What to feed my dog 🐶

We have an amazing nearly 5 year old chocolate lab. She is perfect in every way, and obviously we want her to have the best diet. Currently she’s on Edmondsons grain free as this is what the family she was born to used. Never had any complaint with the food, she loves it but just been reading about grain free possibly being linked to heart problems?

what dog food do you feed your dogs? Especially larger dogs as she’s around 40kg. Would rather stay on dry food.

thanks! 🐶

Look on “all about dog food” and compare quality. Dog food is a minefield, so many different brands, Every dog is different and a lot of the big brands have nutritionalists that can advise you.

@sparklystar333 AADF disproportionately rate food with very high protein as 'excellent' even if that food is highly suspect in other areas. Example below:

https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-reviews/2280/poppys-picnic-raw-power-mince

Absolutely atrocious fibre quantity. Should be between 2-5%, and theirs isn't even 1.7%! But AADF has rated it 97% because of the very high (insanely high) protein levels. They've done the same with Bella and Juke (which I use for one of my dogs) - rated it highly when it has barely enough carbs for the average dog. I have to top my dogs food up with extra carb heavy biscuits to ensure she hits her carb requirements.

AADF is a useful tool. But it's rating system needs to be taken with a huge pinch of salt.

I feed most of my dogs a mix of either raw (Bella & Juke or Farmer's Dog) or wet food (Butternut Box) + biscuits to ensure a balanced diet. Yet to find a food really suitable for a retriever - most are either far too high in protein or far too high in carbs.

AADF is a scam, look at the debacle with Years. I spent loads of money on the highest nutritionally rated boutique brands thinking I was doing the best for my dog, only to have a lucky escape as many other dogs went blind.

I’m now of the view that many dogs have lived long happy lives on the old school brands like Butchers, so my girl now has a mix of that and Barking Heads which she enjoys.

We spend more time and energy analysing what we feed our dogs than our kids…

My boy is on a food called Pure. You order it online, you give them your dog’s age, weight etc and they work out the amount. It’s a dry mix that you reconstitute with hot water. Bit of a faff but doesn’t take long and my boy absolutely loves it. He’s a lab but he’s incredibly fussy and we’ve been through no end of brands. He seems to like this one though.

Mine is thriving on Lily's kitchen wet but I appreciate it's quite spendy for a bigger dog. I get loads when they have 30% off. I also make sure she has the grain one chicken and turkey I think in her rotation.

the best dog food is what your dog will eat consistently and what you can afford.

comsiderkng my dog eats cat poo, her own sick, any random mouldy food she finds on walks (I had to wrestle from her a chicken bone some human had gnawed on 🤢) etc I'm not too concerned 😂
