nom if you read my post 3 pups (if there are any at all!) have homes withinmy amily so I'm hardly making money from that am I?
