My instinct is to wait

Our cat only died on Tuesday, DH, DD & I are still mourning him.

But DD is terribly upset - beyond what I was expecting (& tbh I'm not doing too well)

Of course Kittens usually arrive later in the year - & pedigrees are very expensive and rare to find.

But I just don't know how to comfort her, she is disparate for another cat - she has enough other crap in her life, maybe I should hunt out a new kitten for her. She is as upset as she was when her Nana died.

I am at a loss

Do you have photos of kitty? When I lost my first cat I was devestated, but the few weeks grace we had helped me to heal a bit.And a photo of Ebony by my bed helped me a bit.

Have you had a look at a local cat shelter? they may have pregnant cats and could you register for a kitten?

KatyMac · 11/02/2010 21:46

We have always had siamese since the hair is better than fur for allergies

She has photos of Romeo

Lots of shelters won't let you have a cat if you have under 5's

hmmmm try the siamese cat club see if they have anything needing to be rehomed?

Rex coats are good for allergies too

differentID · 11/02/2010 21:51

That's a bit arsy. I mean I can understand why, but surely they should do a family interview type thingy than a blanket ban.

Your old fella was Romeo? Great name!

KatyMac · 11/02/2010 21:55

Yeah but I'd fail an interview - I live in a nursery (for all intents & purposes) - but if we got a kitten we would keep him away from the children until he was old enough to cope

Kittens claws don't retract properly so kittens & small children are a tricky combination - therefore it is worth keeping them apart

Are Rex the ones with hardly any fur (that get sunburnt)?

There do seem to be kittens around now - I have been googling (I faint at the price but I think my mum will help; my Birthday & next Christmas presents )

I would wait a little in all honesty. You all need time.

We lost a 10 month old cat in a traffic accident (see one of my posts for details) just before christmas

My dd (age 4) was really upset that night as she realised that Gizmo wasnt coming home. He used to sleep in her bedroom and they were best buddies

I then said to her that when cats die they go up to the moon and chase mice all around the stars, as thats where cats go when they die. But I am sure he is very happy playing with some of his friends and all the mice!

She still mentions him when she sees the moon, and says to me, look mummy, the moon! I am sure giz is having fun up there! Brings a tear to my eye.

I have his and two other cats ashes in sleeping cat caskets, which has helped her too in a funny way

KatyMac · 11/02/2010 22:02

That is my instinct but I have a 12 yo who is so upset - she really is - it's not for effect it is real (mind you mine is too )

Romeo was 15

rex have shortish curly coats like stroking velvet, you are thinking of sphinx???

KatyMac · 11/02/2010 22:08

I'll have a look friends had the hairless ones but they kept getting sunburnt

It's stupid to rush I know that

I must be sensible

just look at the rehoming page for siamese

www.siameserescue.org.uk/homeswanted.htm

After our moggy died we got a somali as dh loved the breed we ended up with only a couple of months wait as one came up in our area very quickly. It was an okay gap in the end but I think it was better not getting a kitten IYSWIM.

CarGirl · 11/02/2010 22:19

the one near woking sounds lush, attentione seeking, very affection gets on well with children and other animals. Wonder if my cats would let him move in with us????

KatyMac · 11/02/2010 22:23

I know - but she is already 10.....could I lose another so quickly?

Mind you she could have a lovely home for the rest of her life

Oh, oh, oh......

Are they seal point in the top link, bottom set of pics?

I'm not allowed a Siamese- too noisy. Mind, I;m happy with my Birman cross moggies

They are beautiful.

KatyMac · 11/02/2010 22:39

Yep

The top ones were similar in colour to my boy

I mustn't google

KatyMac · 11/02/2010 22:42

differentID · 11/02/2010 22:43

you still wait for that tail disappearing around a corner don't you?

KatyMac · 11/02/2010 22:46

The laptop feels odd on my knee - it's kinda flat and not tilted at one corner; there is nothing under my elbow as I type

When watching telly my feet aren't weighted down by a lump; when cooking he isn't trying to trip me up so I can drop some food for him.

OP posts:
differentID · 11/02/2010 22:51

My boy cat thinks I'm a pirate and he's the ruddy parrot- he drapes himself over my left shoulder as I type and drools over my left hand. never for very long as I do shift him

KatyMac · 11/02/2010 22:59

Actually am I considering this for her or for me?

I need to think a bit more

OP posts:
KatyMac · 11/02/2010 23:00

DH trained Romeo to jump on his shoulder when DH patted his leg

It took about 2 weeks to train him & then nearly 6 months to untrain him when I was pg & we worried that we would have the baby on out shoulder when he jumped

OP posts:
differentID · 11/02/2010 23:06

Mind, cats do whatever they want whenever they want

How about sitting her down at the weekend and just chatting about him and make the decision after the weekend?

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/02/2010 23:13

so sorry to hear about your loss ((HUG))

the blondes have hammies and when one dies we are heartbroken, but we do tend to buy a new one asap

seeing the empty cage breaks our hearts
