Are Pet kennels safe?

I have two dogs, Rio (1 year old) and Lio (2 years old), and I’ve never left them alone or away from me for more than a short time. They’re used to having me around, so I’m a little worried about leaving them somewhere unfamiliar.
I’m going to have surgery soon and will need about a week to recover. A friend suggested leaving them at a kennel while I recover, but I’m not sure how safe or reliable kennels are. I’ve never used one before, and I’m worried about how they’ll cope without me.
Has anyone used kennels for their dogs? How did your dogs get on, and what should I look for when choosing a good one? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences.

We chose a place that had a roof on the kennel and run area for our husky . She actually loved going as they had an enclosed huge garden she could be off lead..
Look for reputable reviews and word of mouth op

They will probably need kennel cough vaccine before they can attend. Worth checking but I’m sure that’s the case. You maybe able to find a home from home pet sitter, maybe more pleasant for the dogs

Mine goes to kennels and he absolutely loves it. He's a border collie who doesn't particularly enjoy being 'coddled' so it's perfect for him. He gets to run around all day in the fields and at night they are in heated and covered kennels.
When I first started looking I asked for recommendations on our community page and then arranged to view the kennels that everyone raved about. I really liked it and then he stayed for 1 night to see how he got on. He loved it and didn't want to come home!
A pet sitter wouldn't have worked for us, but every dog is different and that might suit your dogs better. Definitely ask for local recommendations and then arrange a viewing to get a feel for the place. If you can take your dogs even better, because I think it's obvious if they're comfortable or not and that will help your decision.

@Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely Thanks for sharing your experience! An enclosed garden where dogs can run around sounds great. I’ll definitely look for a reputable place with good reviews and recommendations before making a decision for Rio and Lio.

@exhausted100 Thanks for the advice! I hadn’t thought about the kennel cough vaccine, so I’ll check with my vet and ask about the requirements. A home-from-home pet sitter sounds like a good option too. I’ll look into both and see what would be best for Rio and Lio.

@Myremoteislost Thanks for sharing your experience! It’s reassuring to hear that your dog enjoys going to kennels so much. I like your idea of arranging a viewing and trying one night first. I’ll ask for local recommendations and see if I can visit a few places with Rio and Lio before deciding. I just want to make sure they’re comfortable and well looked after while I recover.

Not necessarily, my local kennels don't. My ddog puts up with kennels, they are very secure and sometimes necessary They are run by doggy people so dogs are cared for but obviously not the same as having their human on tap.

Go and visit some. Check out their feedback. See if you like the people, the environment, the routines, etc. I’ve used different boarding kennels for years and my current dog loves it as gets on walks with other dogs. In the past I had a reactive dog who appreciated that I chose kennels where he could’nt see any other dogs and had one to one lead walks dnd play. and was also fine. When I have a pup I make a point of introducing the pup for a short stay when still quite young. Yes depends on the dogs but I think most will accept a routine at least after a couple of days. That’s my experience anyway!
