Kitten vs. Sofa: Seeking Wisdom to Save My Furniture

Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased a brand-new sofa, and it's already facing a relentless onslaught from my kitten's claws. Despite providing scratch posts and toys, my little furball seems to prefer the texture of the sofa for scratching. I understand it's a natural behavior for kittens, but I'd love to preserve the condition of my new furniture.

I'm reaching out to this community for tried-and-tested solutions to deter my kitten from treating the sofa as a scratch post.

Are there specific covers, deterrents, or training methods that have worked well for you?

I'm looking for solutions that are safe and humane for my kitten but effective in keeping the sofa unscathed.

Any advice, tips, or product recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I'm eager to hear your success stories and any strategies that could help protect my sofa while ensuring my kitten is happy and engaged.

Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions.

I get the anti scratch tape from Amazon - it's a clear double sided (quite wide) tape that I pop on over the edges where my cat likes to scratch. Its clear and fairly matte so doesn't really stand out too much, but it is very stick so my cats hate to touch it 😂

Cats and new, precious furniture are incompatible. Did you not realise this?

Sorry but yeah, this. If you have a kitten it’s not really the time for new sofas!
