Just had to have my hamster put to sleep. Cried in the shop. Feel a bit silly expecially as bigger things to worry about.

I was getting ready to clean him out and he came over to see me. Got his leg stuck in his "safe for hamsters" wooden toy and I shouted for DH to come. We got his leg out but DH said straight away it was broken. Rang the vet at the pet shop and had 15 minutes to get there.

His leg was broken and there was nothing he could do. I thought he was okay as he wasn't crying but apparently they go quiet when in pain and he would have tried to eat his leg off.

Only consolation is he was only in pain for a few minutes and the kids seem okay.

I cried all over the place.

Watch out for the wooden log toys.

Oh, I'm so sorry - how awful for you. Sending you all my sympathy x

sullysmum · 01/02/2009 17:57

Did you get the toy from the same shop as the vet you saw?

eNABlemetobebetter · 01/02/2009 18:11

Same company but not the same branch.

So sorry

TheThoughtPolice · 01/02/2009 18:53

what a shame. Poor old hammy

Lovemyshoes · 01/02/2009 18:55

Poor little thing. Sorry for you all. I don't think it makes a difference what size animal, us british make them part of the family and it hits us hard when they go.

My cat is on her last legs, sleeping alot, drinking and eating little and very very rarely goes out. She is not in any discomfort but we can tell she hasn't got long

hereidrawtheline · 01/02/2009 18:56

I am very sorry to hear that. He was obviously loved though which is a wonderful thing for him. xxx

hereidrawtheline · 01/02/2009 18:57

I meant to say I would make a complaint to the shop and manufacturer of the toy.

eNABlemetobebetter · 01/02/2009 19:02

I was tempted to email and say about the toy but didn't want them to think I was making a fuss.

I think it is why they didn't charge me for putting him to sleep as I had said I bought the toy as being safe for hamsters.

She said I wasn't to know he would get his leg stuck. But isn't the point that he shouldn't have been able to?

Sorry lovemyshoes. My cat is 15 this year and has an illness and I am absolutely dreading when she dies. I have had her since she was 5 weeks old and she has got me though some really tough times.

so sorry to hear of your loss, i would complain about the hamster toy

and yes hamsters do have a very high pain tolerance, so sure he didnt feel much xxx

eNABlemetobebetter · 02/02/2009 08:01

I have emailed them.

From getting his leg stuck to being put to sleep was about 20 minutes so hopefully he wasn't suffering long.

It sounds stupid with all the other stuff I have going on, but I miss him.

Nab, Ididn't see this last night. I'm sorry. Hope they do something about the toy.

eNABlemetobebetter · 02/02/2009 08:06

Poor you - NAB! It was not your fault, and I hope the manufacturer/shop are suitably apologetic.

I have never heard of these things causing problems although I can see how it could happen.

Blondie - you said MN frowns on them: have other hammies been injured too?

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/02/2009 15:16

no - meant MN frowns apum hugs!!

nab- he wasnt ONLY a hamster - he was a much loved pet - and part of the family

bella29 · 02/02/2009 15:19

Sorry for being thick, Blondie

I do amaze myself sometimes

eNABlemetobebetter · 02/02/2009 16:42

Thanks BHMF. It feels different without him here. And it is so cold and snowy out there.
