Neighbour commented on my cat not wearing a collar after loss

Two weeks ago, my cat went missing and I found out a few days later that he had been run over , taken to the vet but it was too late. Have been upset obviously. Was speaking to neighbour about something else and my other cat walked up. Neighbour ( twice!!) bent down to strike it and murmured something along the lines of hi Fred, haven't you got a collar on yet?
Didn't respond as was a bit distracted in the moment Don't want to fall out with them and don't have to justify why cat doesn't have collar. Wwyd.

Why would you need to do anything? This probably won’t be a recurring issue.
But if he does ask, just tell him why? I assume you have a reason.

DameOfThrones · 18/03/2026 22:22

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘what would you do?’

I’d either tell them why or just ignore.

Just tell them why.....

A collar won't stop a cat getting run over.
A vet should check for a chip when an animal is brought in like this.
Chip your cat of course, but they don't have to wear a collar.

I would respond that wearing collar doesn't give a cat road sense or save him or her from an accident.

I'm assuming your boy wasn't chipped. Vets usually scan for chips to enable them to contact the owner, but you'd be amazed how many people forget to update their pet's details when they move house or rehome them for whatever reason.

why did your neighbour strike the cat? sounds awful. Grin

Mamalicious16 · 18/03/2026 22:53

Cat was chipped. Lol autocorrect from stroke to strike😁

Cat was adopted -can only assume rescue centre either forgot or gave wrong details. What's done is done now anyway.
