If you have both dogs and cats , do they love each other, hate each other?

We used to have a dog, cross Labrador/Alsatian . She was very cuddly, loved everyone.

When we got a cat, Tiiger, also cuddly and friendly, our dog Pandy was a little unnerved but they got used to each other , used to sleep cuddled up together on a rug next to the radiator .

However , Tiger ruled the roost. Pandy had always had her own separate bed, which Tiger never used to go near unless Pandy was in it, in which case she used to stand by the bed and stare at Pandy until she got out , then Tiger would get in ! If she could do expressions , I'm sure she would be smirking 😄

Do you have any funny tales about yours?

The dog is jealous of the cats. The cats don’t mind the dog but largely ignore her. There are no fights or anything though.

One of our cats thinks she is a chihuahua. When dog treats are being dished out, she will line up with the chihuahua waiting for her treat. She eats dog food from their bowl (but attempts to murder them if they eat cat food from her bowl). She play wrestles with them and joins their games of fetch.

All but one of them are a bit scared of her. She regularly pins the long-haired demonic chi to the floor and forcibly grooms him, and he daren't move until she is done.

Ours tolerate each other. However, the cat, age 21, is still undoubtedly the boss!

Not now but we had a dog and a cat growing up. They had a love hate relationship! However when the dog died the cat was bereft. She used to lie where the dogs bed and bowl were and miaow. She stopped eating and died only a few weeks later. It was heartbreaking

I have 2 cats and a dog. My 7 year old cat and my 5 year old border terrier get on really well, they will happily sleep next to each other, rub faces etc etc although the cat doesnt like having his bum sniffed by her. But he is a lovely cat, an absolute joy and just lovely.

However, my other cat, 11 years old, hates the dog with a passion and as a result my dog is very wary of her (I love the cat but she is a bit of a misery) If one wants to come in the door and one wants to go out the door, I have to micro manage them, and my dog has been known to reverse up the hall to avoid going past her if she is sitting in the doorway. But generally, all my animals rub along ok together, with just the ocassionl blip.

I have two cats and a dog. Had the cats 10yrs and the dog 8 yrs.

One of the cats gets on ok with the dog although he wouldn’t dream of sharing their space with him.

The girl cat loathes the dog with a passion. She hisses at him occasionally and if she stands in the doorway, the dog is too frightened to try to go past her to come in or out.

Girl Cat is my favourite pet and she knows it. 🥰
She’s normal cat size and the dog is a massive mixed breed Newfoundland/Labrador/Collie type. 🤣🤣

One of our dogs is friends/tolerated by the cat. Our other dog LOVES the cat and is desperate to smooch with her but the cat is totally turned off by her desperation and excitement when she claps eyes on him and won't let her near him. It's a sad sad situation 🤣. Here's a picture of favoured dog with puss cat

I have both dogs and cats, and at first they were unsure about each other. After a few days, they slowly became friends. Now they sometimes sleep near each other, but the cat definitely acts like the boss of the house! It’s funny to watch how the dog gives up his spot without any argument.

That is an amazing age for a cat

This a great topic!

My dog and cat constantly amuse me. Dog is 7, cat is 15. Dog is small but still a lot bigger and stronger than very skinny, old cat. Cat is very unfriendly with dog and dog is mostly scared of her. Dog will go down the other staircase if cat is sitting on the stairs - she doesn't even try to push past. Cat will push dog off her dog food and eat it unless I supervise them. The friendliest they get is that they seem to want each other's food and sometimes do a swap: dog is always eating cat's leftover biscuits and if dog doesn't like a particular food and leaves it, cat will eat it. Sometimes dog gets brave in the garden and wants to play with cat, for which she is rewarded with a hiss or a swipe. Cat is most definitely in charge. Both are girls.

It is - apart from being quite deaf, she is still in very good health too🙏🏻

purpleme12 · 25/02/2026 22:14

She sounds amazing

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 25/02/2026 22:20

Cat quite likes the dog, dog really hates the cat 🫤

They tolerate each other.

MrsBenevolent · 25/02/2026 22:23

I have a 45kg dog who is terrified of our kitten. Largely because she chases him and hisses.

WarrenTofficier · 25/02/2026 22:26

Growing up we had a dog when he was about 5 we got a kitten, which immediately became the dog's 'baby'. A second kitten a few years later was also the dog's 'baby'. The dog loved them both and they both loved him. They both failed to acknowledge that there was another cat in the house and totally ignored each other.

In the very twilight of the dogs life an adult cat adopted us and also held a firm belief that it was the only cat in the house. All three of them could pass on the stairs without so much as glancing at the others.

Adult cat had been coming and going as she pleased for several weeks before she literally walked into the dog and shocked and scared she did scary cat noises, puffy fur at him. The other two after 10 years of failing to acknowledge each other and probably a month of ignoring her formed an instant partnership and leapt to the dogs defence. The beautiful loving dog gave invader cat a big lick and she too was his 'baby' and all three cats went back to believing they were the only cat in the house but they all adored the dog and he loved them. He was the best dog ever.

We have a dog and two cats. The older cat absolutely detests the dog and will hiss and swipe at him whenever he gets too close. It is actually quite stressful and requires careful management! The younger cat can take or leave him, she will play with him when the mood suits. The dog (a massive dopey German Shepherd) is most definitely bottom of the pecking order, the cats well and truly rule the roost.

I have always been more of a dog person but I do love the blatant arrogance cats have 😂

Love the pic @annonymousse .

We had another dog and cat before the ones mentioned earlier [and a few others inbetween].

The dog was quite small, a bit like a whippet but we were never quite sure . She was fast asleep one day and farted , it was like a very loud squeak . She shot up, looking petrified and chased herself round and round trying to find out where it had come from ! The cat ignored her of course !
