where is the best place to buy a puppy?

i want to avoid the puppy farms but when i loko at local listings i just seem to find a lot of scam ad's selling puppies from north africa for 5% of their usual cost.

Is there some secret website i dopn't know of?

Or of course, try a rescue centre like Dog's Trust.

the problem i am finding with rescue centres is that they are reluctant to re home a dog with usa DD will be just 5.
plus most of the dogs they have are quite big. its a shame as they were our first stop.

I used this one to get both of mine. One came from a kennel club accredited breeder and the other did not. You have to be careful with this kind of website as there are some rip offs/puppy farms.
Most important things are to check that both parents have had the relevant health tests (the kc website lists which tests for which breed). Also see the mother and make sure they dont have several different breeds.

What kind of dog are you looking for?

If you know what breed you want, a lot of breeds have their own website which may have links to breeders with pups (or older dogs) available. We got our current dog via the dachshund breed site, we were looking for a pup but found a 10 month old who needed a pet home (he'd been kept for show/stud but wasn't making the grade) - this worked out really well for us.

i got my puppy at 8 months (let someone else do the toilet training !) she had come from a very loving home and there was a genuine reason for rehoming(owner starting full time work) previous owner still visits her and she cried buckets when i took her but is happy now she knows she has good home

You should always be able to visit a breeder to choose the pup so it should be pretty clear what the setup is then. You should be able to meet the mother dog and often some aunties so you can see how the pup is likely to turn out.

If you can't inspect like this, don't touch with a bargepole.

Ours were both from family homes overrun with happy dachshunds!
