Cat died suddenly of anti-freeze poisoning

We had to have our cat put down suddenly 10 days ago. He came home barely being able to walk, we took him to the vets and she said hed ingested anti-freeze. Hed had strokes, heart attacks and it had affected his brain. Absolutely devastated.
Hed gone out on the wednesday and not come home until Friday, not abnormal for him as he loves roaming. It was that heatwave period and i keep going over how i should have kept him inside with his water.
I still cant believe hes gone and i keep going over where this antifreeze is he had got hold off. Weve never kept any. I just feel gutted, in the whole time we had him he never had any issues and then this. He was inquisitive and loved being out catching mice etc.

Also, if the time comes that i ever wanted another cat, i cant as i cant risk this happening again. Where we live we have lovely fields ideal for cats. There are lots of cats round here. Never heard of cats getting poisoned from antifreeze and just feel crushed.

I have never lost a pet in this way but I know how devastating it can be. Give yourself time to grieve before you make any absolute decisions though - it is likely this was just a fluke and will never happen again.

How can the vet be sure that it was from anti-freeze? Could the poisoning possibly be from weed killer/insect killer/rat killer chemicals? That is much more likely considering how hot the weather has been.

I wouldn't be sure that it was intentional either. Probably was an accident.

I am so sorry for your loss, OP. I know how devastating this can be. I have recently lost my cat, got run over in front of my drive, under my eyes. Thinking of it it may have happened at the same time for us both, the 17th.😭

I keep reliving the moment and keep going over what I should have done different. I keep beating my self up over the fact that I did not lock him indoors when I went to the front of the house so he would not join me. Please know that my cats only went out when I was at home, never spend the night out, only on the rare occasion one refused to get back. I’d always look for them and I am sure my neighbours could hear me calling their names at the back of the gardens. I have multiple cameras around my house to help monitor the cats. Despite all these measures, my precious young boy is still dead.

I now have a new purpose in life, that is to move to a safer area like yours. And after reading your post I realise that accidents can happen anywhere. And that there is only so much we can do to prevent them.

I have two more cats and some may think I still have them and that I should be alright. But no, it might be better but not a lot better. My female cat developed pyometra while I was keeping her indoors still, and she could have died.

I wish I could make things easier for you, or time go faster as it is the time passing that eventually makes it easier to bare.

I wish I could write to you some wise words that could actually help.

I can though offer you a handhold and a virtual shoulder to cry on if you need one.

yeah i have heard of people pouring it over stuff that cats like to eat.Its just so spiteful ,i would be watching people for anything suspicious .If your in a local facebook group tell people my cats been poisoned by antifreeze you may want to keep them indoors.If theres lots of cats around that maybe why someone did something like this
