How to stop the house smelling of cat food

I have recently got a kitten, we have got scented litter etc to prevent smelling and luckily it's going well, air fresheners etc are masking the smells, the only issue is the food, it stinks and makes the whole house smell of cat food, how do people hide that smell?

Feeding dry food is the only way. Some people say it's not good for cats, but mine would only eat dry food. You have to provide lots of water too.

Changing brands can help

Feed wet food at a certain time and then leave only dry biscuits out in a bowl. You also can get an automatic feeder that keeps biscuits contained until they push on it if you find the dry biscuits smelly.

i think you may be over sensitive, we have five cats and don’t need scented litter and air fresheners, they really are not good for your cat.
we only smell cat food after it’s been out for a few hours, feed wet food at certain times and remove any leftovers. You can leave dry food out.

Onehotday · 15/08/2024 06:07

Can't you feed the cat outside?

Mumdiva99 · 15/08/2024 06:07

I've never smelt cat food either. What are you using? We do dried and Felix as good as it looks.

Kitten poos can stink - so scoop them right away. But the litter shouldn't continue to smell. Have a breeze to air it out like you would if a human had made a smell.

We have a SureFlap SureFeed sealed bowl. An expensive solution but it works for us.

A sensor strip at the front detects the cat’s head near the bowl and the cover opens up. It stays up while the cat is eating and then folds down automatically when the cat leaves.

Also helps if you only give the amount of wet food the cat (or kitten) will eat in one sitting. Mine gets half a pouch of wet food in the morning, then dry food in the evening.

Dry food
If that doesn’t solve it dry food at mealtimes then lift it up
Wet food will stink like mad especially if it’s warm

Greenbriar · 15/08/2024 06:13

Re: litter, agree that scented litter and air fresheners only mask the smell (and add to indoor pollution). We use World's Best Cat Litter, which has no scent but absorbs the smell effectively without resorting to air fresheners.

I may have figured the issue, we feed him in the morning and it takes all day for him to eat all/most, we feed him again at night and by morning he's just finished l. Do cats a usually eat all in one go?

Many cats are 'little and often' eaters. But I'm surprised a boy kitten is taking a day to eat a couple of pouches of food - I've fostered for years so have experienced dozens of cats and these are the feline version of MN teen boy bottomless pits - in my experience, they eat their own food and the leftovers of any other cats in the house, plus anything else they can get access to, human food, rodents and birds etc, the lot. Is he having dry food as well?

But in any case, if he's a healthy weight and happy, then not to worry. Just try and feed him what he'll eat in one go and the rest later, and leave dry food out in between so he can graze, especially if you're not at home.

Although I've never found most cat food to smell of much, apart from some high quality meat versions like Carny, but that's actually quite pleasant. But if this is what you are feeding him, it's very filling, which could explain why he doesn't eat much at a time.

Mumdiva99 · 15/08/2024 22:37

My cats graze. They don't eat all their food in one go. We feed about 8am and again about 5:30pm. It's unusual that they would finish both wet and dried before we feed again.

All cats no matter of age should have wet cat food too or your cat could end up with a blocked tract, unable to pee or poop. Find a better kitten food and never leave it down on the floor. Pick it up throw it away an wash the cat food dish out. Open a new can at lunch or when it gets older dinner. Give treats and dry cat food too. Helps with teeth cleaning but try not to give dry cat food hardas a rock. Never use scented cat litter It makes the smell worse. I use unscented 99 % dust free. My home does not smell and I have 2 one year old cats. If the cat or kitten food you buy smells so bad try a different flavor or brand. Research the best. Leaving were cat food in a bowl makes it spoil. No matter what folks say you can feed table food research what kinds as long as no added salt or spices.

Don’t do this! Even if your cat is ready to go out, they need to feel safe and for nothing else to be able to get at their food. What a weird, mean suggestion.

Mine doesn’t - he picks at it for hours. We use Felix As Good as it Looks and it doesn’t smell.

Depending on age 2 dinners a day plus dry cat food and treats. Don't leave the food you gave for breakfast there to eat all day because it spoils very fast.

Blue278 · 25/01/2025 08:39

Yes. Feed twice a day once he’s bigger. Take away what he doesn’t eat straight away.
Sad to see all the suggestions for dry food only. Wet is much better for male cats.

You could do wet only twice a day while he’s small and needs to eat regularly and just leave the dry out for grazing.

My cat eats ‘Meowing heads’ and it STINKS but he loves it and it’s good quality. Make sure the food is complete and grain free. Cheap food makes stinky poos.

Marylou2 · 25/01/2025 08:40

My cat is 19, so really old.We switched to Untamed wet and dry food. It doesn't smell at all and is the very best quality. Doesn't smell at all .

Caspianberg · 25/01/2025 08:43

I use mixture of wet and dried.

Dried is in auto food dispenser. It’s just spits out enough three times a day. So it’s mainly eaten and then fresh again a few hours later. Ours you can opt for up to 12 feeds a day so for kittens you can dish out tiny portions fresh, regularly.

I only give fresh once a day now in evening. And just the amount he eats it within an hour. Otherwise it goes dry and flies in summer. When kitten I fed wet twice but again, just the amount they can eat within an hour then bowl cleaned up. Eat dry in between

We use purizon dried cat food which is a very moist variety so no issues. And then wet food is a fillet in broth type which smells far less.

Also, I feed cat in downstairs bathroom, so it’s not in the main living area. The bathroom only has bath and sink in so we add baby door stopper to door top
so nobody can close door fully ( take off for bath), so cat always has access. I would use a hall area or under stairs maybe if we had that area

Pigeonqueen · 25/01/2025 08:47

I feed half a sachet of wet food morning mixed in with dry food and the same again in the evening. He usually eats all of this and then I wash the bowl and replace with some dry food for him to pick at throughout the day. None of the wet food is left sitting about. I think this may be your issue.

Be careful overdoing it with the scented stuff with the litter tray, if you make it too scented they’ll stop using the tray. Cats don’t like fragranced stuff much.
