I have two border terriers . I feed them on a dry complete dog food. I was just wondering if anyone had any reccomendions for a diet that would help them smell a bit sweeter. They are pongy ! Not windy at all , but just their body and breath.

I have come to the conclusion that dogs smell, end of! We have a lab and he smells although DH insists he can' smell a thing!

Sorry if I sound patrnising or insulting, but bad breath is often due to poor dental health,so have you had their teeth checked? Smell coming from the dog's body is also usually due to dead hair left in the coat. You could try bathing them and brushing thoroughly while you blow dry them - this gets a lot of dead hair out. Terriers also benfit from stripping with a special stripping comb.

do they have chews and things such as those denta-sticks? They make the world of difference

My mums 8yr old Golden Retriever has got the best teeth the vet has seen due to one-a-day dentasticks and real bone chews (from Wilkinsons)

Do you bath the dogs when they roll in stuff? You could buy a fur-minator and groom him with that once a week; it takes out all the dead hair from the undercoat as well as the top... and daily grooming with a normal brush

My mums dogs only stink when they've found the fox poo!

thanks everyone , the older of the two has got quite bad breath , will try the dentasticks. They are stripped 2 or 3 times a year , and bathed fairly regularly. I will try grooming them a bit more often and see if that helps.

I think doggy smell is often food related, what do you feed them on at the moment?

My dogs are fed on Burns (a complete dry food containing, in our case chicken, rice and peas, but there are other varieties available) because it is simple to digest and isn't crammed full of fake gravy, preservatives and colourings.

It is also not produced by any of the major pet food manufacturers (eg pedigree) who do some truly awful things to dogs and cats when testing out different types of food. It is because of their cruelty that I refuse to buy their products.

Have your dogs had their anal glands emptied? One use of the glands is to eliminate waste from their bodies and if they're full it points to both too much waste in their systems, and possible a contributor to their smell! The waste can come from food which is too processed for their systems to cope with.

My parents had an elderly, rescued golden retriever who stank! We changed her onto Burns and quite quickly she lost her scent ... it made life much, much more pleasant.
