Rescue dog from Romania. Anyone else did this. Any tips.

We are thinking of getting a rescue dog from Romania.
We have tried in this country to be told our fences too low and bungalow is not suitable to adopt.
Fences are 6ft so can't be made higher. Whether the charities are very fussy or what.
We lost our last rescue in January. We think he was about 16 and he had no problems.
It's a rescue we want not a puppy.
We are both retired. Both in very good health. We even have a back up if taken Ill etc our ds is willing to step up.

Anyone else did this. Have you any tips.

Don't get a rescue dog from abroad. I've heard lots of bad reports, plus there are plenty of dogs looking for homes in this country.

Get a retired greyhound. Best pets ever.

It was a gamble and we are pleased with how it's gone so far.

How much did you pay to adopt him? Its worrying that he doesn't seem to have been on the streets long... he's probably someone's beloved pet!

What do you mean about your 19 year old being too tiny?

I think I flagged in my first post on this thread, but stealing people's dogs is really common in these 'rescues.'

I know someone who found her much loved dog in one...after he 'vanished' from her garden. He was chipped and everything.

@OriginalSkangour daughter is only 4ft 10 and a size 6.
She holds the lead when walking with us. But we don't feel comfortable with her taking Ted on her own yet.

According to the records he had been in the shelter since the end of April which was when he was advertised.
We saw this advert towards the middle of July.

Why would your bungalow be suitable for a Romania dog if not suitable for a UK dog?

@Worryabouteverything - we have a rescue dog who we adopted from Cyprus, via Rehome Cyprus Pointers. They sent a volunteer out to home check us, and to talk us through the various issues we might face with a rescue dog. They wanted 6 foot fences.

We have found it a completely positive experience - our dog settled in well, is happy with our other dog and with the dogs dh meets when walking them, and hasn’t had any health issues - we had to have her regularly tested for certain diseases, but those tests have always been negative. She hasn’t had any behavioural issues, though she is a bit shy with people until she gets to know them.

Dh dog walks with at least one person who adopted a dog from Romania, and I can’t imagine ask him if they have any advice, if you want me to.

At the moment there is only one that is having behavioural issues with the dogs that came to the UK at the same time as Ted.

I have two British rescues and one Romanian. He arrived in good condition, with all the relevant paperwork. He’s honestly an ace dog, but he’s like Velcro with me. I don’t mind that- I love him to bits.

We will likely go back to our usual rescue for our next dog. Sadly, a lot of foreign dogs end up in British rescues, so be very sure you are prepared to be in it for the long haul.
