Not enjoying dog ownership when to call it a day ?

Long story short, did a bit of research into what dog to get as I cannot stand hair, so thought we were buying a labradoddle.
Turns out he's all Lab and no Doddle, there are fine blonde hairs everywhere, could be worse but I hate it.
Combined with the fact that the kids begged for him and now ignore him, he chases the cats around the house and jumps fences to shit in next doors garden all in all I've had enough.
Is this going to get better or do I rehome him whilst he still has the cute little dog factor ?

If he is a lab cross not a labradoodle/labradoodle then she had no way of knowing how his coat would trun out as he could take after either of his parents (like any other cross breed) she was wrong to imply or say she could.

Where abouts are you?

pagwatch · 03/11/2009 13:43

Are you certain she lied about it?
I only ask as you presumeably visited the puppy at least twice and didn't see the nature of his coat - perhaps she genuinely had no notion that he would develop this pattern of hair growth/sheding.

Would it not at least be worth talking to her?

And FWIW many of us have dogs who shed hair and we don't give a shit about it because we love our dogs or train them to only lie/sleep in certain places.

BCNSback · 03/11/2009 13:44

agree with others comments about animal exchanging via internet.

If you take him back to breeder or to a rescue place.. the later certainly will check out new homes/owners for him. Which is a good/ the best thing for him.

I could happily pass that information .. and see if this potential new home would be a good idea for him.

BellaBonJovi · 03/11/2009 13:45

Here's what I pay per (lab sized)dog, if it helps:

Food £25 per month
Worming: £2 per month
Flea treatment: £5 per month
Insurance: £20 per month

There are other costs not covered by insurance:

Boosters: £35 per year
Neutering: £150 - 250 depending on dog or bitch.

Insurance policies usually have an excess of around £60, plus many require you to pay a % of the rest of the bill.

Plus leads, collars, toys etc.

Please please do not take on an untrained dog on a whim. My friend did this and bitterly regretted it.

OP - it is your duty to rehome the dog responsibly. Call Dogs Trust/RSPCA if you don't want to go back to the breeder.

Merrylegs · 03/11/2009 13:46

I just don't understand this. You say he is 'all Lab and no Doodle' and then later you say he is a "lab crossed with a poodle."

So which is it?

And if you were after a Labradoodle and the breeder sold you a Lab then you need to go back to the breeder.

Also, all dogs shed (even my whippet sheds a little and he is super clean and sleek)- and Labradoodles are particularly stinky dogs, so buying a dog on the basis that it won't shed is really misguided and doesn't really show any research or thought.

You ask if it will get better.
TBH it sounds as if you are just not that into dogs, and since he is going to remain a dog for the rest of his life, the answer is, no it won't get any better- for you.

You need to rehome him.

MillyMollyMoo · 03/11/2009 13:48

Well if she didn't know she certainly told us he would get his curl coat at about 6 months.
I'm afraid I do give a shit about my kids black school uniform being covered in dog hairs and finding them in my kitchen it's revolting.
The house smells which combined with morning sickness is sending me over the edge.

poor dog

Fabster · 03/11/2009 13:50

You said she lied to you about what breed the dog is. So she either doesn't know what she is doing or she is just a fraud.

BCNSback · 03/11/2009 13:51

why not give a rescue place a call .. sounds like you and doggings would both be a lot happier.

MillyMollyMoo · 03/11/2009 13:53

Fabster it doesn't matter now does it in the grand scheme of things, moving forward he looks very very like a Lab and is intelligent so I've no doubt he was crossed with a poodle but not much poodle came out.
And we can all say poor dog, I agree, there isn't a social services for dogs so you can't report me for not liking him, much as i'm sure some of you would like to

Thanks Bella, was what i was thinking it would be, although hadnt thought about cost of spading, as wasnt planning on letting my dog bread, so would need to ensure that was done asap too

Are all dogs untrained first off anyways? I would never take on an older dog, as would always like to know full hisotry.

paisleyleaf · 03/11/2009 13:53
Sad
HeSaysSheSays · 03/11/2009 13:53

Milly, don't justify yourself.

You tried it out, it didn't work. Getting angry about other peoples thoughts is going to help no-one (and neither is flaming TBH). Rehoming has now become the responsible thing to do so do it the best way that you can (IMO not the RSPCA).

TBH I would be there saying how wrong you were too - if this was your second or third dog with the same result but, it seems, it is not. We all try things out and find it is not for us sometimes, it is a shame when it is a dog but at least the op is not sticking it in her outside shed and throwing food at it once a week like some people do when they find they do not like having a dog around. Yes poor dog is right but give her a break, at least she is trying to make things right for him.

BCNSback · 03/11/2009 13:54

can I just put my 2 peenies worthing.. for anyone wanting to get a dog for the first time.. or who haven't had one in a while... please please adopt one not shop for one.

You'll get support and if things don't work out for whatever reason.. the rescue place will help you your dog out.

LaurieScaryCake · 03/11/2009 13:55

You might feel better about him if you took him to the groomers for a wash every couple of weeks and a proper cut every 12 weeks.

I have a springer and I have him shorn very short (number 3 clipper) every three months - he still does shed lots though.

It costs me £28 for a wash and cut but just £15 for a wash so if you can afford it consider it.

I wash the dog myself and just have him cut but if your sensitive to smells cos your pregnant then it might be better getting someone to do it for you.

BellaBonJovi · 03/11/2009 13:57

Lisa - an untrained 6 month old lab cross is an entirely different proposition to an untrained 8 week old pup. At 6 months they are near enough adult size, weight and strength. With adult teeth too.

BCNSback · 03/11/2009 13:57

pennies worth in *

and this isn't advice for milly... just those who maybe considering a dog in the future.

pagwatch · 03/11/2009 13:58

can I just say.
I have absolutly no issue with your taking the decision that you cannot cope with a pet. I think it is the responsible thing to do actually.
I put poor dog in my post in the context of his being offered via the internet albeit to a very well meaning stranger. That strikes me as wrong in many ways I am not fully able to articulate.

BellaBonJovi · 03/11/2009 13:58

Very true, BCNS. Good rescues will match the right dog with the right owner.

And help prevent dogs being rehomed again

thesunshinesbrightly · 03/11/2009 13:59

And we can all say poor dog, I agree, there isn't a social services for dogs so you can't report me for not liking him, much as i'm sure some of you would like to

stop feeling sorry for yourslef, and do something about the sitution you did not think through proply, their is no point taking it out on us, we do feel sorry for the dog, this is why so many end up in kennels.

BCNSback · 03/11/2009 14:03

Pag.. if I was the well meaning.. i apologise for coming across like that..

Just happen to know of a couple ( who I run my spaniel with ) who have been looking to adopt a young lab/ retieve type.. and would be happy to point them in this dogs direction for their consideration.

sorry if that hasn't come across the way I actually mean lol.

MillyMollyMoo · 03/11/2009 14:04

Ok my concerns about taking him to dogs trust because they are the only ones that don't put them down right ? Is that a) they are bursting at the seams from what I remember, we looked there first before we went to the breeder, b) he would be a financial burden whilst they looked for a home for him, whilst i don't like him it's not killing me to have him here and c) what if his behaviour deteriates whilst he's there, he gets quite stressed around big dogs and has run home from the park when a big german shephard type dog approached him, I just can't bear to think of him being stressed in one of those places and then not rehomed because he's thought badly of.
Surely better people come to the house and see him here ?

OP posts:
MollieO · 03/11/2009 14:05

To OP you have posted several times about how much you do not like your dog in particular or dogs in general. I am surprised that you haven't rehomed him by now. Please contact Dogs Trust/RSPCA today and do it. The longer you leave it the harder it will be for whomever takes your dog on. It sounds as is he is completely unloved in your home and that is a very cruel situation to perpetuate.

moosemama · 03/11/2009 14:06

If you are set on rehoming, one of these organisations may be able to help:

Labradoodle Trust

Labradoodle Club Rescue

Labradoodle Association Forum

Labradoodle Trust Rescue

Alternatively:

Dialadogwash These guys come and wash and groom in a specially kitted van on your own drive. If they don't cover your area, there are lots of companies doing this now, just google 'Mobile Dog Wash'.

Association of Pet Dog Trainers You can search for a qualified dog trainer in your area on this site.

or

Kennel Club Approved Dog Training Clubs

BCNBback I didn't mean anyone in particular. I am just uncomfortable about the idea of handling it that way however genuine anyone responding would be.

Just a fluffy way of avoiding implying that any particular MNer is a puppy strangler
