Cat boarding: Should a nine-night stay be charged as ten days?

Hello just a query hoping any pet boarders might clarify something for me. We are going away and leaving our cat with a pet hotel. We are leaving on the morning of the first day and returning 8am on the morning of the tenth day so nine full days and nights. We have just been sent an email with the bill for ten days? My husband thinks it should be nine and im not sure. How do other pet boarders charge. .

Yes, as they can’t rent out that room when your cat is still in it. It’s very normal for catteries to charge per day rather than per night.

FiveShelties · 18/03/2026 09:29

I have always been charged for each day, or part day. So 10 days would be correct.

mondaytosunday · 18/03/2026 09:31

I think it’s irrelevant (to the cattery) when you are collecting your cat, that day is taken by your cat. There’s probably something in the T&Cs about it.

Laiste · 18/03/2026 09:32

Oh ours charges per night.

Pick up and drop off tunes are quite strict tho. Like a human hotel - so they can do turnaround

But my cats not in it. We are picking him up at 8am but being charged for the whole of that day.

I assume you're not actually picking up your cat at 8am on the tenth day, so yes it is fair enough they are charging you for it.

Chatsbots · 18/03/2026 09:45

It's up to them and their charging policies.

You can query it but it will be in their T & Cs.

You can take your business elsewhere. I feel your pain, an extra day for my chooks really annoyed me...

Lor6126 · 18/03/2026 09:45

Yes probably is in the terms somewhere. I just wondered today as I was looking out the bill to pay the balance. It's a bit cheeky as it leaves the day free for another booking.

I am actually picking her up at 8am as agreed with them.

This. It would be the same at my cattery. You will be charged for all full days and any part days.

VillageMilton · 18/03/2026 09:49

That's all well and good until you're late to pick him up. Which happens.

Laiste · 18/03/2026 09:49

I'd be going elsewhere. If you're picking up at 8 of course they can use the pen later the same day.

Would everyone be happy to pay for a hotel for a night where they've left at 8 that morning?

pouletvous · 18/03/2026 09:50

catteries round my way are hard to find and they’re booked up 12 months in advance

id just be happy to pay the extra £25 for peace of mind

Iheartmysmart · 18/03/2026 09:50

I’ve always been charged a full day for arrival/departure days no matter how long my cats were there.

Good luck finding somewhere 😅

Zov · 18/03/2026 09:51

Yes of course it should.

Thesnailonthewhale · 18/03/2026 09:52

Its probably easier to just charge the day and block it out... plus you might get delayed or something and not able to pick up until 11 or after lunch .. and then what if they promised the space to someone at 10am or something.

plus people will take the piss if they say something like " free if collected before 9am" - people will turn up at 9:30 or even later or whatever and not want to pay.

you're perfectly welcome to use the hotel room until their check out time which is usually 10 or 11. Its your choice to leave earlier than that.

The cost is including that extra bit of the last day.

But they can’t put another cat in there straight away they have to clean and disinfect the whole pen. Most catteries don’t reuse a pen that a cat has been in that day.
